Chapter 45

“Nice to meet you too, Kelly. I never heard about your wedding. Where was my invitation?” Richard said with a friendly smile.

“We’ve just gotten married recently. We haven’t held a wedding yet. When we do, we’ll definitely send you a personal invitation,” Leen replied.

Richard let out a hearty laugh. “Great! I’ll be waiting. Thet Mas Butler Sender will be over the moon. The last time I saw her, she was going on and on about wanting to hold a great-grandchild. You two shall not waste any more time!”

Kelly blushed with embarrassment, unsure how to respond, especially since the great-grandchild was already on the way. Leen didn’t explain much either and simply replied, “Of course, Mr. Caldwell.”

After seeing Richard off, Kelly stood by the roadside. Everything that had happened felt surreal; it was like a wild rollercoaster ride. The situation had turned around when Richard arrived. No matter how unwilling Gavin and Catch were, they knew they stood no chance. Moreover, considering the extraordinary relationship between Leon and Richard, Gavin knew things wouldn’t end well for him if he insisted on pursuing the matter.

In the end, the whole ordeal had been settled with Leon paying 250 dollars as compensation. Although Gavin didn’t want it, Leon was firm. It was the first time Kelly had seen someone insult another person with such composure.

“Ready to go home?” Leon asked.

Kelly turned to look at him. He stood against the light, and the shadows made his features appear more defined than ever. His gaze was gentle. Seeing her stare at him without speaking, Leon tilted his head slightly. “What is it?”

Kelly answered honestly, “I didn’t expect you to actually hit someone.”

“Are you scared?” he asked.

She shook her head. “No… It just didn’t feel like the usual you.”

Leon chuckled. “I don’t usually believe in solving problems with violence. But sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures.”

Kelly was speechless and battled joy filled Leon’s eyes when he saw her dazed look. “Did you feel better when you saw him getting punched?”

Kelly nodded honestly. “Yeah, but I was more worried about you.”

Her honesty caught Leon off guard for a second. He reached out and gently ruffled her hair. He seemed to enjoy doing this; her hair was soft and warm to the touch, and it felt oddly comforting.

“Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.” He was fully aware of the consequences of his actions. Besides, he was prepared to take full responsibility.

Kelly nodded obediently before asking, “Mr. Caldwell…”

Leon seemed to know exactly what she was going to ask. “Grandma used to be the chief prosecutor. She once recommended Mr. Caldwell in front of the former police chief. He’s never forgotten it.”

Kelly was dumbfounded. The chief prosecutor was someone she would never have had a chance to cross paths with. She wondered what kind of man she had…

Leon chuckled at the sight of her disbelief. “Close your mouth, or you’ll start drooling.”

Realizing he was teasing her on purpose, Kelly quickly shut her mouth. However, she couldn’t help but worry. “Did we cause him trouble?”

“Don’t overthink it. It’s normal for people to ask each other for help. These are the ways of the world,” Leon replied, giving her a light tap on the head.

His voice was slightly hoarse as he lowered it, and he sounded like he was whispering. “This is a war between me…” It was a situation where connections, background, and power mattered.

Kelly’s heart paced as she met Leon’s deep-set eyes. The night was enchanting, and Leon was exceptionally charming.
