Chapter 451 The Road to Truth

Sure enough, when lunchtime rolled around, White made a beeline for Sierra and opened with:

โ€œWere you watching me earlier? How about it? Impressed?โ€

Sierra wasnโ€™t sure if all foreigners were like this, but White was definitely too much for her to handle. She gave a small cough and said, โ€œI just didnโ€™t expect you to actually know what you were doing.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s so surprising about that?โ€ White shrugged. โ€œIโ€™m investing in this stuff now. Of course, I need to understand it. Otherwise, what if I get scammed?โ€

Sierra thought maybe he wasnโ€™t as unreliable as he looked.

โ€œAnd besides, itโ€™s not hard,โ€ White added. โ€œI picked it up in six months. You know that thing?โ€ He mentioned a name. Sierra nodded, and he grinned smugly. โ€œI developed that entirely on my own.โ€

Freak.

That was Sierraโ€™s first thought. Sure, plenty of people called her a freak too, but still, White gave her that exact feeling.

โ€œYou study every field you invest in?โ€

โ€œYeah!โ€ White nodded without hesitation. โ€œNone of itโ€™s hard.โ€

Sierra was completely at a loss for words now. No wonder people said White was insufferable. Honestly, if she were a little more average, sheโ€™d probably want to punch him herself.

Johnathan had mentioned that this guy had invested in hundreds of projects across industries like biopharmaceuticals, tech, maritime, and real estateโ€ฆ

And he studied every single one of them before investing?

That was terrifying.

The last person sheโ€™d met who was this terrifying was Johnathan. He also picked up complex subjects with easeโ€”things that seemed impossible to most people were childโ€™s play to him.

Now, sheโ€™d run into someone else like that.

Her gaze grew complicated as she looked at White. He couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œYouโ€™re impressed, huh? Want to give me a chance?โ€

Sierra responded by getting up with her tray and walking away. She pulled out her phone. Johnathan had messaged her earlier to say heโ€™d arrived.

She wondered how he was doing. Had he met his grandfather and uncle? Would he be able to learn the truth from them?

At that moment, Johnathan had already arrived at the address his grandfather had given him. But to his surprise, the door was opened by complete strangersโ€”not his grandfather or uncle.

After talking to them, he learned that they had moved away years ago. All the things heโ€™d been sending every year? Theyโ€™d been forwarded elsewhere.

When he heard that, Johnathan almost laughed from sheer frustration. The old him wouldโ€™ve turned around and left right then.

But the more his grandfather and uncle avoided him, the more curious he became. If they didnโ€™t want anything to do with him, why had they accepted the things he sent?

What exactly were they hiding?

From this family, he found out where his packages had really been going: a tiny, remote town unreachable by plane.

Johnathan rented a car and started driving. It was even colder here than back home. Snow piled thick on the roads, and halfway there, the car broke down.

His temper flared instantly.

That was when Sierra called.

โ€œProfessor Yaeger, howโ€™s it going?โ€

Hearing her voice calmed him down a little.

โ€œHavenโ€™t seen them yet.โ€ He took a breath and explained everything that had happened so far.

Sierra hadnโ€™t expected his grandfather and uncle to be so ruthlessโ€”to go to such lengths to avoid him. Her chest ached at the thought.

โ€œSo what now? Where are you?โ€ she asked.

โ€œOn the way.โ€

Johnathan didnโ€™t mention the breakdown or the snowstorm. Instead, he changed the subject and told her about other things.

Sierra knew what he was doing, so she went along with it, chatting about things on her end.

Just before they hung up, she said quietly, โ€œIf it doesnโ€™t work out, just let it go. Things are good the way they are now.โ€

She didnโ€™t want Johnathan chasing the truth anymore. She was afraid it would only hurt him.

โ€œAlright.โ€

After they ended the call, Johnathan lit a cigarette and waited a little longer. Eventually, the tow truck arrived.

Heโ€™d called in a favor from a local friendโ€”gotten a tow, then another car to drive the rest of the way.

After a long, exhausting journey, he finally reached his grandfatherโ€™s house around midnight. Without caring what time it was, he knocked on the door.

It was a long while before he heard anything.

โ€œWho is it?โ€ came a voice from inside.

Even though it had been years since he last heard it, Johnathan recognized it instantlyโ€”it was his uncle.

He answered calmly, โ€œItโ€™s me. Johnathan.โ€
