Listen to this chapter:

Ivy had just left the library and was meeting Katrina for dinner that evening. Remembering how sheโ€™d hung up on someone whoโ€™d called earlier that afternoon, she figured now was a good time to return the call.

โ€œWhat are you up to?โ€ she asked.

โ€œIโ€™m at the hospital. Working,โ€ came Jamisonโ€™s reply.

Ivy frowned, puzzled. โ€œDidnโ€™t you say you werenโ€™t back on shift until tomorrow?โ€

โ€œYou went to campus, and thereโ€™s nothing for me to do at home. Thereโ€™s plenty of work piling up here,โ€ he said, sounding just a bit put-upon.

His tone made Ivy laugh. โ€œPoor Professor Ludwig. What would they do without you?โ€

โ€œAt least you know,โ€ he teased.

Jamison kept things light, never mentioning that his mother had just collapsed and been admitted to the hospital. Ivy was at college, and it wasnโ€™t easy for her to come over. Even if she did, there was always the risk of running into Micah, which would just complicate things. It was easier not to tell her for now.

They hadnโ€™t been chatting long when a nurse approached Jamison, gesturing that she needed to speak with him. He gave a quick nod, then told Ivy, โ€œGo on and have dinner. Iโ€™m swamped over here, so I wonโ€™t call again tonight, but if anything comes up, let me know right away.โ€

โ€œAlright, talk to you later.โ€

Once the call ended, Jamison headed back toward the emergency department. Micah, whoโ€™d overheard Jamison say Ivyโ€™s name, immediately sidled up with an eager expression. โ€œWas that Ivy on the phone? Is she coming to the hospital?โ€

Jamisonโ€™s face darkened in an instant. He fixed Micah with a cold, razor-sharp glare and spoke in a voice tight with warning, โ€œMicah, donโ€™t make me lose my temper again.โ€

โ€œBut, Uncle, I justโ€ฆโ€

Micah tried to defend himself, but Carla stormed over, grabbed him by the arm, and snapped, โ€œYouโ€™re hopeless! Ivy has nothing to do with you anymore. When are you going to let this go?โ€

โ€œMom, I just wantโ€ฆโ€ Micah tried to protest, but before he could finish, Farley rushed over and started dragging his son away, furious. โ€œYouโ€™re a disgrace! Get out of here!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not leaving! I want to stay with Grandma. I made this messโ€“Iโ€™ll take responsibility!โ€ Micah struggled to break free, stubbornly refusing to leave.

Carla saw right through him. โ€œDonโ€™t use your grandmother as an excuse! You think I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re really after? Youโ€™re just hoping Ivy will show up so you can see her!โ€

โ€œFine! Yes, I want to see Ivy! Iโ€™m not breaking the law!โ€

Carla had reached her limit. She yanked Micah by the ear and scolded him harshly, โ€œGet out! Go home! If you donโ€™t listen, Iโ€™ll do just what your uncle said and ship you off overseas to fend for yourself!โ€

With both parents yelling and dragging him away, Micah had no choice but to go. Mr. and Mrs. Thad stood nearby, quietly watching the spectacle. When the family finally left, they just shook their heads and sighed, too exhausted to even comment.

On her first night back at campus, Ivy barely slept. If sheโ€™d done her math right, it was about time for her period. But maybe because of the new meds, the usual stabbing pain hadnโ€™t hit early this month. She got up before sunrise, slipped on her headphones, and went out for a morning runโ€“a habit sheโ€™d picked up as a student. Doing it again made her feel like sheโ€™d stepped back in time. But halfway through, the cramping in her lower back and stomach got worse. Remembering that Jamison was back at work, Ivy didnโ€™t want to bother him by asking for help. Instead, she ducked into a pharmacy for some painkillers and headed back to her dorm. Her roommates were out, so the place was blissfully quiet. She took her pills and climbed into bed, meaning to rest a bit. But just as she closed her eyes, her phone rang. The caller ID flashed Boydโ€™s name.

That perked her up. She answered, โ€œHey, Boyd.โ€

โ€œAll done with what you asked,โ€ Boyd said. โ€œToday, the agent will have a face-to-face with The Windsor Group. As soon as the acquisition offer lands and the news is out, their stock price will tankโ€“you can keep buying in. Meanwhile, the agentโ€™s negotiating with top management to buy out their shares at above-market price. Iโ€™d bet within five trading days, youโ€™ll be the majority shareholder.โ€

Ivy was genuinely surprised; she hadnโ€™t expected Boyd to move this fast. Heโ€™d managed to cut through all the red tape in just a few days.

โ€œThatโ€™s fantastic, thank you.โ€ Ivy felt a surge of relief and happiness. Even the pain seemed to ease.

Boyd chuckled. โ€œNo problem. Happy to help.โ€

โ€œStill, I owe you,โ€ she said, then remembered she hadnโ€™t heard from Jamison all day. โ€œBy the way, are you with Jamison right now?โ€

โ€œNo, I dropped him off at the hospital yesterday and havenโ€™t seen him since. Heโ€™s probably swampedโ€“his grandmother was admitted, so heโ€™s got his hands full.โ€

Ivy sat up, startled. โ€œWho was admitted?โ€

โ€œHis grandmother,โ€ Boyd replied, sounding surprised. โ€œYou didnโ€™t know? Yesterday, after the mess with Micah at Miss Emmaโ€™s engagement party, she got so upset she had a heart attack. They had to rush her in for emergency treatment. I figured Jamison would have told you right away.โ€

Ivy was stunned. Thinking back to her call with Jamison the previous evening, it all made sense now.

So Adela Ludwig had already been in the hospital then.

โ€œWhat did Micah do this time?โ€ Ivy asked, her distaste for her ex rising up again.

Boyd hesitated. โ€œApparently, Micah caused a huge scene at Miss Emmaโ€™s engagement party. Someone filmed it and posted it onlineโ€“itโ€™s gotten a lot of attention. Mr. Shepherd was furious and tried to beat him up. Micah hid at the family estate, so Mr. Shepherd chased him there. In the commotion, Jamisonโ€™s grandmother tried to protect her grandson, and the stress triggered her heart attackโ€ฆโ€
