Chapter 76
Christopher picked up the documents, but couldn't focus. He placed his phone centrally on his desk to ensure he wouldn't miss calls. However, over the next hour, only calls from subordinates arrived—not the one he awaited.
Meanwhile, that afternoon, Melody and Heidi shopped at a cosmetics department, purchasing makeup, perfumes, handbags, and jewelry. Afterward, they enjoyed fondue together. Melody's phone vibrated; she glanced at it then turned it face down.
"Why aren't you answering? Who's calling?" Heidi asked.
"Telemarketer," Melody replied with a gentle smile.
It was a call from the Fuller residence's landline at 2:00 p.m. Knowing few people had her new number, she guessed the caller and chose not to answer. It would be easy for the Fullers to trace her.
As expected, a message followed, stating Daniel wanted to speak with her. What was there to discuss? The original divorce papers likely reached Daniel, and he knew how to proceed. The two-year agreement had expired, and she wasn't in breach of it.
At that moment, at the Fuller residence:
"Mr. Fuller Senior, Mrs. Fuller hasn't answered," Larry reported.
Daniel sighed. "She no longer uses her original number. It's as if she's severed all ties." He asked, "Has Christopher called?"
"No," Larry replied.
"He's rekindling things with that woman again, isn't he?" Daniel asked coldly.
Larry hesitated. Christopher had instructed him not to discuss such matters with Daniel.
"Hmph! There's nothing to hide from me. Last time, he could explain it as goodwill, but how does he explain giving her a go-million-dollar necklace this time?" Daniel said gruffly. "What an ill-fated relationship. How could he not treasure a good woman like Melody yet cherish someone like Cynthia?"
Last time, they hadn't discussed the divorce agreement, but this time, Melody had returned the signed papers—Christopher's signature was on them. He likely already wanted the divorce and didn't bother calling back.
"Transfer fifty million dollars to her account. Consider it compensation for two years of caring for Christopher. She really left with nothing. What a foolish child," Daniel sighed.
Larry began the transfer.
Meanwhile, in the Fuller Group president's office, Christopher checked the time. It was 6:00 p.m. He finished his paperwork and grabbed his jacket. A knock came, and Sheldon entered with a proposal and contracts needing Christopher's attention.
"Mr. Fuller, these are the documents you need to renew tonight," Sheldon began, but trailed off seeing Christopher ready to leave.
"Let's leave it for tomorrow," Christopher said, departing without further words.
Sheldon was speechless.
Taking the elevator to the underground garage, Christopher drove off, instinctively heading toward the hospital. He was lost in thought. Snapping out of it, he realized he'd arrived at the hospital where Melody was. He looked up at the large "Pinevale Hospital" sign. It was only 0.8 miles from his home.
