Chapter 451 The Road to Truth
Sure enough, when lunchtime rolled around, White made a beeline for Sierra and opened with:
โWere you watching me earlier? How about it? Impressed?โ
Sierra wasnโt sure if all foreigners were like this, but White was definitely too much for her to handle. She gave a small cough and said, โI just didnโt expect you to actually know what you were doing.โ
โWhatโs so surprising about that?โ White shrugged. โIโm investing in this stuff now. Of course, I need to understand it. Otherwise, what if I get scammed?โ
Sierra thought maybe he wasnโt as unreliable as he looked.
โAnd besides, itโs not hard,โ White added. โI picked it up in six months. You know that thing?โ He mentioned a name. Sierra nodded, and he grinned smugly. โI developed that entirely on my own.โ
Freak.
That was Sierraโs first thought. Sure, plenty of people called her a freak too, but still, White gave her that exact feeling.
โYou study every field you invest in?โ
โYeah!โ White nodded without hesitation. โNone of itโs hard.โ
Sierra was completely at a loss for words now. No wonder people said White was insufferable. Honestly, if she were a little more average, sheโd probably want to punch him herself.
Johnathan had mentioned that this guy had invested in hundreds of projects across industries like biopharmaceuticals, tech, maritime, and real estateโฆ
And he studied every single one of them before investing?
That was terrifying.
The last person sheโd met who was this terrifying was Johnathan. He also picked up complex subjects with easeโthings that seemed impossible to most people were childโs play to him.
Now, sheโd run into someone else like that.
Her gaze grew complicated as she looked at White. He couldnโt help but ask, โYouโre impressed, huh? Want to give me a chance?โ
Sierra responded by getting up with her tray and walking away. She pulled out her phone. Johnathan had messaged her earlier to say heโd arrived.
She wondered how he was doing. Had he met his grandfather and uncle? Would he be able to learn the truth from them?
At that moment, Johnathan had already arrived at the address his grandfather had given him. But to his surprise, the door was opened by complete strangersโnot his grandfather or uncle.
After talking to them, he learned that they had moved away years ago. All the things heโd been sending every year? Theyโd been forwarded elsewhere.
When he heard that, Johnathan almost laughed from sheer frustration. The old him wouldโve turned around and left right then.
But the more his grandfather and uncle avoided him, the more curious he became. If they didnโt want anything to do with him, why had they accepted the things he sent?
What exactly were they hiding?
From this family, he found out where his packages had really been going: a tiny, remote town unreachable by plane.
Johnathan rented a car and started driving. It was even colder here than back home. Snow piled thick on the roads, and halfway there, the car broke down.
His temper flared instantly.
That was when Sierra called.
โProfessor Yaeger, howโs it going?โ
Hearing her voice calmed him down a little.
โHavenโt seen them yet.โ He took a breath and explained everything that had happened so far.
Sierra hadnโt expected his grandfather and uncle to be so ruthlessโto go to such lengths to avoid him. Her chest ached at the thought.
โSo what now? Where are you?โ she asked.
โOn the way.โ
Johnathan didnโt mention the breakdown or the snowstorm. Instead, he changed the subject and told her about other things.
Sierra knew what he was doing, so she went along with it, chatting about things on her end.
Just before they hung up, she said quietly, โIf it doesnโt work out, just let it go. Things are good the way they are now.โ
She didnโt want Johnathan chasing the truth anymore. She was afraid it would only hurt him.
โAlright.โ
After they ended the call, Johnathan lit a cigarette and waited a little longer. Eventually, the tow truck arrived.
Heโd called in a favor from a local friendโgotten a tow, then another car to drive the rest of the way.
After a long, exhausting journey, he finally reached his grandfatherโs house around midnight. Without caring what time it was, he knocked on the door.
It was a long while before he heard anything.
โWho is it?โ came a voice from inside.
Even though it had been years since he last heard it, Johnathan recognized it instantlyโit was his uncle.
He answered calmly, โItโs me. Johnathan.โ
