Chapter 318: Hidden Truths

After hanging up, Sierra waited anxiously for Johnathan. Thankfully, he returned not long afterโ€”but to her surprise, he didnโ€™t come home alone. Her eyes widened when she saw the child in his arms. โ€œDora?โ€

New place, unfamiliar peopleโ€”by the time theyโ€™d gotten Dora calmed and asleep, it was well past midnight.

โ€œThanks for helping,โ€ Johnathan said quietly.

He hadnโ€™t wanted to bring Dora home, but with Quinn in no condition to care for her, and with no other options, there was no way he could leave a three-year-old girl out on her own.

โ€œIโ€™ll call around tomorrowโ€”see if I can find a full-time daycare for her.โ€

Heโ€™d already decided on that on the way back.

Sierra waved it off. That wasnโ€™t what mattered right now. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ she asked.

โ€œQuinnโ€ฆ sheโ€™s in the hospital. She fainted while we were out this afternoon. The test results werenโ€™t good.โ€

He summarized a few key data points.

Sierraโ€™s expression changed immediately. As a researcher herself, she knew exactly what those numbers meant. It wasnโ€™t technically leukemia, but it was dangerously close.

She and Johnathan were clearly thinking the same thing. โ€œWhat about Dora?โ€

โ€œNo idea yet. Iโ€™ll take her in for tests tomorrow.โ€

He sounded tiredโ€”exhausted, even.

Then something clicked. โ€œYou called earlier. What was wrong?โ€ he asked.

Sierra had originally planned to ask about the data Shane showed herโ€”but now clearly wasnโ€™t the right time. She shook her head.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing serious. You said youโ€™d meet up after work, then I didnโ€™t hear anything from you. I just got a little worried.โ€

โ€œSorry,โ€ Johnathan said, pulling her into a hug. โ€œShe fainted so suddenly, and there were a ton of tests to run. Plus someone had to go pick up Dora.โ€

And his phone had been on silent during the meeting. He hadnโ€™t even realized sheโ€™d called.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to apologize,โ€ Sierra said, hugging him back. โ€œNo one wants something like this to happen.โ€

She glanced toward the bedroom. โ€œI just hope Doraโ€™s okay.โ€

A child that youngโ€ฆ if she had a blood disorder tooโ€”it was too awful to think about.

The next morning, Sierra went with Johnathan and Dora to the hospital. Without needing to discuss it, they went straight to the lab for bloodwork before heading to see Quinn.

As she heard youโ€™d be there, she agreed without hesitation. Dora really likes you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mention it. What matters now is that you rest and take care of yourself. Weโ€™ll look after Dora in the meantime.โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t know Quinn well, nor what sheโ€™d gone throughโ€”but knowing she was a divorced mom raising a child on her own stirred some sympathy. And since Johnathan clearly cared about her, Sierra would help however she could.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Quinn whispered, gently stroking Doraโ€™s hair. But there was worry in her eyes.

Sierra had wanted to tell her not to worryโ€”but with those test results, any words of comfort felt hollow. All they could do now was hope Doraโ€™s results came back clean.

The hospital had a long-standing relationship with Johnathan, so the test results came quicklyโ€”sent straight to his phone. Sierra saw his brows draw together the moment he looked. Her stomach dropped.

She quietly pulled him out into the hallway. โ€œThe results are in?โ€

Johnathan nodded and handed her the phone. One glance was enough. Sierraโ€™s face turned pale. She had expected Doraโ€™s numbers might be offโ€”but not this bad. In fact, they were worse than Quinnโ€™s.

โ€œThatโ€™s not possible,โ€ she murmured. Even if Quinn had passed something to Dora during pregnancy, it shouldnโ€™t be this severe.

โ€œQuinn doesnโ€™t know?โ€

It seemed hard to believe. If things were this serious, symptoms shouldโ€™ve shown already. But Quinn had insisted she had no idea.

Johnathanโ€™s face was even darker than hers. If Sierra had figured it out, he definitely hadโ€”and more. Quinn had clearly hidden a lot from him. He didnโ€™t know whyโ€”but this entire situation left a bitter taste in his mouth.

He turned abruptly, ready to march back into the room. Sierra quickly grabbed his arm.

โ€œDoraโ€™s still in there.โ€

She knew his temperโ€”if he exploded now, he wouldnโ€™t care who was watching.

โ€œIโ€™ll take Dora out for a walk. You talk to herโ€”but stay calm, okay?โ€

She was sure there had to be more to the story.

โ€œโ€ฆFine.โ€

Johnathan took a breath, held back his frustration, and walked back into the room with her.
