Chapter 44
Kelly suddenly recalled the phone call Leon had made outside the station. So, the backup he had called was the chief of police. The whole situation felt unreal and kept surprising Kelly in ways she hadn't expected.
Richard had a formidable demeanor. His stern gaze swept across the police officer standing nearby. “What’s going on here?” The police officer hadn’t expected Richard to arrive because of a university professor. He nearly bit his tongue in disbelief. He’d thought Leon had been arrogant due to his ignorance. It turned out that Leon had such a strong person backing him up.
“Chief Caldwell, please let me explain. This professor got into a fight with someone. We were just trying to mediate the situation,” he replied respectfully. There was no trace of the impatience he’d shown the caller.
Darin and Caleb clearly hadn’t expected Leon to have such a powerful connection. They stood there, feeling stunned and speechless.
“What do you plan to do?” Richard gazed at Leon gently. The way he spoke made it seem as if Leon was the victim in this situation.
“I admit that I’ve hit him. I’m willing to compensate him,” Leon replied calmly and took out his wallet. He slid out a couple of bills and tossed them in front of Gavin.
“That’s 250 dollars. Just take this as your medical fees.”
Gavin’s face flushed with anger. “Are you insulting me?”
“No. That’s just how much you’re worth,” Leon replied calmly, but his words hit Gavin’s sore spot.
Kelly almost burst into laughter. Gavin couldn’t retort and turned to the police officer. “Ortices, look at him. He’s so arrogant!”
The police officer immediately snapped at him. “Shut up! You know exactly what you did.”
Gavin fell silent.
Kelly was momentarily taken aback. It dawned on her that the police officer knew she hadn’t lied. However, with no evidence to support her claims, he could only mediate the situation and made her accept the unjust outcome.
Then, Leon spoke up again, his tone casual but sharp. “If you don’t want to accept the compensation, that’s fine. Just throw me in jail for a few days. I’m in a pitable state, anyway.”
In fact, nobody dared to put him in jail, especially not with his connections.
In the end, Richard gave the police officer a long, meaningful glance. “I’ll leave it to you to handle.”
By the time they left the police station, it was close to midnight. Kelly walked beside Leon, with Richard on the other side.
“Is Mrs. Butler Senior doing well lately?” Richard asked.
Leon replied gently, “She’s doing great. She’s off traveling abroad with my parents.”
“Ah, Mrs. Butler Senior really knows how to enjoy life these days. Please send her my regards,” Richard said.
“I will. Thank you for helping tonight, Mr. Caldwell,” Leon replied.
“We’re all so close. There’s no need to be so formal. Mrs. Butler Senior always spoke so highly of you. She mentioned you were thoughtful and had a good temper. I’ve never expected you to hit someone,” Richard teased as he cast his gaze on Kelly at his side.
Kelly immediately felt awkward.
“I was caught up in the heat,” Leon sounded guilty. Then, he gently took Kelly’s hand and introduced, “Mr. Caldwell, this is my wife, Kelly Valencia. Kelly, this is Mr. Richard Caldwell.”
Kelly was a bit nervous. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Caldwell.”
