Chapter 319: Buried Wounds
Dora clearly adored Sierra. The moment Sierra asked if she wanted to go to the childrenโs play area downstairs, the little girl agreed without hesitation. Quinn stroked her daughterโs hair gently and said, โGo on, and make sure to listen to Auntie Sierra.โ Dora nodded obediently. Watching her, Sierra felt a pang in her chest. A child this young shouldnโt have to be this well-behaved. She couldnโt tell if it was just Doraโs nature or the result of something sheโd gone through.
Sierra wanted to know more but knew it wasnโt the right time. She gave Johnathan a quick glance before carrying Dora out of the room. Dora clung to her trustingly, her little arms wrapped tightly around Sierraโs neck.
โDora,โ Sierra asked softly, โhow was life when you and your mom lived overseas? Were you happy every day?โ
Dora didnโt speak. Just when Sierra thought she might not answer at all, the child murmured, โI didnโt see Mommy much. She was always busy.โ
Sierraโs heart sank. โThen who took care of you? Your dad? Someone else?โ
Again, silence. This time, Dora didnโt respond at allโnot even after a long wait. Sierra didnโt press her further. She was just a three-year-old, after all. For now, she could only hope Johnathan would get more answers inside.
Inside the hospital room, the silence was heavy. Johnathan waited, but when Quinn stayed quiet, he finally broke the stillness. โWhat? Do I need to beg you to speak?โ
โJohnathanโฆโ Quinnโs voice trembledโequal parts fear and sorrow.
โWhatโs going on?โ he demanded. โTell me everything. Now.โ He was barely holding onto his patience. Still, Quinn said nothing, lips pressed tightly shut.
That pushed Johnathan over the edge. โFine. Donโt say anything. Iโll investigate it myself.โ
Panic flashed across Quinnโs face. โNoโplease, donโt!โ She looked utterly humiliated. โJustโฆ give me some dignity, okay?โ
Johnathan gave a bitter laugh. โDignity? Whatโs more importantโyour pride or your childโs life?โ He didnโt wait for an answer. โDo you even know Doraโs test results are worse than yours?โ
โWhat?โ Quinn looked stunned, clearly unaware.
โYou really didnโt know?โ His gaze turned sharp. โShe never told you she was in pain?โ
Quinnโs lips trembled. After a long pause, she finally said, โActuallyโฆ I only had her for a few months.โ
โI meanโฆ she didnโt come back to me until two months before we returned home.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ Johnathanโs eyes narrowed. โWhat did that man do?โ He zeroed in on the crucial point immediately. But no matter how he pushed, Quinn refused to say more.
That only fueled his frustration. His voice dropped, cold and flat. โFine. Donโt talk. I wonโt ask again.โ
โIf you donโt want help, then Iโm done. I wonโt get involved in anything else.โ He turned on his heel to leaveโbut Quinn lunged forward and grabbed his arm.
โPlease, donโt abandon me,โ she cried, clinging to him desperately.
Johnathan stared at her coldly. โYouโre the one who shut me out.โ
โNo, itโs not like that,โ she said, shaking her head wildly. โI justโฆ I didnโt know how to tell you.โ
โYou and Dora are all I have left. Please donโt walk away.โ Tears streamed down her face as she clung to him, sobbing.
Normally, Johnathan would have pushed her away in a heartbeat. Even though Quinn was like a sister, he hated physical contact. His hand froze midair. Watching her cry so bitterly, he couldnโt bring himself to push her off.
By the time Sierra came back with Dora, Quinn was already asleep. Johnathan sat on the sofa, deep in thought, his expression unreadable. Dora was tired too. Sierra laid her down beside her mother, letting the two sleep together before taking a seat.
โDid she tell you anything?โ she asked. As she spoke, she noticed a dark patch on Johnathanโs sleeveโstained with tears. She looked up at him, but Johnathan didnโt meet her gaze.
โNot much,โ he said, sounding irritable. โShe claims she didnโt know Doraโs condition. Said Dora only came back to her a few months ago.โ
Sierraโs brows furrowed. โThen where was Dora before that? With that man?โ But when she thought of Doraโs silence earlier, she wasnโt so sure. Something didnโt add up.
She was about to say more when Quinn suddenly started thrashing in her sleep. โNo! No! Help me! Help me!โ she cried out, her voice trembling with fear.
Johnathan rushed over and gently shook her. โQuinn. Quinnโwake up.โ Her eyes snapped open, wild with terror. The moment she saw him, she clung to him like a lifeline. โJohnathan, help me! Pleaseโฆ help me!โ
