Chapter 315: Things Left Unsaid
Sierra kissed Jonathan on the cheek before leaving. Before she left, she made a point to stop by Quinnโs office. Quinn was on a video call with Dora and waved her over excitedly.
โDora, look who it is!โ
On the screen, Dora lit up the moment she saw Sierra. โPretty lady!โ she chirped sweetly.
โNo, itโs Ms. Sierra!โ Quinn corrected her gently.
But Dora kept insisting, โPretty lady!โ
Sierra chuckled and waved it off. โLet her say it. Makes me sound younger anyway.โ
Quinn let it go with a smile and stayed on the call with Dora a little longer, chatting gently with her before finally ending the call.
โSheโs really adorable,โ Sierra said, unable to hide her smile. That child was unbelievably well-behaved for a three-year-old. No tantrums, no fussing โ just pure sweetness.
โDaughters are always a little more tenderhearted.โ
Quinn gave Sierra a knowing grin. โSo, when are you and Jonathan planning to have one?โ
Sierra was speechless. A baby? That was way too early. The thought hadnโt even crossed her mind. She and Jonathan hadnโt been together that long. They hadnโt even talked about marriage, let alone children. And clearly, Jonathan felt the same. Theyโd always been careful.
โI donโt have any plans for that right now,โ Sierra replied. At the very least, she didnโt see it happening for another couple of years. She still wanted to go further in life โ she wanted to catch up to Jonathan.
โReally?โ Quinn looked genuinely disappointed. โI thought you two would get married and have kids soon. Heโs always wanted one, you know.โ
Sierra froze. Jonathanโฆ wanted a child? Heโd never once mentioned it. She had no idea.
Seeing the surprise on her face, Quinn blinked. โYou didnโt know? He never told you?โ
Sierra instinctively shook her head. Quinn opened her mouth like she was about to say something else, then quickly stopped herself.
โWell, that was a long time ago. Itโs been years โ he mightโve changed his mind. You know how he is. His thoughts are always evolving.โ
He liked kids? He actually wanted a child of his own? That was news to her.
โWhatโs up with you today?โ Autumn asked, unable to hold back. She noticed that Sierra kept spacing out โ something that almost never happened before.
โYou fight with Mr. Yaeger or something?โ she guessed.
Sierra shook her head. โNo, we didnโt fight.โ She just couldnโt stop thinking about what Quinn said.
โThereโs something Iโm not sure aboutโฆ and I donโt know if I should ask.โ
Autumn gave her a firm pat on the shoulder. โThen ask.โ
โIf Mr. Yaeger loves you that much, what could you possibly not ask?โ
โHow do you know itโs about him?โ Sierra asked, curious.
Autumn rolled her eyes. โCome on. Itโs not that hard to guess. Nine times out of ten, when somethingโs off with you, itโs because of him.โ
Was that true? Sierra thought back. Sure enough, her mood swings lately all seemed to revolve around Jonathan.
โOh, and Mr. Yaegerโฆโ Autumn hesitated for a second before asking, โIs the stuff online true?โ
โYou know โ about him being some bigshot?โ
โI donโt mean just in science. I mean in business too.โ
The online rumors had been everywhere for a while. Of course, Autumn and the others had seen them. Honestly, none of them were shocked. Maybe it was because theyโd always looked up to Jonathan. In their eyes, he could do anything.
But that clash with the Zach family had rocked the world โ so many ordinary people had suffered. The stock market went wild. Countless people lost their jobs. Autumnโs family had been affected too, though luckily they found work again quickly, so the damage wasnโt too deep.
Sierra had never intended to hide it. She knew she couldnโt, even if she tried.
She nodded. โItโs true.โ
She half-expected Autumn to be upset, but instead, Autumn just gave her a look that mixed awe, envy, and pure existential defeat.
โSierraโฆ how can someone be that good at everything?โ They werenโt even much younger than Jonathan, and they were still fumbling through their experiments โ meanwhile, heโd been building an empire.
Truly, some people were just built different.
