Jamison had never realized he harbored such quirks, but judging from Ivyโs expression, she didnโt seem to be making any of it up.
He sat in silence for a moment, nervously clutching the blanket, before finally asking, โBesides taking off my own clothes, what else did I do?โ
Seeing how genuinely baffled he was, Ivy couldnโt help but tease him. She turned over, propping her head on one hand, her bright eyes glinting mischievously. โLetโs seeโฆ You kept confessing your love, wouldnโt let go of me, acting both needy and adorably stubbornโฆโ
Before she could finish, Jamison tried to protest, but Ivy raised her other hand to cut him off, grinning as she went on, โDonโt believe me? Ask your nephew. He even took picturesโsaid that scene was too rare to miss!โ
Jamisonโs face turned to stone, and Ivy burst out laughing at his mortification.
Men and their prideโthere was no way Jamison would actually ask about it. All he could do was stew in embarrassment, wrapping himself tighter in the blanket as he headed for the bathroom.
Ivy called after him, still in high spirits, โWhere are you off to, all wrapped up? Itโs not like I didnโt see everything last night! Hey, whyโd you stop asking? Thereโs plenty more I could tell you about your drunken escapadesโฆ Dr. Ludwig?โ
Her answer came in the form of the bathroom door closingโfirm, final, and just a little sulky.
Ivy laughed so hard she gave up on sleep entirely and grabbed her phone. Sure enough, a flood of WhatsApp notifications waited at the top of the screen.
The group chat, โStonks Only Go Up,โ was already buzzing.
Bob: Are the gentlemen who drank too much awake yet? Everyone alright?
Jay: Battling a killer hangoverโฆ
Dale Sullivan: Pulled an all-nighter at the office fixing bugs.
Coach Murphy: [thumbs up] Thatโs dedication.
Coach Murphy: Iโm still in bed. My head feels like itโs in a vice.
Dale Sullivan: Dr. Ludwig drank the most last nightโno word from him yet.
Bob: No worries, Ivy will take good care of her husband.
Jay: Yeah, weโre all single here. The only two who arenโt just happen to be married to each other.
Jay: Instead of worrying about them, maybe worry about yourself.
Dale Sullivan: Seeing the Ludwigs so sweet together almost makes me want to fall in love.
Coach Murphy: So do it! You coders make good money; youโre a hot commodity.
Bob: Straight-laced engineersโgood for earning, not much else.
Jay: Come on, you ladies set the bar too high! Making money is the best quality a guy can have, and if heโs too busy to spend it, that just means more for his partner, right?
Bob: [laughing emoji] When you put it that way, itโs like having your own personal ATM with zero maintenance.
Ivy scrolled through the chat, a smile tugging at her lips. Maybe, just maybe, another couple might blossom in this group after all.
When Jamison finally emerged from the shower, Ivy called him over.
โWhat is it?โ Dr. Ludwig still looked a bit sheepish, his pride clearly wounded from the previous nightโs antics.
Ivy turned her phone toward him. โWhat do you thinkโdo these two have a shot?โ
โWho?โ
โSophia and Dale Sullivan. She runs that trendy cafรฉโdefinitely a romantic at heart. Heโs a classic, introverted engineer. Total oppositesโthey might just balance each other out.โ
Jamison shot her a look. โYouโre addicted to playing matchmaker, arenโt you?โ
Sheโd already set up her best friend with one of his closest buddies, and now she was eyeing up potential matches even in her online circles.
โIt was just a thought,โ Ivy said lightly.
Jamison headed to the walk-in closet to get dressed, calling out, โIโm heading back to the hospital. Iโll try to get home early this afternoon, and tonight weโre having dinner at the old place.โ
Ivy frowned. โDo I really have to go?โ
โYes,โ Jamison replied, his tone softening. โEverything with my sister has been blowing up, and the whole family knows now. My grandmotherโs health wasn't great to begin with, and this has only made things worseโsheโs so upset, itโs made her sick.โ
Ivyโs heart tightened at that.
She thought of Carlaโher only son in such dire straits, and her husbandโs affair, with a secret child added to the scandal. The rest of her life would be nothing but hardship.
Men could father children well into their sixties, but for women, having kids after forty was nearly impossible.
She shuddered to think what would happen if Micah were to pass away. What would Carla do then?
Even with all their wealth and status, losing a child in middle age and a husbandโs betrayal would be enough to break anyone.
She worried Carla might not survive the blow.
And if something happened to Carla, Jamisonโs elderly parents would be devastated beyond measure.
Ivyโs own life had been enough of a struggle, but in that moment, she couldnโt help but feel a surge of sympathy for Carla.
Then she thought of Adela Ludwigโs recent bouts of illness, and a shadow fell over her heart.
Fine, she decided. Sheโd go back with Jamison and check on the old folks.
If things got tense, she could always keep her distanceโmaybe even eat at a separate table.
After Jamison left for work, Ivy got a call from Sophia. Last night, everyone had exchanged contact info at dinner, turning online friendships into real-life bonds.
โIvy, want to hang out with me today? Iโm bored out of my mind at the hotel,โ Sophia pleaded.
โOf course! Iโll come pick you up.โ
Sophia had come all this way just to see her; of course, Ivy would play the gracious host.
She called for the driver, and soon she was on her way to the hotel.
Once Ivy slid into the backseat, Sophia looked her up and down. With a teasing smile, she said, โI canโt imagine how much self-control Dr. Ludwig must have to be around you every day.โ
Ivy blushed, a soft, shy smile on her lips. โYouโre exaggerating.โ
