Chapter 756

Adela added, โ€œGod willing, sooner rather than later!โ€

Mentioning Micah was like rubbing salt in Dannyโ€™s wounds. Ivy feared the old man might break down again, so she quickly redirected the conversation.

โ€œHal, why donโ€™t you tell Grandma a story? She must be bored in this hospital room.โ€

Halley looked a little reluctant, but Ivy whispered in his ear, โ€œIf you tell Grandma a story, you get to come home with me tonight.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Halleyโ€™s eyes went wide with excitement.

โ€œOf course! I never lie.โ€

In an instant, he leapt off the couch, quickly straightening his pants before scampering to the bedside. โ€œGrandma, what story do you want to hear? Do you want The Octonauts, Paw Patrol, The Magic Beans, or Diego? I know them allโ€”I can tell you whichever you want!โ€

Adela couldnโ€™t help laughing at her grandsonโ€™s cleverness, and soon the two of them were chatting away, completely absorbed in their own little world.

That evening at dinner, Ivy brought Halley along.

Jamison eyed his nephew, brows furrowing. โ€œWhatโ€™s he doing here?โ€

โ€œHaving dinner, obviously!โ€ Halley shot back, bold as brass. โ€œNot only am I eating with Aunt Ivy, Iโ€™m sleeping over with her tonight, too!โ€

Jamisonโ€™s expression froze, and he gave his wife a long, meaningful look.

Ivy lowered her voice. โ€œHis parents are swamped at work lately. Heโ€™s been left with the nanny most nightsโ€”itโ€™s kind of sadโ€ฆโ€

Jamison looked at the kid, who was acting anything but unfortunate, and thought to himself that โ€œpitifulโ€ was a stretch.

When they were getting in the car, Jamison asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s your sister? Home by herself, or did she go to your grandmaโ€™s?โ€

โ€œMy sisterโ€™s at a school eventโ€”sheโ€™s not home this weekend,โ€ Halley answered crisply.

Mona was at a private middle school with a bustling social calendar; weekends at home were rare.

Katrinaโ€™s eyes widened in surprise as she turned to Ivy. โ€œHow old is this little guy? Heโ€™s so sharp for his age!โ€

Ivy chuckled, settling into her seat. โ€œThatโ€™s just the Ludwig family genes for you. And itโ€™s not just the Ludwigsโ€”his momโ€™s side is just as impressive.โ€

Davinaโ€™s family came from old money, with generations in politics and plenty of clout.

Kids raised in families like that always seemed to be a step ahead of everyone else. Katrina nodded in agreement. โ€œI bet when you and Dr. Ludwig have a child, theyโ€™ll be a little genius, too.โ€

A childโ€ฆ

With everything that had been happening lately, Ivy hadnโ€™t thought about that in a long time.

At the dinner table, with Halley present, there were plenty of things they couldnโ€™t discuss openly.

But having a child around also brightened the mood and chased away some of the heavy silence.

After dinner, Halley spotted a school of fish swimming in the garden pond and dashed outside to feed them. Ivy and Katrina followed to keep an eye on him.

That left just the two men at the table.

โ€œI heard the Shepherd family is still making a fuss. Theyโ€™ve hired some flashy defense attorney and are threatening to sue your sister for a huge settlement. How are you guys holding up?โ€ Naylor kept close tabs on the whole mess, worried for his friend.

Jamison sighed. โ€œMy brotherโ€™s handling most of it. I donโ€™t think itโ€™ll be a problem, but the media storm is going to drag on for a while.โ€

โ€œWell, Farley Shepherd was the one at fault, so that should work in your favor. And I heard the mistress and her kid have turned on the Shepherds over the inheritance.โ€

Legally, the estate would be divided according to the will, but the Shepherd familyโ€™s company shares were another matterโ€”so many relatives had their hands in the pot.

When money was on the line, family ties didnโ€™t count for much. Siblings would turn on each other, and you never knew who might stab you in the back.

โ€œNo surprise there,โ€ Jamison said with a derisive snort. โ€œThe Shepherds only managed to look good these past years because they clung to the Ludwigs. Now that everythingโ€™s blown up, they can forget about us bailing them out. Short-sighted, the lot of them. All this infighting was inevitable.โ€

Forget the mistress and her sonโ€”give it a few days, and the Shepherd relatives would be at each otherโ€™s throats, too.

Out in the garden, Ivy watched Halley while chatting with her friend.

โ€œHowโ€™s your mom doing? Is the surgery scheduled?โ€

Katrina nodded. โ€œYeah. As soon as the next round of chemoโ€™s done, the doctors want to operate. Sheโ€™s actually doing a lot betterโ€”she can sit up and eat on her own now.โ€

Katrinaโ€™s mother had been badly hurt after a fall, but months of care had finally brought some progress.

Ivy was genuinely relieved for her friend.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about me, everythingโ€™s fine on my end,โ€ Katrina said softly, then hesitated. โ€œBut what about you and Dr. Ludwig? Is his family blaming you for any of this? I know Dr. Ludwig wouldnโ€™t, but your in-lawsโ€ฆ well, you never know.โ€

After all, the person who died was their grandson.

And their only daughter had been arrested.

Ivy watched the fish darting through the water, letting out a sigh. โ€œNot for now. His mother doesnโ€™t know anything yet. His father knows, but he hasnโ€™t said much. Heโ€™s just heartbroken, anxious, and trying not to show it in front of herโ€ฆโ€

Katrina nodded somberly. โ€œNo parent should have to bury their child. Itโ€™s impossible to accept. I saw Dr. Ludwig at dinnerโ€”he looked exhausted, completely worn out.โ€

โ€œHe barely slept last night.โ€

Katrina understood. With tragedy like this, who could sleep?

โ€œHal, be careful, donโ€™t get too close to the water,โ€ Ivy called, worried Halley might slip.

The stream was shallowโ€”drowning wasnโ€™t a fearโ€”but it was chilly out, and she didnโ€™t want him catching a cold.

Halley, blissfully unaware of the adultsโ€™ worries, called out excitedly, โ€œAunt Ivy, look! This fish has such a beautiful tail!โ€

Ivy walked over, smiling at the bright colors flashing in the water.

โ€œAunt Ivy, do you know what kind of fish this is?โ€

Ivy shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m not sure, but I can look it up for you.โ€

โ€œI know! Thatโ€™s a betta fish. And those red ones are just plain old goldfish.โ€ Halley grinned, clearly proud of himself. He obviously knew all alongโ€”he just wanted to quiz Ivy.

Katrina turned to Ivy in amazement. โ€œHe really does know everything.โ€

โ€œYep, heโ€™s a little expert,โ€ Ivy replied with a laugh.

They were still enjoying the garden when Jamison came outside.

Seeing her husbandโ€™s tall, familiar figure, Ivy couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œReady to head home?โ€

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™ll drop you guys off, then I have to get back to the hospital.โ€

Jamison turned to his nephew. โ€œHal, your dad just called. The driverโ€™s waiting to take you homeโ€”are you coming?โ€

Halley shook his head without hesitation. โ€œNo, I want to stay with Aunt Ivy! We talked about it earlier!โ€

Katrina raised an eyebrow at Ivy. โ€œHeโ€™s really attached to you, isnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œHe used to be glued to Jamison, but ever since he met me heโ€™s switched sides. He even says he wants to be our son,โ€ Ivy whispered conspiratorially.

Katrina laughed.

Jamison pulled out his phone. โ€œAlright, then you can tell your dad yourself.โ€

He dialed his brotherโ€™s number and, as Halley came closer, put the call on speaker.
