Too Late—I’m Taken 82

Listen to this chapter:

She was observing Dusson’s expressions. He showed no emotion, so she couldn’t guess what he was thinking, but since he didn’t say much, she figured she must have passed whatever test it was.

She glanced at the table full of food. “I’ll head back first. You all go ahead and eat.”

Rico was a little surprised. “Why are you in such a hurry to leave? Do you have something to do?”

Him nudged Dawson. “Tell her to stay!” He hadn’t figured it out—he was clearly intimidated by her, perhaps by her “oppressive authority,” and would only take orders from that shy old first. Dinoked completely indifferent.

Autumn stood up and smiled politely, yet with a hint of distance. “Mr. Faulkner, you all continue. I’ll head back now. Thank you for the fight.”

We stood up too. “No need to be so formal. It’s not a big deal. If it weren’t for the fact that Dawson was the more suitable one to put that beat in her place, I would’ve stepped in myself. Come on, at least eat something before you…”

“Her you tomorrow,” Autumn said.

Rico remembered they had a tennis match scheduled for tomorrow, so he didn’t insist any further. “Let me walk you out,” he offered, ever the gentleman.

“Alright, I’ll call a car right away.”

“It’s late. Calling a car isn’t safe; let me take you home.”

Autumn was momentarily speechless. Sometimes, it wasn’t good to be overly enthusiastic either.

Just as she was thinking of how to refuse, Dawson suddenly stood up and walked out.

Rico immediately shifted his attention to him. “What’s going on?”

“This isn’t boxing, so I’m heading back.”

Nico was speechless. What had gotten into him now? Didn’t he just order a whole table of food!

After Dan left the private room, Autumn waved goodbye to the others and followed suit. She had no plans to go home with Dawson, of course. There were plenty of cabs outside the business club. She just needed…

Just then, a familiar Bentley pulled up in front of her.

She glanced over and was surprised to see Dawson was the one driving. So, had the chauffeur already clocked out?

At this point, there was no need for words. She didn’t dare sit in the back, so she opened the front passenger door and got in. With a thud, the door shut behind her. The car drove steadily toward Flery Residences. They were heading home together.

Autumn didn’t thank him again. Instead, she recalled the logo on the takeout Dawson had ordered and looked up the restaurant. Then, she tried to remember the dishes he had chosen. After that, she placed the same order and had it delivered to his home. It was too much food to finish, and she halved the portions.

This was closer to the apartment than the club was. They took the elevator together.

The delivery had already arrived, and the rider was about to call Autumn. This time the delivery rider was a woman.

As soon as she heard the elevator door open, Autumn’s phone rang at the same time. It was confirmation that she had reached the owner of the takeout.

“Ma’am, your order has arrived. Enjoy your meal,” the rider said with a smile.

Junimit was speechless. They had already been mistaken once before to be a married couple, and now it happened again.

Dawson didn’t care, and since he didn’t, neither did Autumn. After all, the rider was just a stranger. If there was a misunderstanding, so be it.

Autumn took the takeout bag from the delivery rider and waited for her to close. Then, she said, “You gave me a ride home, so I thought I’d treat you to supper.”

Lawson didn’t interrupt.

Autumn gestured to the suit jacket she was carrying. “I’ll take this suit jacket to the dry cleaners and return it to you afterward.”

Dawson glanced briefly at her other hand, then batted to enter the door code. The datum key's code used to be openly accessible; at the surprise, it had been changed to 12. Well, maybe he had just changed it on a whim.

Autumn waited until Dawson stepped inside before handing him the takeout bag, but he just walked straight in without taking it.

She quickly stepped to the doorway and called out, “Coming in,” he said coolly from inside.
