Listen to this chapter:

Ivy gazed into his deep, thoughtful eyes, warmth flooding through her chest.

In an age as restless and superficial as this, even the love stories on college campuses had lost their innocence. Yet here was this man, almost thirty, yearning for simple, unadulterated love. Was he hopelessly naรฏve, or just a hopeless romantic?

Noticing her staring in a daze and falling silent, Jamison grinned and reached over to brush her cheek. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Still worried someoneโ€™s going to come and split us up?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not thatโ€ฆโ€ Ivy shook her head, but she didnโ€™t brush his hand away. Then, suddenly curious, she asked, โ€œWho was your first love? Are you two still in touch?โ€

The smile on Jamisonโ€™s face froze in place.

His reaction made it obviousโ€“whatever happened with his first love, it wasnโ€™t a happy memory.

โ€œUhโ€ฆ you donโ€™t have to answer if itโ€™s a sore spot. I was just asking.โ€

Ivy hadnโ€™t expected a man so earnest about love to be so inexperienced, so she couldnโ€™t help being curious.

โ€œItโ€™s not that I mind talking about it. I never had a first love, butโ€ฆ I have loved someone before.โ€ And heโ€™d loved deeply, more than words could say.

No first love, but heโ€™d been in love? Ivyโ€™s eyes widened, โ€œSo you had a crush on someone? Waitโ€“are you telling me youโ€™ve never really dated?โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a crush.โ€

โ€œThenโ€ฆโ€ Ivy could practically taste the gossip, but looking at Jamisonโ€™s expression, she didnโ€™t have the heart to push.

Clearly, heโ€™d been hurt before.

No wonder heโ€™d stayed single all these years, despite his looks and background, even subject to his familyโ€™s relentless matchmaking.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Still, for a man like Jamisonโ€“wealthy, charming, from one of the old familiesโ€“who could possibly have turned him down? Ivyโ€™s curiosity only deepened.

โ€œForget it, I wonโ€™t dig up old wounds. You should eatโ€“itโ€™s getting late,โ€ she said, hesitating before changing the subject.

Jamison glanced at the wall clock. Ten oโ€™clock.

โ€œI just saw the newsโ€“a bunch of main roads in the city flooded tonight. No way to get through, so-โ€ He trailed off deliberately, looking at Ivy.

When she met his gaze, realization flickered in her eyes, and he finished, โ€œIโ€™m not going home tonight.โ€

As he spoke, he looked around the room, lips quirking up. โ€œI never spent a single night here when the place was in my name. Funny how it took changing hands for me to finally stay over. Fate has a sense of humor, huh?โ€

Ivy frowned and didnโ€™t bother to hide her annoyance. โ€œDid I say you could stay? Why do you always just decide things on your own?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just talking it over with you, arenโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m saying no.โ€

With her roommate out of town, the idea of being alone with him overnightโ€“just the two of themโ€“made her uneasy. Who knew what he was thinking?

โ€œAnd why not? Youโ€™re not feeling well, Ms. Lesterโ€™s away on business, and youโ€™re here by yourself. Donโ€™t you think it would be safer if I stayed? Besides, with the flooding, the roads really are impassable.โ€

Ivyโ€™s cheeks flushed bright red. โ€œIโ€™m fine now, I donโ€™t need anyone to look after me. And if you canโ€™t get home, there are plenty of hotels in this city.โ€

Theyโ€™d only just started dating. Sharing a house already? What would people think? A woman has to have boundariesโ€“that was her rule.

Jamison bent down, coming close to her blushing face. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a spare room, so why would I book a hotel? Orโ€ฆ are you worried Iโ€™ll want to share your bed again, like earlier?โ€

Ivy fell silent. That had been exactly her worry.

Seeing her speechless, Jamisonโ€™s grin only widened. โ€œYouโ€™re still recoveringโ€“why would I make things harder for myself?โ€

โ€œWatch what youโ€™re saying!โ€ Ivy spluttered, her face flaming. Her embarrassment quickly turned to indignation. โ€œSo you mean, if I wasnโ€™t recovering, you would-โ€

โ€œI would what?โ€

โ€œJamison!โ€ Ivy was mortified and furious, her bright eyes flashing like an angry kitten. โ€œIf you keep this up, Iโ€™ll throw you out.โ€

โ€œTsk tsk, I nurse you back to health and feed you, and now youโ€™re ready to kick me to the curb.โ€

Ivy ignored him, just as her phone chimedโ€“Katrina was video calling. Not wanting her roommate to know Jamison was here, Ivy hurried upstairs with her phone.

Katrina checked in, complained about how miserable her business trip was, and described all the bizarre people sheโ€™d met. At the end, she added, โ€œOh, I wonโ€™t be back till next week.โ€

โ€œIvy, make sure youโ€™re eating properly, okay? If you get stuck, just go out for dinner with Dr. Ludwigโ€“donโ€™t go starving yourself.โ€

โ€œI know, Iโ€™ll take care of myself,โ€ Ivy replied, feeling genuinely warmed by her friendโ€™s concern.

Just as the call was about to end, Katrina suddenly remembered, โ€œOh! By the way, I saw on social media that Neo Havenโ€™s been hit by a huge storm the last two days. Lots of floodingโ€“be careful if you go out.โ€

Ivy froze, recalling what Jamison had said earlier.

After hanging up, she searched the news online. Sure enough, stories about the torrential rain and flooding in Neo Haven were everywhere.

Cars stranded, rescue workers out in force.

One photo showed a family sitting on top of their car, floodwaters up to the hood.

Gripping her phone, Ivy hurried downstairs, scanning the living room for Jamison.

He was nowhere in sight. Had he left already?

Just then, she heard the front door unlocking.

She rushed over, looking toward the entryway, the question tumbling out before she could stop herself: โ€œAre you leaving?โ€

Her voice was urgentโ€“so urgent, she didnโ€™t even realize it herself.
