Chapter 113: Running After Her
Mindy shook her head and waved her hands, seemingly overwhelmed by her raging emotions. She didnโt even have the courage to meet Rayleeโs gaze.
โNone of your business? Then whose business is it?โ Raylee squatted down, locking eyes with her, the piercing gaze striking Mindyโs soul. Mindy simply didnโt dare to look. Her eyes were flickering, her expression uneasy. She looked as if fleeing was the only thing on her mind.
Raylee knew that Mindy was all bark and no bite. In reality, her mental resilience was lacking. Her tough appearance was nothing but a facade, and she paled in comparison to Waverly when it came to being cunning. No wonder she is completely under Waverlyโs control, even being used as a pawn.
Seeing Mindy in a state of emotional turmoil, Waverly nervously stepped in front of her, sobbing as she said, โRaylee, Mindy has been beaten until sheโs barely conscious. I beg you, please spare her. I promise she wonโt do anything to harm you ever again.โ
However, Raylee was relentless. โI can let this matter go, but Iโm satisfied with so few lashes, soโฆโ She looked at the two of them with a serious expression. โI demand compensation from her, though I havenโt quite figured out what form it should take yet. Once Iโve figured it out, Iโll contact her. If thereโs any situation where I might need her in the future, Iโll get in touch with her. Do you guys have any objections to these two conditions?โ
After a few seconds of hesitation, Waverly nodded in agreement. โRaylee, I have no objections, and Mindy doesnโt either.โ
โAlright now, this matter has been resolved satisfactorily. RayโRay, letโs not bring up what happened four years ago anymore. We, as a family, should focus on living our lives well now,โ Harriet said with relief.
Raylee didnโt pay her any mind. After examining Mindy and Waverly with a scrutinizing gaze, she left the room. She was determined to unearth the secrets of Waverly from Mindy. There was no way she would easily forget what they did to her four years ago. I have plenty of time, so Iโll play by ear.
When she was leaving the Goodridge residence, Casimir followed her out, affectionately calling out to stop her. โRayโRay, wait for me,โ he said.
Raylee frowned. โMr. Sutherland, donโt forget that youโre in the Goodridge residence. Itโs one thing for you to run after me, but the way you addressed me just nowโฆ Donโt you have any sense of propriety at all?โ
โWhat I do or how I address you is not for others to dictate,โ Casimir said, his tone serious. He then asked, โWhy did you suddenly let Mindy off the hook? You were so adamant about calling the police initially, but then you suddenly changed your mind. Were you truly moved by their friendship? It doesnโt seem like you at all.โ
Raylee didnโt plan on discussing the matter with him, so she responded nonchalantly, โThe little princess of the Goodridge family threatened me with her own life, and if I continue to mess with Mindy, wouldnโt that put me at odds with the Goodridge family? Even if I had her thrown in jail today, they would still find a way to protect Mindy for the sake of Waverly tomorrow. How could I possibly contend with the power of the Goodridge family on my own?โ
โWhat else can it be? Do my words not make sense?โ The expression on Rayleeโs face stiffened for a moment.
โActually, Iโm quite envious of Mindy. She has a best friend who would risk her life to protect her, unlike me. When I was imprisoned, I became an orphan that no one cared about. I had to shoulder all the abuse and hardship on my own.โ
Casimir stared intently at her. After a moment, he let out a long sigh, saying, โIโm sorry. During those four years, I was completely focused on expanding the Sutherland familyโs overseas business that I neglected you.โ
With a nonchalant expression, Raylee shook her head. โIโll head back first.โ
โRayโRay, are you really still planning to marry Jeremiah?โ
As Raylee was about to turn away, Casimir abruptly grabbed her arm. With a serious look on his handsome face, he stared intently at her. โI hope you would think it through, then give me your answer.โ
Without a momentโs hesitation, Raylee gave her answer. โMr. Sutherland, I will marry Jeremiah. No matter how many times you ask, be it a thousand or ten thousand times, my answer will remain the same.โ
โKnowing full well who he is, you insist on walking down this dangerous path. Why do you have such little regard for your own life?โ Casimir chided, a mix of frustration and anger in his voice.
A mocking smile tugged at the corner of Rayleeโs lips. โDo you think they will spare my life just because I value it?โ
Casimir asked with a puzzled expression, โWhat do you mean? Whoโs trying to kill you?โ
โWhy are you asking the obvious? Iโm damned if I do, damned if I donโt, so why not just take a gamble?โ
Raylee gave him a cold glance before turning around and walking away. Casimir gripped her arm, his expression serious as he said, โExplain yourself clearly. Otherwise, I wonโt allow you to marry Jeremiah!โ
โCaz, why are you wasting time talking to her?โ Samuelโs sarcastic voice echoed from a distance. โShe is extremely vain. She would rather die if she isnโt allowed to marry into the Lorimer family, using them to climb the social ladder.โ
