Chapter 694
He was drawn to that very contradictionโthe tangled mess that made her so compelling.
Jamison caught on, a spark of amusement tugging at his lips. โSo what youโre saying isโshe went after you because it was the best way to get her mother the treatment she needed. She claims to love you, but really, itโs the perks of being Mr. Wilsonโs son and Professor Pennโs stepson sheโs after. Youโre just a means to an end?โ
โExactly! It couldnโt be more obvious. She doesnโt even bother to hide it.โ
The more Naylor spoke, the more frustrated he became. With Katrina right there in the room, though, he had to keep his voice low, even as the veins in his neck started to bulge.
He shot a glare toward the window, where Ivy and Katrina were soaking up the sun on the patio. His tone grew sour. โHonestly, I bet your wifeโs been giving her adviceโtreating me like some gullible fool.โ
Jamison bristled. โNonsense. My wife is the sweetest woman youโll ever meet. Sheโs got no hidden agenda.โ
Naylor rolled his eyes so hard it was a wonder they stayed in his head. โPlease. Youโre so full of it. Your wife is sharper than a tackโsheโs got more schemes than a chess grandmaster. Sweet and innocent? Give me a break.โ
โYouโve got her all wrong,โ Jamison countered, refusing to accept there could be anything amiss with his wifeโor at the very least, refusing to admit it out loud, especially if someone else was the one pointing it out. Defending her was practically second nature for a man besotted with his own wife.
Jamison changed the subject. โIf you think youโre being used, why let it happen? Why go along with it so willingly?โ
Naylor straightened, indignant. โBecause Iโm a decent guy, thatโs why. I canโt stand to see a woman suffer. And anyway, I was born a hopeless romantic. You have no idea what the Lester family is likeโthey tried to set her up with a guy old enough to be her grandfather. Can you imagine the scene?โ
Jamison, who usually didnโt care for gossip or other peopleโs drama, found himself oddly invested todayโmaybe because it involved his best friend and his wifeโs closest friend. He was anxious that any fallout between Naylor and Katrina could end up putting a strain on his own marriage. He pressed, โWhat was it like?โ
Naylor grimaced. โIt was like watching her being pawned off to some sugar daddy. I couldnโt take it.โ
And he wasnโt exaggerating. Seeing Katrina on that awkward date with the old man had rattled him so much that, on impulse, heโd agreed to her โcourtship.โ After they slept together, he realized things felt differentโhe was hooked, plain and simple.
โIf thatโs how it started, then what you feel for her is just pityโpity for her situation with the Lester family, pity for her motherโs illness. Thatโs not love,โ Jamison pointed out.
Naylor gave a resigned shrug, letting his arms drape over the back of the couch as he sighed. โWho knows? All I know is Iโm in too deep now. Guess Iโm just another fool who tried to play the game and got played instead.โ
Jamison laughed. โServes you right.โ
โSome friend you are, getting a kick out of my misery,โ Naylor shot back, but Jamison ignored him, warning instead, โIvy doesnโt have a lot of close friends, and Katrinaโs more like a sister to her than anything. So even if things donโt work out between you two, handle it like an adult. Donโt let your breakup mess things up between Ivy and me.โ
Naylor glared. โYouโd pick your wife over your buddy any day. What happened to brotherhood, huh? Has marriage sucked all the backbone out of you?โ
Jamison just snorted. โYouโre not far behind, my friend.โ
โSpare me, I donโt need your curse.โ
Meanwhile, over on the sofa by the window, Katrina was confiding in Ivy about the dayโs events.
โYou already met his mom?โ Ivy was surprised. โHow did that go? What did she think of you?โ
โI didnโt really meet her, not properly. I was too nervous, so I just told her I was a friend asking for help. Professor Penn doesnโt know Iโm dating her son.โ Katrinaโs cheeks flushed as she spoke, her voice dropping to a whisper.
Ivy chuckled. โYou really think you fooled her? Sheโs a professor, not an idiot. Sheโs been around the blockโthereโs no way she didnโt see right through you. She probably just didnโt want to embarrass you.โ
Ivy had met Professor Penn enough times to know she was nobodyโs foolโand always carried herself with understated grace. The whole Penn family had class. Hearing this, Katrinaโs nerves kicked up again as she replayed every moment in her mind, suddenly worried.
โWhat if she thinks Iโm a liar? Or that Iโm just using Naylor to get help for my mom? What if she thinks Iโm manipulative?โ
โI canโt say,โ Ivy replied gently.
Katrina sighed, half talking to herself. โIf Iโd known, I never wouldโve gone. I shouldโve let Naylor talk to her instead. Still, she was so graciousโshe spoke gently, and you could tell she was kind to those interns, too.โ
Ivy shot her a teasing look. โGetting excited about joining the family, are we?โ
Katrina blushed. โNo way, thatโs not up to me.โ Truth was, she liked both Naylor and Professor Penn. Maybe thatโs why she felt so insecureโshe didnโt feel like she measured up. Her family background, her financesโshe fell short in every category. And then there was her motherโs illness. Anyone with half a brain would run for the hills, so why was Naylor still here? She honestly couldnโt figure out what he saw in her.
After half an hour, as they got ready to leave, Naylor suddenly remembered something. โOh right, you two have been cooped up in the hospital so much lately, I bet you havenโt heard the big news.โ
Jamison scoffed, โYouโre such a gossip. Have some dignity, man.โ
