Chapter 342: No Turning Back
Of course, Maddox had no objections. He knew Johnathan didnโt trust him right now. But Mateo couldnโt help speaking up. โMaddox didnโt want this either. Youโโ
Before he could finish, Johnathan slammed his fist into the wall.
โI said bring them in!โ he growled, every word ice-cold. It was as if he couldnโt feel the pain. His hand was covered in blood.
Quinn let out a small, startled gasp. She looked like she wanted to say something, but Johnathan shot her a cold glare, and she didnโt dare utter a word.
โCalm down, Johnathan!โ
Stone and Draven watched him nervously, afraid he might suddenly lash out at Maddox.
Johnathan didnโt say a word. He turned and pushed the door open, walking back inside.
Draven sighed and turned to Maddox. โYou know how he is. Donโt let it get to you.โ
โHow could I?โ
Maddox shook his head. โThis really was my mistake.โ Whether it was the guests or the staffโthey were all his responsibility. For something like this to happen, he couldnโt shirk the blame. He almost wished Johnathan had hit him. If taking a beating could fix this, he wouldโve welcomed it.
Maddox had already guessed that Johnathan would want to interrogate the three himself, so heโd made arrangements. Less than half an hour later, they were brought to the hospital. This time, Stone was the one who went in to call Johnathan.
โTheyโre here. You want to go see them?โ
Johnathan didnโt move. He just sat there, still keeping watch over Sierra.
Stone frowned. โYou want to do this in the hospital room?โ
โI donโt think Sierra would want that.โ
Finally, Johnathan reacted. He turned to look at Stone, a rare flicker of confusion in his eyes.
โIโm afraid that if I leave, something will happen to her again.โ
Stone had been Johnathanโs brother-in-arms for years, but heโd never seen him like this. His heart sank.
โIf you trust me, Iโll stay here with her.โ
โUnless I die, no one will lay a finger on Sierra.โ
Draven, standing just outside, added, โCount me in. I may not know as much about these drugs as you and Sierra, but I know more than most. If anyone tries to tamper with her meds, they wonโt get away with it.โ
Back in the room, Stone and Draven exchanged a glance. Draven muttered, โSomeone might not leave that room alive tonight.โ
Stone pressed his lips together. โWhat I want to know isโwho was it?โ
Dravenโs expression turned grim. โPlease donโt let it have anything to do with the Wynn family.โ Especially not Jose or Chase. If it didโฆthis could blow up beyond control.
Stoneโs face was serious. He hadnโt told Draven, but he had another fear weighing on him. Maddox had investigated all the guestsโbut he hadnโt looked into the Treno family. If this traced back to themโฆ
Stone didnโt even want to finish that thought.
By then, Johnathan had already come face-to-face with the three suspects. Maddox had arranged for a large, soundproof vehicle, making sure no one outside could hear a thing. Instead of questioning them separately, Johnathan had them all brought in together.
โYou get one chance. Tell the truth, and you might live.โ
The three looked terrified. Finally, the one who had taken Sierraโs glass spoke up. โSomeone paid me to throw away her glass. Thatโs all I know. I swear.โ
Once he spoke, the other two couldnโt hold it in eitherโthey all started talking.
Maddox, listening from the side, felt a chill run down his spine. This wasnโt the work of just one person. All three had been involvedโeach step feeding into the next.
It started with the procurement guy. Heโd taken money to swap out the usual suppliersโnot knowing that the new batch of cake and fruit was laced with drugs. The payment had seemed like a harmless bribe. The quality looked decent, so he agreed.
The second serverโjust like the one who tossed the glassโhad also been paid. His job was to swap the drugged items back out afterward, then dispose of the evidence. That was why Maddox had such a hard time figuring out what had been tampered with. The original tainted batch had been destroyed before it could be tested.
One of them swore that only Sierraโs food had been drugged. If the others had eaten it too, the whole situation wouldโve spiraled out of control.
Now the truth was out. But one thing none of them could sayโwho was behind it all?
