Chapter 319: Buried Wounds

Dora clearly adored Sierra. The moment Sierra asked if she wanted to go to the childrenโ€™s play area downstairs, the little girl agreed without hesitation. Quinn stroked her daughterโ€™s hair gently and said, โ€œGo on, and make sure to listen to Auntie Sierra.โ€ Dora nodded obediently. Watching her, Sierra felt a pang in her chest. A child this young shouldnโ€™t have to be this well-behaved. She couldnโ€™t tell if it was just Doraโ€™s nature or the result of something sheโ€™d gone through.

Sierra wanted to know more but knew it wasnโ€™t the right time. She gave Johnathan a quick glance before carrying Dora out of the room. Dora clung to her trustingly, her little arms wrapped tightly around Sierraโ€™s neck.

โ€œDora,โ€ Sierra asked softly, โ€œhow was life when you and your mom lived overseas? Were you happy every day?โ€

Dora didnโ€™t speak. Just when Sierra thought she might not answer at all, the child murmured, โ€œI didnโ€™t see Mommy much. She was always busy.โ€

Sierraโ€™s heart sank. โ€œThen who took care of you? Your dad? Someone else?โ€

Again, silence. This time, Dora didnโ€™t respond at allโ€”not even after a long wait. Sierra didnโ€™t press her further. She was just a three-year-old, after all. For now, she could only hope Johnathan would get more answers inside.

Inside the hospital room, the silence was heavy. Johnathan waited, but when Quinn stayed quiet, he finally broke the stillness. โ€œWhat? Do I need to beg you to speak?โ€

โ€œJohnathanโ€ฆโ€ Quinnโ€™s voice trembledโ€”equal parts fear and sorrow.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ he demanded. โ€œTell me everything. Now.โ€ He was barely holding onto his patience. Still, Quinn said nothing, lips pressed tightly shut.

That pushed Johnathan over the edge. โ€œFine. Donโ€™t say anything. Iโ€™ll investigate it myself.โ€

Panic flashed across Quinnโ€™s face. โ€œNoโ€”please, donโ€™t!โ€ She looked utterly humiliated. โ€œJustโ€ฆ give me some dignity, okay?โ€

Johnathan gave a bitter laugh. โ€œDignity? Whatโ€™s more importantโ€”your pride or your childโ€™s life?โ€ He didnโ€™t wait for an answer. โ€œDo you even know Doraโ€™s test results are worse than yours?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Quinn looked stunned, clearly unaware.

โ€œYou really didnโ€™t know?โ€ His gaze turned sharp. โ€œShe never told you she was in pain?โ€

Quinnโ€™s lips trembled. After a long pause, she finally said, โ€œActuallyโ€ฆ I only had her for a few months.โ€

โ€œI meanโ€ฆ she didnโ€™t come back to me until two months before we returned home.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Johnathanโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat did that man do?โ€ He zeroed in on the crucial point immediately. But no matter how he pushed, Quinn refused to say more.

That only fueled his frustration. His voice dropped, cold and flat. โ€œFine. Donโ€™t talk. I wonโ€™t ask again.โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want help, then Iโ€™m done. I wonโ€™t get involved in anything else.โ€ He turned on his heel to leaveโ€”but Quinn lunged forward and grabbed his arm.

โ€œPlease, donโ€™t abandon me,โ€ she cried, clinging to him desperately.

Johnathan stared at her coldly. โ€œYouโ€™re the one who shut me out.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not like that,โ€ she said, shaking her head wildly. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t know how to tell you.โ€

โ€œYou and Dora are all I have left. Please donโ€™t walk away.โ€ Tears streamed down her face as she clung to him, sobbing.

Normally, Johnathan would have pushed her away in a heartbeat. Even though Quinn was like a sister, he hated physical contact. His hand froze midair. Watching her cry so bitterly, he couldnโ€™t bring himself to push her off.

By the time Sierra came back with Dora, Quinn was already asleep. Johnathan sat on the sofa, deep in thought, his expression unreadable. Dora was tired too. Sierra laid her down beside her mother, letting the two sleep together before taking a seat.

โ€œDid she tell you anything?โ€ she asked. As she spoke, she noticed a dark patch on Johnathanโ€™s sleeveโ€”stained with tears. She looked up at him, but Johnathan didnโ€™t meet her gaze.

โ€œNot much,โ€ he said, sounding irritable. โ€œShe claims she didnโ€™t know Doraโ€™s condition. Said Dora only came back to her a few months ago.โ€

Sierraโ€™s brows furrowed. โ€œThen where was Dora before that? With that man?โ€ But when she thought of Doraโ€™s silence earlier, she wasnโ€™t so sure. Something didnโ€™t add up.

She was about to say more when Quinn suddenly started thrashing in her sleep. โ€œNo! No! Help me! Help me!โ€ she cried out, her voice trembling with fear.

Johnathan rushed over and gently shook her. โ€œQuinn. Quinnโ€”wake up.โ€ Her eyes snapped open, wild with terror. The moment she saw him, she clung to him like a lifeline. โ€œJohnathan, help me! Pleaseโ€ฆ help me!โ€
