โJonathan!โ Teresa exclaimed, unable to contain herself. โTurn it off! This is so embarrassing!โ
However, Jonathan was quicker. He stopped the recording before she could grab his phone and slipped it into his pocket.
โIโve got the evidence saved. Planning to back out now?โ he asked.
Teresa remained silent, but her expression told Jonathan she was about to deny everything.
โDo the things you say in bed even count?โ he asked.
โWhy should I have to keep my promises when you never do?โ Teresa grumbled.
Jonathan heard her, despite her low voice. His hearing was far superior to Teresaโs. โWhen have I ever not kept my word?โ he retorted.
Teresa thought, If you kept your promise, how did I end up pregnant? If it werenโt for the baby, I wouldnโt have been stuck at the bar last night, watching others drink. I would have just bought some wine and enjoyed it at home.
โIโm sorry, I shouldnโt have gone to the bar yesterday. My bad,โ she admitted.
Perhaps pregnancy had affected her memory. Sheโd even forgotten the most basic rule: never accept a drink from a stranger.
She could still recall fragments from last night. She had clung to him, pestering him, barely letting go. Sure, he had taken the lead later, but she hadnโt intended to sleep with him again. Yet, here they were.
Suddenly, Jonathanโs phone rang. He shot Teresa a look and answered, โYes, this is Jonathanโฆ Okay, Iโll be right there.โ
After hanging up, he pulled on his jacket and told Teresa, โIโm heading to the police station. Iโve got a lawyer. Duncanโs going to rot in jail for what he did.โ
Teresa blinked in surprise. โDuncan? Whoโs that?โ
โThe guy who slapped you and almost tried to take you away,โ Jonathan replied.
No wonder her face still hurt. In a daze, Teresa remembered that fat, greasy, disgusting man hitting her. So it really had happened.
Teresa bristled. โIโm coming with you. If he dares lay a hand on me again, Iโm not just going to sit back and take it.โ
Jonathan said, โI can handle it. You should just stay home and rest.โ
But Teresa said firmly, โIโm going with you.โ
When Jonathan headed to the garage, she followed right behind. He finally relented, saying, โYou barely got any sleep last night. I wanted you to rest, but if you insist, get in the car.โ
Hearing that, Teresa got into the car.
When they arrived at the police station, Duncan, the man from yesterday, outright denied drugging Teresa or attempting to kidnap her.
โYouโre accusing me of kidnapping, but I didnโt even succeed. You canโt charge me for something that didnโt happen, right?โ Duncan asked.
Teresa asked Duncan, โAttempted kidnapping is still a crime. Are you saying intent doesnโt matter just because you failed?โ
โAnd you slapped me last night. Shouldnโt I get to hit you back?โ Duncan added.
Duncan gritted his teeth and looked at a police officer. โLet her slap me, and weโll call it even. Then Iโm off the hook, right?โ
The officer replied, โThat depends on whether the other party wants to drop the charges. Mr. Lynn is the one pressing charges.โ
Hearing that, Duncan quickly turned to Jonathan. โI let your wife slap me, weโre good, right? Youโll drop it? Come on, man, it was just a misunderstanding.โ
โA misunderstanding? Youโve got to be kidding me,โ Teresa began to retort.
However, Jonathan gently pulled Teresa back and said to her, โGo ahead. Hit him back.โ
With a loud crack, Teresa slapped Duncan with all her strength, holding nothing back. Even the officers nearby were stunned. No one had expected her to hit him so hard.
Teresa shook out her stinging hand, feeling a rush of satisfaction. Jonathan took her hand, checked her palm, and said with a helpless smile, โSilly.โ
Duncanโs face turned a mix of red and purple. โThere, she hit me. Weโre even now. I didnโt try to kidnap her. She told me sheโs divorced with two kids. Why would I want a woman like that?โ
Jonathan glanced at Teresa with a flicker of surprise in his eyes. โDivorced with two kids?โ
