As they entered the hall, Caden saw Alicia laughing with a group of young people near the dining table. Their eyes met briefly. Alicia quickly composed herself, maintaining a polite smile. Caden, equally composed, gave his jacket to an attendant. A prominent brown scar on his partially exposed arm caught Alicia's attention. She froze, momentarily stunned by the flash of the scar. As Caden lowered his sleeve, he resumed his conversation with Cliff and walked away. A heavy feeling settled in Alicia's chest. It was a burn mark, undeniably from Sheila's acid. He had assured her he was fine, but having used his arm to shield himself—how could he truly be?

"Ms. Bennett," a voice interrupted her thoughts. She looked up. "Mrs. Hopkins," she greeted with a smile.

Madison Hopkins, Gerry's mother, who was fond of Alicia, replied warmly, "Most of our guests are family and friends, so you may not know many. You seem comfortable with Gerry and the others; why not join their table?"

Alicia nodded. Sitting among familiar faces would be more comfortable. Madison, smiling, guided her to the table while Gerry pulled out a chair, saying, "This way, Alicia." To Alicia's surprise, Madison seated her beside Cliff.

"Cliff, please look after Ms. Bennett. It's her first time here," Madison instructed.

Cliff's eyes widened. He understood Madison's intent and protested, "Mom, this isn't right." Madison glared at him. Gerry chimed in, "Why does Alicia have to sit with him? She doesn't know Cliff, but she's comfortable with me." Madison playfully nudged him. "Just eat your food!" She then smiled at Alicia before attending to other guests.

A wave of discomfort washed over Alicia. She knew Cliff was under pressure to settle down, but she hadn't anticipated Madison seeing her as a potential match. What should she do? Stay or leave?
