Chapter 694

He was drawn to that very contradictionโ€“the tangled mess that made her so compelling.

Jamison caught on, a spark of amusement tugging at his lips. โ€œSo what youโ€™re saying isโ€“she went after you because it was the best way to get her mother the treatment she needed. She claims to love you, but really, itโ€™s the perks of being Mr. Wilsonโ€™s son and Professor Pennโ€™s stepson sheโ€™s after. Youโ€™re just a means to an end?โ€

โ€œExactly! It couldnโ€™t be more obvious. She doesnโ€™t even bother to hide it.โ€

The more Naylor spoke, the more frustrated he became. With Katrina right there in the room, though, he had to keep his voice low, even as the veins in his neck started to bulge.

He shot a glare toward the window, where Ivy and Katrina were soaking up the sun on the patio. His tone grew sour. โ€œHonestly, I bet your wifeโ€™s been giving her adviceโ€“treating me like some gullible fool.โ€

Jamison bristled. โ€œNonsense. My wife is the sweetest woman youโ€™ll ever meet. Sheโ€™s got no hidden agenda.โ€

Naylor rolled his eyes so hard it was a wonder they stayed in his head. โ€œPlease. Youโ€™re so full of it. Your wife is sharper than a tackโ€“sheโ€™s got more schemes than a chess grandmaster. Sweet and innocent? Give me a break.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve got her all wrong,โ€ Jamison countered, refusing to accept there could be anything amiss with his wifeโ€“or at the very least, refusing to admit it out loud, especially if someone else was the one pointing it out. Defending her was practically second nature for a man besotted with his own wife.

Jamison changed the subject. โ€œIf you think youโ€™re being used, why let it happen? Why go along with it so willingly?โ€

Naylor straightened, indignant. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a decent guy, thatโ€™s why. I canโ€™t stand to see a woman suffer. And anyway, I was born a hopeless romantic. You have no idea what the Lester family is likeโ€“they tried to set her up with a guy old enough to be her grandfather. Can you imagine the scene?โ€

Jamison, who usually didnโ€™t care for gossip or other peopleโ€™s drama, found himself oddly invested todayโ€”maybe because it involved his best friend and his wifeโ€™s closest friend. He was anxious that any fallout between Naylor and Katrina could end up putting a strain on his own marriage. He pressed, โ€œWhat was it like?โ€

Naylor grimaced. โ€œIt was like watching her being pawned off to some sugar daddy. I couldnโ€™t take it.โ€

And he wasnโ€™t exaggerating. Seeing Katrina on that awkward date with the old man had rattled him so much that, on impulse, heโ€™d agreed to her โ€œcourtship.โ€ After they slept together, he realized things felt differentโ€“he was hooked, plain and simple.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s how it started, then what you feel for her is just pityโ€“pity for her situation with the Lester family, pity for her motherโ€™s illness. Thatโ€™s not love,โ€ Jamison pointed out.

Naylor gave a resigned shrug, letting his arms drape over the back of the couch as he sighed. โ€œWho knows? All I know is Iโ€™m in too deep now. Guess Iโ€™m just another fool who tried to play the game and got played instead.โ€

Jamison laughed. โ€œServes you right.โ€

โ€œSome friend you are, getting a kick out of my misery,โ€ Naylor shot back, but Jamison ignored him, warning instead, โ€œIvy doesnโ€™t have a lot of close friends, and Katrinaโ€™s more like a sister to her than anything. So even if things donโ€™t work out between you two, handle it like an adult. Donโ€™t let your breakup mess things up between Ivy and me.โ€

Naylor glared. โ€œYouโ€™d pick your wife over your buddy any day. What happened to brotherhood, huh? Has marriage sucked all the backbone out of you?โ€

Jamison just snorted. โ€œYouโ€™re not far behind, my friend.โ€

โ€œSpare me, I donโ€™t need your curse.โ€

Meanwhile, over on the sofa by the window, Katrina was confiding in Ivy about the dayโ€™s events.

โ€œYou already met his mom?โ€ Ivy was surprised. โ€œHow did that go? What did she think of you?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t really meet her, not properly. I was too nervous, so I just told her I was a friend asking for help. Professor Penn doesnโ€™t know Iโ€™m dating her son.โ€ Katrinaโ€™s cheeks flushed as she spoke, her voice dropping to a whisper.

Ivy chuckled. โ€œYou really think you fooled her? Sheโ€™s a professor, not an idiot. Sheโ€™s been around the blockโ€“thereโ€™s no way she didnโ€™t see right through you. She probably just didnโ€™t want to embarrass you.โ€

Ivy had met Professor Penn enough times to know she was nobodyโ€™s foolโ€“and always carried herself with understated grace. The whole Penn family had class. Hearing this, Katrinaโ€™s nerves kicked up again as she replayed every moment in her mind, suddenly worried.

โ€œWhat if she thinks Iโ€™m a liar? Or that Iโ€™m just using Naylor to get help for my mom? What if she thinks Iโ€™m manipulative?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t say,โ€ Ivy replied gently.

Katrina sighed, half talking to herself. โ€œIf Iโ€™d known, I never wouldโ€™ve gone. I shouldโ€™ve let Naylor talk to her instead. Still, she was so graciousโ€“she spoke gently, and you could tell she was kind to those interns, too.โ€

Ivy shot her a teasing look. โ€œGetting excited about joining the family, are we?โ€

Katrina blushed. โ€œNo way, thatโ€™s not up to me.โ€ Truth was, she liked both Naylor and Professor Penn. Maybe thatโ€™s why she felt so insecureโ€“she didnโ€™t feel like she measured up. Her family background, her financesโ€“she fell short in every category. And then there was her motherโ€™s illness. Anyone with half a brain would run for the hills, so why was Naylor still here? She honestly couldnโ€™t figure out what he saw in her.

After half an hour, as they got ready to leave, Naylor suddenly remembered something. โ€œOh right, you two have been cooped up in the hospital so much lately, I bet you havenโ€™t heard the big news.โ€

Jamison scoffed, โ€œYouโ€™re such a gossip. Have some dignity, man.โ€
