Chapter 108: The Retaliation

She approached Mindy and, without hesitation, viciously slashed the latter's face. Raylee's actions were swift and unexpected. Before Mindy could dodge, she was cut by the knife. The pain was so intense that she let out a piercing scream.

โ€œAh, it hurt! How dare you cut me, you wretched woman! Iโ€™m going to kill you!โ€

With fierce determination, Mindy wanted to lunge at Raylee and beat her to death. Yet, when she saw the gleaming utility knife in Rayleeโ€™s hand, she didnโ€™t dare attack.

Raylee looked at the fresh blood on Mindyโ€™s face, a cruel smile forming at the corners of her mouth.

โ€œHahaha! Our grudges, past and present, will all be settled at once. Oh, no, this is just the appetizer. Iโ€™ll take everything you owe me, bit by bit.โ€

The utility knife was incredibly sharp and had deeply pierced Mindyโ€™s delicate skin, causing a ceaseless flow of blood. She felt the warm liquid trickling down her face and immediately covered it with her hand, which was soon soaked with fresh blood. Startled, she cried out in fear, โ€œMy face is ruined! Save me, Wavy! Quickly, call for an ambulanceโ€ฆโ€

Despite her frail condition, Waverly rushed to Mindy, tears streaming down her face in distress.

โ€œMindy, are you alright? Donโ€™t worry, your face isnโ€™t ruined. Let me help you stop the bleedingโ€ฆโ€

Tears streaming down her face, Waverly fetched the first-aid kit. She then proceeded to treat Mindyโ€™s wound with gauze and iodine. Looking at the ghastly wound, Waverly tearfully reproached Raylee.

โ€œRaylee, that was way out of line. How could you possibly hurt my best friend with a knife! If you have any grievances, take them out on me! Why did you have to lay a hand on Mindy?โ€

โ€œHeh, remember, those were your words, not mine. Iโ€™ll grant you your wish, so here I come!โ€

Rayleeโ€™s face was filled with chilling hostility. She raised the utility knife, advancing menacingly toward Waverly. However, before she could approach her, the three members of the Goodridge family had already rushed over to protect their little princess.

Harriet anxiously said, โ€œRayโ€“Ray, please donโ€™t hurt Wavy, sheโ€™s your sister!โ€

โ€œRaylee, if you dare harm Wavy, I will never forgive you!โ€ Samuel warned.

โ€œEnough! How dare you raise your hand in my presence? Do you think I, the head of the family, am dead?โ€ Alaric barked.

The protective stance of the three toward Waverly was a stark contrast to their earlier indifference. Raylee regarded Alaric with a sarcastic gaze.

โ€œExactly, it was Mindy who started it. She hit me right in front of you, as if you were invisible, didnโ€™t she?โ€

Alaric frowned, realizing that his indifference when Mindy hit Raylee earlier was inappropriate.

Mindy shouted, โ€œRaylee hurt me on purpose! Iโ€™m going to call the police. Iโ€™ll make sure she ends up behind bars!โ€

Alaric turned his head, glaring at her fiercely.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe you still have the nerve to call the police! You were the one who started the fight. What right do you have to blame Rayโ€“Ray for this?โ€

Upon being shouted at, Mindy tucked her head between her shoulders.

โ€œDaddy,โ€ Waverly defended through her tears. โ€œMindy only slapped Raylee, but Raylee cut her! Mindy is not just my best friend, but sheโ€™s also like a sister to me, as we grew up together. Even though she came from a poor family, she treated me very well and was an incredibly loyal friend. She only attacked Raylee because she couldnโ€™t stand to see me being bullied.โ€

Seeing his younger sisterโ€™s tear-streaked face, Samuel couldnโ€™t help but pull her into his embrace. He patted her back to soothe her, then Raylee gave a reproachful look.

โ€œWavy is right. Why did you have to resort to violence! The face means a lot to a girl, and yet, you had the audacity to cut Mindyโ€™s face. Youโ€™ve really crossed the line!โ€

โ€œI crossed the line!โ€ Raylee, brimming with resentment, pointed at Mindy.

โ€œThis woman hit me, and you did nothing. She slandered me in the bar, accusing me of pushing Waverly down the stairs, and still you did nothing.โ€ Raylee listed her grievances one by one.

โ€œAlso, four years ago, she wrongly accused me of stealing a necklace in public, and you did nothing about it. And nowโ€ฆ I just gave her a small cut and youโ€™re defending her? You really love to play favorites, donโ€™t you, dear brother?โ€

When she said the word โ€œbrother,โ€ Rayleeโ€™s tone was thick with malice and sarcasm. Her disgust couldnโ€™t be any more obvious. Samuel was left speechless by her sharp retort. Suddenly, he realized that he was the one who had crossed the line.

Not too long ago, he had seen Raylee on the brink of death. It was then that he had made a promise to himself to treat her better going forward. Yet, in a blink of an eye, he had neglected her by showing bias toward a stranger.

Samuel instinctively raised his hand, wanting to gently touch Rayleeโ€™s face and ask if it hurt from the slaps. He had barely lifted his hand when he quickly pulled it back. She would surely reject my show of concern, so why should I set myself up for humiliation?

โ€œWhat happened at the bar! Why hasnโ€™t anyone told me about it?โ€ Alaric suddenly asked with a serious expression. He deliberately skirted around the issue by only mentioning the incident at the bar and conveniently overlooking the matter from four years ago.
