Chapter 387: Blood and Blame
Mateo and the others quickly moved to Sierraโs side, trying to comfort her.
โItโll be okay, Sierra. The best doctors in the countryโand the most advanced equipment in the worldโare in there. Heโll be fine.โ
Sierra couldnโt take it in. All she heard were the words, "Heโll be fine." She pressed her lips together.
โRight. Heโll be fine. He has to be.โ
She fell silent after that, her eyes fixed on the emergency room doors.
Her condition was worrying. The others exchanged uneasy glances, unsure how to console herโtruth be told, they were all scared too.
None of them had ever seen Johnathan this badly hurt before. Rumor had it that when he was brought in, he was covered in blood.
Wayne and Chase had only just arrived, having gotten the news late. Both men wore grim, unspeakable expressions.
โWhat happened exactly?โ Wayne asked.
Heโd rushed over the moment he heard his eldest grandson was injured but hadnโt been told the details.
Maddox stepped forward. โWe checked the surveillance and the vehicle. Someone tampered with Johnathanโs car. The brakes failed. He probably didnโt realize until it was too late. He swerved to avoid hitting pedestrians and crashed.โ
And unfortunately, the car he hit happened to be a large freight truck. Otherwise, given the safety features of Johnathanโs car, his injuries wouldnโt have been this severe.
Wayneโs face turned cold.
He knew what his grandson was capable of. If the car had been tampered with, Johnathan shouldโve noticed. What had distracted him?
And more importantly... he chose to swerve? To crash on purpose just to avoid hitting someone?
When had his cold-blooded grandson become so soft?
But now wasnโt the time for questions. Right now, he just needed Johnathan to make it out alive.
Wayne snapped to attention. โGet more doctors. I want the best in Albanos in that operating roomโnow.โ
โAnd start an investigation. I want to know who had the guts to touch someone from the Wynn family.โ
The room stiffened. Maddox and the others exchanged nervous looks. Wayne didnโt act oftenโbut when he did, it always ended with results. Albanos was about to be turned upside down.
But truthfully, they wanted answers too.
Stone hesitated, then said, โCould it have been Quinn?โ
He didnโt say it lightlyโbut the timing was too suspicious.
Quinn escaped, and now Johnathan was nearly killed.
Sierra hadnโt been paying attention to the conversationโuntil she heard that name.
โQuinn? What does this have to do with her?โ
โShe escaped,โ Stone explained. โFaked a medical episode to get transferred to the hospitalโthen slipped out.โ
Just then, Susie and Jose arrived. Susieโs worry was written all over her face.
โHow is Johnathan?โ she asked Chase.
โHeโs still in surgery.โ
Chaseโs voice was hoarse. He was struggling the most.
Just minutes before the crash, he and Johnathan had been on the phone. And then this.
If anything happened to Johnathan, how could he face Wendy? Before she died, she made him promise again and again to protect their sonโbut heโd failed, over and over.
Pain flickered in Chaseโs eyes.
Susie saw it and gently comforted him. โDonโt worry. Johnathanโs going to be okay.โ
As his parents stood there, lost in their guilt and grief, Jose looked on with undisguised scorn.
At first, when he heard Johnathan was in an accident, heโd actually felt a twinge of concern.
Now, he felt like a fool.
Why should he be worried? Johnathan had a whole army of people to worry for him.
But... was it really Quinn?
That woman was brutal. Heโd thought she might have feelings for Johnathan, but apparently notโshe hadnโt hesitated to take him out.
This collaboration... was turning out to be very satisfying.
If heโd known how dangerous Quinn really was, he wouldโve gotten her out sooner.
Jose was lost in thought when a sharp voice called out.
โJose. Come with me. I have some questions.โ
He turned to find Wayne staring at him with eyes that seemed to see straight through him.
Joseโs stomach dropped.
