Chapter 107: The Confrontation
As soon as Summer stepped into Waverlyโs room, she heard the latter sobbing softly. Inside, aside from the Goodridge family, was an unexpected guestโMindy, Waverlyโs best friend. Four years ago, she was the one who accused Raylee of stealing the necklace. When Raylee was first released from prison, she had a conflict with Mindy at a bar, and they hadnโt spoken since. However, she hadnโt forgotten about seeking revenge; the time for vengeance simply wasnโt ripe. She was determined to deal with those who had harmed her at her own pace. Jeremiah was her stepping stone on the path of revenge, so she had to have him, no matter what.
At that moment, Harriet, while wiping away her tears, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Mindy. โMindy, luckily, when Wavy called you, you noticed something was off and came to the Goodridge residence in time. Otherwise, we would not have discovered her attempting suicide by cutting her wrists. You saved my daughterโs life. You are a great benefactor to our family.โ
โMrs. Goodridge, Iโm Wavyโs best friend. I know her well. She wouldnโt have chosen suicide unless she was truly desperate.โ
Upon seeing Raylee, Mindy couldnโt help but point at her and hurl accusations. โMr. Goodridge, Mrs. Goodridge, it was Raylee who drove Wavy to suicide. You must stand up for Wavy by teaching Raylee a lesson!โ
โRaylee, this is all your fault!โ Samuel barked, throwing a sympathetic glance at Waverly, who was lying weakly on the bed. โIf it werenโt for your nonsensical chatter with Casimir in the ward, Wavy wouldnโt have tried to kill herself. Apologize to Wavy immediately and promise never to pursue Casimir again!โ
Kaylee furrowed her brows, casting a glance at Casimir, who was standing by the door. She began to speak in a pensive manner. โIt takes two to tango. I mean, I did utter a few words, but would Waverly have reacted so strongly if Casimir hadnโt given her a response?โ
When the blame was shifted to Casimir, the look in his eyes turned grim abruptly. His eyes held a complex gaze as he looked at Raylee, then turned to Waverly. His mouth opened and closed, as if he wanted to say something but held back.
Recalling yesterdayโs response from Casimir to Raylee, Samuel had a sudden realization. โThatโs right. Casimir, you also need to apologize to Wavy!โ
However, not only did Casimir not apologize to Waverly, but he even began to lecture her. โIt was just a joke, and yet, it escalated into a matter of life and death. If you are emotionally fragile, how are you going to navigate the long journey of life ahead? Waverly, there are countless ways to deal with unhappiness. Why did you specifically choose suicide? How could you do this to those who care about you?โ
Waverly was left stunned; her threat of suicide was merely a ruse to deter Raylee from pursuing Casimir. If it served as a lesson for Raylee, all the better. However, Casimirโs disdainful tone made her regret her suicide attempt.
โCasimir, I was just momentarily lost in despair. I realize my mistake now. I promise I wonโt try to take my own life again.โ Waverly hastily explained, terrified that Casimir might call off the wedding because of this incident.
โWavy, youโve done nothing wrong, why are you apologizing! Sheโs the one at fault!โ Mindy pointed at Raylee as she loudly protested.
Waverly glanced at Raylee, her eyes reddened. The look of injustice on her face was simply undeniable.
โWavy, youโre just too kind and too timid. Thatโs why people take advantage of you!โ
Furious, Mindy stormed up to Raylee, ready to stand up for her best friend. โYou b*tch, how dare you try and steal Wavyโs man and push her to the brink of despair? Today, I will take it upon myself to uphold justice!โ
Bang! A harsh slap landed squarely on Rayleeโs face, one that was unexpected. It stunned everyone in the room, and Rayleeโs head was knocked askew. She shot a cold glare at Mindy, then scanned the rest of the people in the room. No one made a sound or stood up for her. It seemed as though she deserved to be hit. Even Casimir, who had repeatedly promised to protect her in every possible way, just stood there, staring blankly as she was struck.
However, when Casimir met Rayleeโs gaze, he was far from feeling unmoved. He was waiting for Raylee to speak, hoping she would ask him to take her side. If she had the courage to declare her feelings for him in front of everyone, even boldly asking him to call off his engagement and marry her instead, he would then have the guts to agree. He needed her to make the first move. As long as she did, he would then close the huge gap between the two.
However, Raylee couldnโt read minds and had no way of knowing what he was thinking. All she saw was his indifference and that of everyone around her. Since no one would protect her, she decided to protect herself.
In the next moment, Raylee moved expressionlessly to the desk, picking up a utility knife.
