Chapter 75
Amid Christopher’s inner turmoil, his anger erupted as he wiped away the coffee stain with a cold expression. “Melody has really learned a thing or two,” he muttered disdainfully. “Four days of this attitude. Has she forgotten her last name?”
“With that temper, she would have been kicked out of any other family by now. She has no background, yet she doesn’t even know how to maintain her position as Mrs. Fuller. What’s the point of having a mouth if she can’t speak properly? She’s the one who messed up, yet makes it seem like the world owes her.”
Sheldon watched Christopher grumble and sighed, looking up at the ceiling. Actions spoke louder than words; this perfectly described Christopher. His words were bitter and resentful toward Melody, yet he had desperately tried to reach her just hours before. After a nap, he acted as if he’d forgotten everything.
“Mr. Fuller, now that you’re awake, please finish reviewing and signing the documents you missed this morning. You have no other plans for the afternoon, so you can leave on time,” Sheldon said.
Christopher tossed the wet napkin aside. “Report tomorrow’s schedule to me. I’ll work overtime tonight.”
What was the point of going home early? To sit alone in an empty house? Cynthia had been coming home late recently, and Melody wasn’t there either. After Cynthia moved out, he would be completely alone every night.
“You used to go in early every day,” Sheldon remarked. “So I’ve been pushing your afternoon meetings to the next day.”
Christopher hesitated. He had been returning home early because Melody had just left the hospital. He could go home and cook and shop with her. But now, no one was home. It felt strange to admit he had intentionally gone home early just to spend time with her. “I said I’m working overtime, so stop asking so many questions,” Christopher said irritably.
Sheldon murmured, “Fine, you’re the boss.” He turned to leave, about to rework Christopher’s schedule, but as he took a few steps, he heard Christopher speak again. “Take some time to visit the hospital later. See when Melody can be discharged.”
Christopher paused, realizing it sounded like he cared, and quickly added in a harsh tone, “And once she’s out, make sure she heads straight home. Hospital fees aren’t cheap, and she’s not working. She’s just spending money.”
Sheldon thought, You spent ninety million dollars on a necklace for that model, but you’re nitpicking about Mrs. Fuller’s hospital bills? He was too tired to comment. Even as a man, he thought Christopher was being a jerk.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Fuller, I’m busy this afternoon. I don’t think I’ll have time to go to the hospital,” he said.
Christopher frowned. “What’s keeping you busy?”
“I have to go to the administration department and handle some coordination in the meeting room. After that, I need to wait for you to sign the documents and get them sent out,” Sheldon explained.
“You can’t find any time at all? I’m not counting it as absenteeism. Your perfect attendance award won’t be affected,” Christopher replied.
Sheldon gave him a resentful look. “You already deducted my perfect attendance award for this month.”
Christopher had forgotten entirely. “Go to the hospital yourself since you have time after work tonight,” Sheldon added.
As he reached the door, he turned back. “Mr. Fuller, I suggest you face your own feelings and don’t regret them later.”
Christopher stared at the door, lost in thought. Face his feelings? What did that mean? When had he not been facing them? Regret? What would he regret? It was laughable. He never regretted anything he did.
