Chapter 450 Uncovering the Past
Johnathan couldnโt answer the questionโhe was even more desperate to know than Jose was.
He had already tried digging into their past, but nothing useful had come up. Was it because the person he hired wasnโt reliable, or had someone more powerful buried the truth?
Still, the photo gave him a new idea.
Maybe he should start with their university days.
Even though more than thirty years had passed, surely someone would still remember something about them back then.
With that in mind, Johnathan said, โAsk around, but be subtle. Donโt spook anyone. Iโll look into their time at school.โ
Seeing how composed Johnathan was helped Jose calm down, too.
He nodded. โAlright.โ
He never thought heโd see the day heโd be working with Johnathan.
Once theyโd finished discussing the matter, Johnathan got ready to get out of the car. After all, they werenโt exactly on friendly chatting terms.
Just before stepping out, he glanced back at Jose and said, โItโs not a big deal.โ
Before Jose could react, Johnathan was already out the door. It took a second for it to sink in.
Waitโฆ was his brother trying to comfort him?
Even though he told Jose it wasnโt a big deal, Johnathan himself didnโt feel so calm inside.
He hadnโt kept this from Sierra. Right now, he needed someone elseโs perspective.
Sierra was surprised after hearing everything. But while Johnathan was too caught up in it to see clearly, she had been thinking things through.
โIs it possible your father was with Susie first, and then something happened that forced her to leave? After that, he got together with your mom. Then, Susie came back, and everything else unfolded from there?โ
That would explain the strangely delicate relationship among the three of them. Neither Susie nor Johnathanโs mother had ever shown hatred toward the other.
As for what mightโve happened back thenโฆ no one knew.
Johnathan pressed his lips together and said, โIโm heading overseas in a couple of days.โ
It was time to visit his uncle and grandfather. They had to know something about what happened.
Johnathan was never one to drag his feet. He arranged everything the next day and prepared to leave on the third.
He hesitated for a moment, but in the end, he decided not to bring Sierra.
Technically, he should be taking her to meet his grandfather and uncle. But remembering how cold theyโd been to him after his motherโs death, he dropped the idea.
Still, Sierra packed up a few things for himโstuff elderly people might need.
She knew his temper and reminded him, โTalk things through when youโre there. Donโt lose your temper.โ
โI wonโt.โ
Johnathan said the words, but Sierra wasnโt convinced.
She knew his temperament all too well. On the surface, he seemed calm, but he was petty and held grudges. If he werenโt, he wouldnโt have gone all these years without reaching out to his grandfather.
After sending him off at the airport, Sierra drove straight to the university.
Lately, theyโd started collaborating with White. However, the person whoโd said theyโd be fully involved hadnโt shown up even onceโuntil today. White had finally made a rare appearance.
With Johnathan gone and White suddenly showing up, Sierra couldnโt help but feel suspicious.
But White didnโt leave her guessing for long. As soon as he saw her, he rushed over to complain.
โYouโre seriously still with that Yaeger guy? Iโm telling you, that guyโs no good. And his friends? Even worse.โ
White then spent the next thirty minutes complainingโnot just about Johnathan, but mainly about Mateo.
Apparently, heโd been completely played by Mateo lately. Heโd thought Mateo had skills, but it had all been a scam.
Just thinking about it made White grind his teeth in frustration.
His emotions were so over-the-top. It was hard to imagine someone like him holding so much power.
Sierra had had enough of his ranting. She checked the time and said, โItโs starting.โ
White fell silent and put on his lab coat.
Everyone already knew the focus of this research. Professor Martin was leading it, and each person had a different role.
Sierra had assumed someone as loud as White wouldnโt do well in the lab. But to her surprise, once he stepped inside, he seemed like a different person.
Focusedโeven intense.
Sierra couldnโt help but listen in for a bit, and found he wasnโt just talking out of his ass. He actually understood what was going on. Clearly, heโd done his homework.
Sensing something, White glanced her way. When he saw her watching him, his eyes lit upโand Sierra immediately got a bad feeling.
