Chapter 392 Calculated Risk

She had heard from Stone and the others that Johnathan was highly vigilant. If someone tampered with his car, most people wouldnโ€™t notice, but Johnathan absolutely wouldโ€”otherwise, he wouldnโ€™t have survived all these years.

Back when he was a mercenary, he stayed alive by being bold and meticulous.

Yesterday, Sierra had been too overwhelmed to think straight. Only now did she remember to ask about it:

โ€œWhen you heard Quinn escaped, you were worried Iโ€™d be in danger. Thatโ€™s why you rushed out and got into the accident, right?โ€

Just thinking about it filled Sierra with guilt.

Johnathan didnโ€™t want her to blame herself. He spoke up. โ€œThat was part of it. But the other reason wasโ€”I was on the phone with a friend.โ€

His mind had been occupied with things from his parentsโ€™ past. If not for that distraction, the accident might not have happened.

โ€œSo donโ€™t blame yourself. And besides, I made that choice.โ€

If he hadnโ€™t swerved to avoid the pedestrians, he wouldnโ€™t have been so badly hurt.

Speaking of it, Johnathan gave a faint smile. โ€œSierra, youโ€™ve really changed me.โ€

When he saw the elderly man and the child crossing the street, he couldnโ€™t help but think of Sierra and her grandmother.

So, in that split second, he chose to swerve, even though he knew he might be severely injuredโ€”or never wake up again.

But in that moment between life and death, he couldnโ€™t bring himself to treat life so indifferently anymore.

Sierra already knew about this. Her smile was tinged with bitterness. โ€œMr. Yaeger, Iโ€™m just an ordinary person.โ€

When she learned Johnathan had been hurt trying to avoid hitting someone, her first thought was: if only he hadnโ€™t swerved.

At the end of the day, she was just human too.

She still valued some lives over others.

Even if it meant living with guilt forever, she couldnโ€™t bear seeing Johnathan hurt.

Hearing the weight behind her words, Johnathan reached up and gently touched her face. โ€œI know that if it were you, youโ€™d have made the same choice. I didnโ€™t want you to look down on me. Besides, I chose the direction that would cause the least damage to myself.โ€

Normally, someone would steer right to minimize the impact on the driverโ€™s side.

But there had been a fuel truck to his right. If heโ€™d hit that, the consequences would have been far worse. So in less than a second, he made the best decision he could.

As they spoke, Maddox and Shen Qingchi arrived with food prepared by the familyโ€™s housekeeper.

Since Johnathan had just undergone surgery, he couldnโ€™t eat solid food yet, so everything was for Sierra.

They had also come to update her on the investigation.

โ€œWe checked the surveillance footage. The person who tampered with your car was a retired race car driver.โ€

He had extensive knowledge of cars and had modified many before, so the sabotage was barely noticeable. On top of that, Johnathan had been distracted yesterday and didnโ€™t catch it in time.

โ€œBut that driver is already dead. We also looked into the two vehicles on either side of yours. Both were making standard deliveries on schedule. Everything seemed normal, and both drivers checked out clean.โ€

Still, it was all too coincidentalโ€”two trucks boxing in Johnathanโ€™s car at just the right moment.

โ€œWe also checked on the older man and the child crossing the street. The granddaughter wasnโ€™t feeling well, and the grandfather was taking her to the doctor. They live nearby.โ€

In short, everything looked like coincidence. But all those coincidences together nearly got Johnathan killed.

Johnathan thought for a moment and said, โ€œIt wasnโ€™t Quinn.โ€

Sierra looked at him in surprise. It wasnโ€™t Quinn?

Maddox nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s what we suspect as well.โ€

โ€œQuinnโ€™s been in custody for days. She wouldnโ€™t have been able to plan something this precise. It mustโ€™ve been whoever helped her escape.โ€

Whoever it was knew Johnathan would worry about Sierra once Quinn got away and had sabotaged the car in advance.

Distracted and on the phone, Johnathan hadnโ€™t noticed anything was off until it was too late.

Everything was methodical and connectedโ€”meticulously planned.

โ€œQuinn must have someone backing her.โ€

Sierra glanced around at the others. โ€œIs it the same group involved with the drugs?โ€

Hearing this, Johnathan immediately looked at her. โ€œHave you noticed anything strange lately?โ€

Sierra shook her head. โ€œNo unfamiliar people have come to the school recently.โ€
