Chapter 343: A Burgundy Thread
They had all just taken money to do a job. While listening to them talk, Maddox had already sent someone to investigate. But, as expected, nothing turned up.
Now that the trail had gone cold, Jonathanโs eyes were sharp enough to cut ice. Maddox spoke up. โIโll keep digging.โ This couldnโt just be left here. Besides, that kind of drug wasnโt something a regular person could get their hands on.
To be honest, the first person that came to Maddoxโs mind was Shane. Things between Jonathan and Shane had been tense latelyโso much so that Shane had even been sent away. If anyone had a motive for revenge, it was him.
Jonathan said nothing, just stared at the three. Maddox looked like he wanted to say something, but in this moment, he had no standing. In the end, he kept his mouth shut.
Just then, Jonathanโs phone rang. It was Draven. โSierraโs awake.โ
Those words made Jonathan forget everything else. He turned and headed straight for the hospital room. As he got out of the car, he glanced coldly at the three and said, โI donโt want to see you in Capital City again.โ
โIโll handle it,โ Maddox replied.
Only after Jonathan left did Maddox finally breathe again. He had thought those three were dead for sure. But Jonathan had been more rational than expected. Of course, there was also the possibility he was casting a wider net. Knowing Jonathan, the latter seemed more likely.
Jonathan rushed back to the hospital room. Sure enough, Sierra was fully awake now, and looking much better than before. The moment she saw him, Sierra instinctively reached out. Jonathan hurried over and held her hand tightly.
Quinn followed him. Seeing that Sierra was awake, she looked remorseful. โIโm sorry I came back so late.โ She looked miserable. Sierra shook her head, then asked, โDid you find out who drugged me?โ
Draven hadnโt expected that to be the first thing she asked. โYou should rest. Leave the rest to us.โ
โI want to know.โ
Sierra knew they meant well. They didnโt want her remembering anything unpleasant. But she was the one who had gone through it. She needed to know what had happened.
Jonathan glanced at her, then told her everything the three had confessed. โWe still donโt know who was behind it.โ
Seeing the guilt in his eyes, Sierra gently squeezed his hand. โItโs not your fault. No one couldโve seen this coming. That drug was unusual.โ
Draven quickly added, โThe hospital only ran basic tests. For something more thorough, weโll need someone with real expertise.โ
โGood.โ Sierra paused, then continued, โAfter Quinn left, I heard someone come in. I thought it was Mr. Yaegerโฆ but I realized later it wasnโt. To stay conscious, I bit my wrist. I even hurt him. He was dressed way too well to be a staff member.โ
She dug deeper into her memory. โHe was wearing a burgundy suit.โ
Everyone in the room looked visibly uncomfortable at her wordsโespecially Jonathan. He didnโt want her to relive any of it. But here she was, calmly recounting everything like it didnโt matter. But anyone who had really been through it knew just how painful it mustโve been. And the fact that she could still notice and remember so much in that momentโit wasnโt because she wasnโt afraid. It was because she had been on guard the entire time.
Even Stone hadnโt expected Sierra to have picked up on so many details. He spoke up, โDonโt worry. Weโll find him.โ
A burgundy suitโthat alone would narrow things down.
No one noticed Maddox standing in the doorway. When he heard โburgundy suit,โ his expression changed. If he remembered correctly, his cousin had been wearing one tonight.
Thinking about how reckless his cousin usually was, Maddoxโs eyelid twitched. He didnโt stay at the hospital. Instead, he rushed straight to the Treno family estate. He had already told his people to keep an eye on his cousin while he was on the way.
By the time he arrived, he could hear chaos inside. His face turned to stone, and he kicked the door open. Screams and curses rang out from the room. His cousinโs name was Trev. He was mid-rant, but the moment he saw Maddox, he froze. Then, as if something clicked, guilt flashed across his face.
โMaddoxโฆ what are you doing here?โ
