Listen to this chapter:

โ€œHowโ€™s Mom doing?โ€

โ€œShe just got to the ER. Theyโ€™re still running tests.โ€ Jamisonโ€™s face was dark with worry.

Thad turned to his nephew, stern as ever. โ€œMicah, what did you do this time? Your grandparents are getting old โ€“ does that not register with you? If you get yourself into trouble, why canโ€™t you deal with it yourself? Why run to their house?โ€

Micah still carried the bruises from a recent beating โ€“ his face mottled, his expression pitiful and worn.

Now, with both uncles grilling him and his grandmotherโ€™s condition unknown, panic finally edged into his voice. After some stammering, he admitted, โ€œDad was about to hit me againโ€ฆ I was scared to go home, so I went to visit Grandpa and Grandma. But Dad tracked me down there. Grandma tried to stop him, got anxious, and thenโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYouโ€“โ€ Thad ground his teeth, pointing at Micah, his voice raw with disappointment. โ€œYouโ€™re the only son left in the Shepherd family. Youโ€™re in your mid-twenties and still have no sense of responsibility! All you do is cause troubleโ€“when are you going to grow up? When will you actually help your father instead of making things worse?โ€

Strictly speaking, it wasnโ€™t really Thadโ€™s place to lecture Micah โ€“ his father was present, after all.

But since it was Adela Ludwig whoโ€™d been dragged into this mess, neither Thadโ€™s harsh words nor his anger drew any protest from Farley.

If anything, Farley was even more ashamed of the useless son heโ€™d raised.

But as Thadโ€™s tirade dragged on, Carla couldnโ€™t take it anymore. She stepped in, trying to defend her son.

Their voices echoed down the hospital corridor, overlapping into a mess of argument.

Jamison had no patience for any of it. Spotting a colleague waving from the ER doors, he excused himself and hurried over.

A few minutes later, Jamison returned.

Everyone immediately crowded around. โ€œHowโ€™s Mom?โ€

โ€œLuckily, she got here in time. Sheโ€™s not in any immediate danger,โ€ Jamison said, his voice low and sharp, eyes fixed squarely on Micah. โ€œBut the heart attack was serious. Theyโ€™ll monitor her overnight. If things donโ€™t improve, sheโ€™ll need bypass surgery.โ€

The room felt heavy, Jamisonโ€™s gaze pinning Micah in place. Micah shrank under the pressure, staring at his shoes in silence.

Thadโ€™s worry broke through. โ€œSheโ€™s not young anymore. Isnโ€™t surgery risky at her age?โ€

โ€œIt is. Thatโ€™s why theyโ€™re trying conservative treatment first. But if it doesnโ€™t work, thereโ€™s no choice but to operate.โ€

Before Jamison finished, his phone buzzed.

He glanced down โ€“ Dad. The old man must be worried sick at home. Jamison quickly answered and did his best to calm him.

Once heโ€™d hung up, he looked back at the family. โ€œMom has to stay in the hospital. Iโ€™ll stay with her tonight. You all should go home.โ€

Carlaโ€™s voice was small. โ€œMaybe I should stay. She needs careful attention.โ€

โ€œNo need.โ€ Jamison shut her down immediately.

โ€œJamison, Iโ€“โ€

He cut her off, not even letting her finish. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about Mom. What you should be thinking about is what to do with Micah. Honestly, I think sending him abroad would be best. Let him study, or fend for himself โ€“ either way, itโ€™s better than having him around causing trouble.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s sharp tongue was in full display.

Farleyโ€™s face darkened, but after what had just happenedโ€“his son nearly sending his mother-in-law to the hospitalโ€“he couldnโ€™t argue.

But Micah protested at once. โ€œIโ€™m not going abroad! Whatโ€™s so great about going abroad? Youโ€™re just mad about Ivyโ€“you never liked me, and now you finally have an excuse to get rid of me!โ€

Jamison shot him a withering look. โ€œIf I wanted you gone, I wouldnโ€™t need an excuse.โ€

His phone rang again. He glanced down โ€“ it was Ivy, probably just leaving the library and looking for him.

โ€œThink about it,โ€ Jamison said coldly, turning to leave. โ€œHeโ€™s an adult. You canโ€™t expect the whole family to clean up after him forever.โ€ He walked off, answering the call. โ€œHey, Ivyโ€ฆโ€
