Chapter 535
Benedict waved dismissively, weary of the argument. He tossed the cross necklace Alicia had given him onto the table. Alicia was startled. Hadn't she given it to Ciara? "My mother doesn't need cheap trinkets for protection," he stated flatly. "If you truly want to marry Caden, you must abandon these... thoughts. I don't expect you to honor the Ward family, but at least don't disgrace us."
Alicia's throat tightened. "I gave him that necklace sincerely."
"Everyone claims sincerity," Benedict countered. "Does it hold any real weight?"
"Alicia, I'm being patient, willing to discuss this. But if you don't take this seriously, I can't promise I won't resort to stronger measures."
Alicia's anger flared. "May I ask something? Was your marriage a business arrangement as well?"
Benedict bristled with pride. "My wife never caused the trouble you do."
"Then I pity her," Alicia retorted. "Dealing with a husband like you requires remarkable patience. You lack sincerity and basic decency."
Benedict's face darkened. His authority felt challenged, igniting his fury. "Alicia, do you understand who you're speaking to?"
Alicia stood, composed. "Do you dare bring that up? I believed you supported Caden, but you're obstructing him. Frankly, if you can't handle the Moss family, you're a useless uncle. I feel sorry for Caden."
Benedict's fists clenched, his temper raging, but he wouldn't strike a woman. Instead, he smashed a porcelain cup on the floor, the shards scattering. Alicia paled but stood firm.
"With your sharp tongue and cold demeanor, it's no surprise things fell apart when you entered Caden's life," Benedict sneered. "As long as I live, you'll never be part of this family."
Alicia remained impassive. "Your approval means nothing to me." Ignoring her vibrating phone, she stepped over the debris, escaping the suffocating tension.
Blake rushed in, witnessing the shattered cup and Benedict's furious expression. He saw Alicia leaving and understood. Though anger simmered, he said nothing to Benedict, instead following Alicia. Benedict narrowed his eyes at Blake's cold glance. Watching Blake go, Benedict smiled bitterly, pitying Caden.
Outside, rain began to fall. Alicia paused, remembering she'd arrived with Blake, and retrieved her phone to call for a ride. Raindrops speckled the screen as she dialed. Blake hurried to her side, noticing her lack of shelter. He quickly removed his jacket, holding it over her head to shield her from the rain.
