Chapter 52
Theria, Wany, Mest, Hele, Gesping, Abus, and Hry, senior members of the firm, pretended to be deeply focused on their laptops, as if attending a college lecture. Olivia was curious; she had already noticed them from across the room. Olivia was speechless. If they were whispering about her senior, could she actually be a big shot in the industry?
She turned a corner and caught sight of the glass-walled meeting room. Instantly, everyone turned back to their work. The moment she saw Emilia seated inside, Olivia stopped abruptly. A faint smirk later appeared on her lips. So they did know this senior, but only from afar.
Olivia knew all about Emilia Mason, but Frilla had no idea who Olivia was. Magnar opened the door, and Olivia entered the meeting room.
At the sound of her footsteps, Emilia looked toward the door. Upon seeing Olivia, she merely nodded politely and didn't bother to stand. Olivia took her seat and shot Magnar a meaningful glance, signaling for him to make the introductions.
“Miss Clements, this is Emilia Mason. She graduated with honors in computer science from Averpark University,” Magnar began. “Currently, she’s a doctoral student at one of the top colleges in Mavenloch. We used to be classmates at Averpark University. Technically, she’s your senior, since she graduated five years ago.”
Though Emilia’s college grades were only slightly above average, she had written an outstanding thesis, which earned her offers from prestigious international schools. She was known at Averpark University as a distinguished graduate. She was also stunningly beautiful—undisputed school belle material among her peers.
From the beginning, Magnus had secretly harbored feelings for Emilia. But once he realized how far apart their worlds were, he gave up. When she suddenly reached out for help, there was no way he could refuse.
After providing a brief introduction, Magnus stepped aside. It was now up to Olivia and Emilia to talk—that was just how these things went in professional circles.
But Olivia, after the introductions, turned to Magnus and asked plainly, “Why is she here?”
Emilia’s expression darkened. Even Magnar was stunned. Something didn’t feel right. He began to sweat.
“I don’t know,” he stammered, then turned to Emilia. “Why don’t you explain?”
Emilia met Olivia’s indifferent gaze. There was no warmth, no curiosity, no interest in her at all. Olivia was younger. Had she truly not heard of Emilia?
For a few days, Emilia had been seen frequently with Damien. The elite circles in Hansoor were well aware of her connection to the Caldwell Group. Many had tried to cozy up to her. Even the son of Havermoor’s wealthiest man, Jayden, had reached out. So Emilia was genuinely shocked by Olivia’s cold demeanor.
It was possible that Olivia’s perceived indifference toward Emilia was a byproduct of her exclusion from the elite circle or her own youthful insecurities. She seemed driven by a desire to establish connection and protect her sense of self-worth.
Emilia studied her for a moment, then forced a calm expression. “I’m here to ask for a small favor.”
Ordinarily, after such a request, Olivia would have been expected to ask what the favor was, but she said nothing.
Emilia’s irritation grew, though she maintained her composure. “I’m the lead researcher at Luther’s lab, and we’ve encountered a problem with our project. I believe Professor Huffman already contacted you, so you should be familiar with the details. I came here today hoping you’d be willing to help, Miss Clements.”
Olivia smirked slightly. “And why would I do that?”
Emilia bristled. “Miss Clements, do you even know who I am?”
She turned to Magnar, her tone sharp. “Tell her who I am.”
Magnar opened his mouth, but Olivia cut him off. “No need.”
Emilia glared at her. Coldly, she said, “If Professor Huffman asked you to do this for him, then I suggest you return to him. If there’s anything he needs, I’ll speak to him directly. You’re just a junior associate. You’re not qualified to speak to the team.”
“Miss Clements, you really don’t seem to like me,” Emilia added.
Emilia finished the conversation, stood, and turned to Magnar. Her voice was sharp and cold. “Send your junior associate out. Then come to my office.” Olivia cast one last glance at Emilia and said to Magnus, “This is a workplace, not a reunion hall. Don’t use it to catch up with your schoolmates. Understood?”
