Chapter 421 Not So Easy to Break
โHmph.โ
Wayne let out a cold snort, still visibly displeased.
His eldest grandsonโthe future head of the Wynn familyโhad nearly been taken on their own turf. It was disgraceful. If word got out, itโd be a laughingstock.
The Wynn family had kept a low profile for too long. People had started forgetting just how powerful they really were.
Well, it was time to remind them.
Wayne would handle that himself. As for Johnathan, Sierra accompanied him back to the estate.
Chase didnโt go with them. He stopped Johnathan with a serious look and said, โLeave this to me. Iโll find out who was behind it.โ
For once, Johnathan didnโt fire back. He simply looked at Chaseโand that was enough to make the man feel oddly relieved.
He offered a stiff, awkward parting line: โGet some rest. Donโt try to play hero.โ
Then he hurried off, clearly afraid Johnathan might change his mind and start arguing.
Johnathan watched his retreating back, and to everyoneโs surpriseโincluding his ownโhe actually smiled.
A real smile.
The day had been exhausting. Wayne didnโt ask Johnathan for details. Instead, he simply told everyone to rest.
Later that night, when it was just the two of them, Sierra gently hugged Johnathan.
โYou scared me to death today.โ
โYou scared me first,โ Johnathan replied, holding her just as tightly.
Heโd nearly lost it when he saw the red laser sight land on her. That moment had frozen him in terror.
They stayed quiet for a while. Then Sierra finally spoke.
โThey were after you."
โItโs because of the drugs, isnโt it?โ
โMost likely.โ
Johnathan let out a crooked laugh. โI really miscalculated.โ
โThey knew you wouldnโt cooperate if they took someone like you,โ he said. โThey needed someone like me.โ
That phraseโsomeone like meโhit Sierra the wrong way.
She knew exactly what he meant, and she hated it.
โWhat do you mean, someone like you? What kind of person are you? Johnathan, youโve got a soft heart too.โ
Back when their car was tampered with, heโd chosen to risk his own life rather than harm innocent bystanders.
Itโs when youโre staring death in the face that your true character shows.
She was done listening to him put himself down.
Her words caught him off guard, stirring something deep inside. He wanted so badly to pull her close and forget the rest of the worldโbut he knew Sierra wouldnโt allow that tonight. And his body, still healing, wouldnโt handle it either.
That only frustrated him more. Heโd already given the order: the man who had punched him was not to be killed.
Johnathan would handle him personally.
Sierra, drained from the dayโs stress, fell asleep mid-conversation. Watching her peaceful face, Johnathan leaned down and placed a kiss on her cheek.
A wave of cold fear lingered in his chest.
Thank goodness the target had been himโnot her.
Which meant his entire strategy had to change.
He had been cautious before, too afraid to act recklessly for fear of putting Sierra in danger.
But now that he knew he was the true targetโhe didnโt need to hold back.
If they thought he was easy to corner, it was time they saw what he was really capable of.
While Sierra slept, Johnathan forced himself upright into his wheelchair and rolled onto the balcony, where he spent hours making phone calls.
By the time morning came, something had changed.
Maybe it was the cold wind, maybe the drug still lingering in his system, or maybe the strain on his already weakened bodyโbut Sierra woke in a wave of heat.
โSo hotโฆโ
She muttered groggily and opened her eyes. The heat was coming from next to herโJohnathanโs body was burning up.
Instantly alert, she leapt from bed and shouted for the butler.
Doctors arrived almost immediately. When they checked his temperature, it was over 104ยฐF (40ยฐC).
They didnโt dare waste time. A fever-reducing injection came first, followed by a full medical examination.
The commotion brought Wayne storming in.
โWhat happened? He was fine last night! How did he suddenly spike a fever?โ
He directed the question at Sierra.
Sierra shook her head. โI donโt know. He was perfectly fine when we fell asleep.โ
Wayne frowned deeply but didnโt press further. Heโd already committed to Johnathan recovering at the estate. Their medical team was top-tierโon par with any major hospital.
Soon, the head of the team returned with the results.
โSir, Mr. Simonโs condition isโฆ unusual.โ
He paused.
โWe just completed a full evaluation, and medically speaking, thereโs absolutely nothing wrong with him.โ
