Listen to this chapter:

โ€œIโ€™m not exaggerating. Youโ€™re beautiful, you just donโ€™t realize it yourselfโ€“which is probably why you canโ€™t imagine how much you amaze everyone else.โ€

There was something about the way girls complimented each otherโ€“it always sounded so genuine. Ivy couldnโ€™t help laughing, delighted by the praise.

The two of them hit the mall and shopped with abandon. Watching Sophiaโ€™s effortless spending and sharp eye for style, Ivy guessed her friend must come from a pretty well-off family, too.

Maybe running a coffee shop was just a hobby for her.

They finally plopped down on a bench, worn out, when Sophiaโ€™s phone rang.

โ€œIvy, guess whoโ€™s calling?โ€ Sophia pulled out her phone, putting on a mysterious air.

Ivyโ€™s curiosity was piqued. โ€œWho is it?โ€

It couldnโ€™t possibly be Jamison.

โ€œItโ€™s Dale,โ€ Sophia replied, muttering, โ€œWasnโ€™t he working overtime this morningโ€ฆ?โ€

She answered the call as she spoke.

โ€œHey. Yeahโ€ฆ No, Iโ€™m not at the hotelโ€“Iโ€™m out shopping with Ivy at Harbor City Mall. You want to join us? Sure! If someoneโ€™s treating, Iโ€™m all for it. See you soon, thenโ€ฆโ€

After hanging up, Sophia tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, grinning. โ€œDale Sullivan says heโ€™s finally done with work and wants to take us out for a meal.โ€

Ivy remembered her little joke with Jamison that morning and, trying to sound casual, asked, โ€œWhat made him call you out of the blue?โ€

โ€œOh, he said he sent a message to the group chat. Jayโ€™s already on his way to the airport, and Coach Murphyโ€™s got a flight at three this afternoon. He saw I hadnโ€™t replied and decided to call instead.โ€

Sure enough, when Ivy checked WhatsApp, she saw Daleโ€™s message in the group.

Jay had already texted that heโ€™d arrived at the airport. Both Ivy and Sophia quickly sent their goodbyes: โ€œSafe travelsโ€“letโ€™s get together again soon.โ€

Turns out, sheโ€™d overthought things.

It was close to one when Dale Sullivan finally showed up at the mall.

โ€œSorry to keep you waiting. The office is a bit of a trek from here,โ€ Dale said. He was average height, average looks, but he radiated humility and good manners. He left a solid first impression.

Sophia waved off his apology. โ€œForget it. Letโ€™s head upstairs and find someplace to eat before we pass out from hunger.โ€

They took the elevator to the top floor, where all the restaurants were.

โ€œOrder whatever you like. Lunch is on meโ€“no need to save me money,โ€ Dale declared grandly.

Sophia didnโ€™t stand on ceremony. โ€œHow about Japanese?โ€

Dale looked at Ivy, who nodded. โ€œSure.โ€

Truth be told, Ivy wasnโ€™t exactly a fan of Japanese food, but she didnโ€™t mind it either.

Both she and Dale were locals, so it was only right to let their out-of-town guest pick.

So the three of them headed into a Japanese place.

Just after theyโ€™d ordered, Ivyโ€™s phone rangโ€“Jamison.

She didnโ€™t bother to step away, just answered right there at the table.

โ€œStill out shopping?โ€ Jamison had seen the group chat updates, and knew his wife was out with Bob and the others.

โ€œYeah, we just sat down for lunch. Dale Sullivanโ€™s here too. Want to join us?โ€ Ivy asked offhandedly.

โ€œI wish. Iโ€™ve got a surgery coming up. Just calling to let you know Iโ€™ll be working late. You can either wait for me at home or head to your parentsโ€˜ place first.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll wait for you at home.โ€

โ€œAlright. Iโ€™ll let you eat. Talk later.โ€

Jamison was always busyโ€“when he said he had to go, he meant it.

As Ivy set down her phone, Dale instantly asked, โ€œIs Dr. Ludwig coming to join us?โ€

โ€œNo, heโ€™s got surgery.โ€

Sophiaโ€™s eyes sparkled with admiration. โ€œAfter you told me about Dr. Ludwig last night, I looked him up online. Heโ€™s incredible! So young, already a professor and expert in his fieldโ€“and coming from such a privileged family, yet still working so hard. Thatโ€™s real greatness!โ€

Ivy smiled, a little embarrassed. โ€œYeah, heโ€™s always had this quiet sense of purpose. He didnโ€™t want to lean on his familyโ€™s reputation, so he worked his way up in medicine on his own.โ€

Dale nodded in agreement. โ€œThatโ€™s the kind of person society needsโ€“someone whoโ€™s wealthy enough not to worry about making ends meet, who can take his time with research and really focus on tackling tough cases. And because heโ€™s financially secure, he wouldnโ€™t compromise his ethics for money, so he can treat his patients with complete fairness.โ€

Sophia turned to Dale. โ€œDidnโ€™t you say last night he helped your niece get her medical bills reduced?โ€

โ€œHe did. Dr. Ludwig started a foundation that helps seriously ill patients from struggling families. When my niece was in that car accident, the medical bills were astronomical. My sister-in-law was hurt, too, and the expenses were just overwhelming. Dr. Ludwig helped us apply for aid, and the foundation covered the biggest surgery. Our whole family is grateful to him. Without his help, we might have lost my nieceโ€“and my brotherโ€™s family wouldโ€™ve been devastated.โ€

Ivy listened quietly, her husbandโ€™s handsome, reserved face flickering through her mind.

She recalled when sheโ€™d first met himโ€“sheโ€™d thought he was a mediocre doctor, and her impression of him couldnโ€™t have been worse.

If only she could go back in time and give herself a reality check. Sheโ€™d really been blind.

Sophia turned to her. โ€œIvy, was it his compassion and character that made you fall for Dr. Ludwig?โ€

Ivy gave a sheepish smile. She wanted to deny it, but saying bad things about her husband behind his back didnโ€™t feel right. So she just nodded. โ€œYeah. I first ran into him at the hospital. He was in the middle of saving someoneโ€™s lifeโ€“it was just like those videos you see online. Calm under pressure, decisive, completely in control. I was honestly blown away.โ€
