Chapter 69

Evelyn woke up feeling limp and weak. As soon as she moved a little, she heard Riona exclaim next to her, “You’re awake! Are you still feeling unwell?”

Evelyn turned to her and asked, “Why are you…?”

Flora helped Evelyn sit up in bed and replied, “My brother and I brought you to the hospital. He’s gone to print your medical report for you. We were worried that you were unwell, so we had them do a thorough check-up on you.”

“Which is…” Evelyn’s expression changed slightly. She pulled the covers away and got out of bed.

Finna froze for a moment before she replied, “He’s on this floor.”

Eren, no longer concerned with her discomfort, rushed out of the ward frantically, heading straight for the printing area.

Sure enough, she saw him there. The report was coming out of the printer.

Evelyn ran over and grabbed the report, holding it tightly in her hands.

Jason was shocked. “You’re awake? Why did you come here?”

Evelyn’s heart was still pounding, and her lips were pursed. “Where’s my ID?” she asked.

Seeing her icy gaze, Jason hesitated for a few seconds before handing her the ID. “I’m sorry. It was an emergency, so I went through your purse without your permission.”

Evelyn noticed nothing unusual about Jason. He probably hadn’t noticed the problem in her report. It was only then that Evelyn let out a sigh of relief.

She could not, and would not, gamble with this. If Jason found out about her condition, she wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret from Lucas. If that happened, a detrimental effect would be set in motion, and she wouldn’t be able to bear the consequences.

If Lucas found out the truth, he certainly wouldn’t spare her any decency. He might go to Leonard and Deborah and use Evelyn’s terminal illness as an excuse to ask for a divorce. Evelyn couldn’t bear to end up like that.

“Thank you,” said Evelyn. She was someone who knew right from wrong. “How much are the medical expenses? I’ll transfer the money to you.”

Jason noticed she was being aloof. Pursing his lips, he replied, “No need. It’s not much. You still don’t look too well. Since the report is out, do you want to ask the doctor about it?”

“It’s just a fever. It’s no big deal,” Evelyn declined.

Jason looked at her with a complicated expression and said, “But you said you were in pain when you were unconscious.”

Evelyn was thin and weak. When she was unconscious, she couldn’t help but curl up in a ball to protect herself and mutter under her breath. How much pain did she have to be in to act like that?

Evelyn didn’t explain. She simply said indifferently, “Thank you for today. I think it’s better to just calculate the expenses; just text me the amount when you have it.”

Jason could tell what she meant. She didn’t wish to have anything to do with him.

“Alright. Since you’re feeling better, let me take you home. It’s getting late,” Jason suggested.

Evelyn looked at him calmly and said, “No need for the trouble. I’ll just get a cab.”

Seeing how she was drawing boundaries with him so indifferently, Jason pursed his lips. He suddenly felt defeated for some reason.

“Alright. Have a safe journey home.” He didn’t insist any further.

Then, Lyelyn boarded a good taxi and left. Fortunately, it was just a false alarm. She wouldn’t have known how to handle it otherwise.

Jared watched Evelyn’s back as she left.

Fiona poked his arm and said, “Something’s up with you, Jason. Do you have a crush on Evelyn?”

Jason frowned subconsciously. He ruffled his hair and said, “What does a kid like you know? Don’t talk nonsense. She won’t be happy with it.”

Fiona let out a heavy sigh. “You’re right. It’s clear that she doesn’t like you at all.”

Immediately after that, he saw that Evelyn had transferred the money to him. She paid him a little more. She didn’t wish to owe him any favors at all.

Evelyn seemed to be quite unwell. He had noticed it the last time, and he noticed it again this time, wondering if Lucas knew about it. Evelyn had a sleepless night. She was not in a very good condition when she woke up the following day.
