โHowโs Mom doing?โ
โShe just got to the ER. Theyโre still running tests.โ Jamisonโs face was dark with worry.
Thad turned to his nephew, stern as ever. โMicah, what did you do this time? Your grandparents are getting old โ does that not register with you? If you get yourself into trouble, why canโt you deal with it yourself? Why run to their house?โ
Micah still carried the bruises from a recent beating โ his face mottled, his expression pitiful and worn.
Now, with both uncles grilling him and his grandmotherโs condition unknown, panic finally edged into his voice. After some stammering, he admitted, โDad was about to hit me againโฆ I was scared to go home, so I went to visit Grandpa and Grandma. But Dad tracked me down there. Grandma tried to stop him, got anxious, and thenโฆโ
โYouโโ Thad ground his teeth, pointing at Micah, his voice raw with disappointment. โYouโre the only son left in the Shepherd family. Youโre in your mid-twenties and still have no sense of responsibility! All you do is cause troubleโwhen are you going to grow up? When will you actually help your father instead of making things worse?โ
Strictly speaking, it wasnโt really Thadโs place to lecture Micah โ his father was present, after all.
But since it was Adela Ludwig whoโd been dragged into this mess, neither Thadโs harsh words nor his anger drew any protest from Farley.
If anything, Farley was even more ashamed of the useless son heโd raised.
But as Thadโs tirade dragged on, Carla couldnโt take it anymore. She stepped in, trying to defend her son.
Their voices echoed down the hospital corridor, overlapping into a mess of argument.
Jamison had no patience for any of it. Spotting a colleague waving from the ER doors, he excused himself and hurried over.
A few minutes later, Jamison returned.
Everyone immediately crowded around. โHowโs Mom?โ
Chapter 444
โLuckily, she got here in time. Sheโs not in any immediate danger,โ Jamison said, his voice low and sharp, eyes fixed squarely on Micah. โBut the heart attack was serious. Theyโll monitor her overnight. If things donโt improve, sheโll need bypass surgery.โ
The room felt heavy, Jamisonโs gaze pinning Micah in place. Micah shrank under the pressure, staring at his shoes in silence.
Thadโs worry broke through. โSheโs not young anymore. Isnโt surgery risky at her age?โ
โIt is. Thatโs why theyโre trying conservative treatment first. But if it doesnโt work, thereโs no choice but to operate.โ
Before Jamison finished, his phone buzzed.
He glanced down โ Dad. The old man must be worried sick at home. Jamison quickly answered and did his best to calm him.
Once heโd hung up, he looked back at the family. โMom has to stay in the hospital. Iโll stay with her tonight. You all should go home.โ
Carlaโs voice was small. โMaybe I should stay. She needs careful attention.โ
โNo need.โ Jamison shut her down immediately.
โJamison, Iโโ
He cut her off, not even letting her finish. โYou donโt need to worry about Mom. What you should be thinking about is what to do with Micah. Honestly, I think sending him abroad would be best. Let him study, or fend for himself โ either way, itโs better than having him around causing trouble.โ
Jamisonโs sharp tongue was in full display.
Farleyโs face darkened, but after what had just happenedโhis son nearly sending his mother-in-law to the hospitalโhe couldnโt argue.
But Micah protested at once. โIโm not going abroad! Whatโs so great about going abroad? Youโre just mad about Ivyโyou never liked me, and now you finally have an excuse to get rid of me!โ
Jamison shot him a withering look. โIf I wanted you gone, I wouldnโt need an excuse.โ
His phone rang again. He glanced down โ it was Ivy, probably just leaving the library and looking for him.
โThink about it,โ Jamison said coldly, turning to leave. โHeโs an adult. You canโt expect the whole family to clean up after him forever.โ He walked off, answering the call. โHey, Ivyโฆโ
