Chapter 314: Letting Go

Sierra had wanted to say it was nothing, but when she looked into Johnathanโ€™s wise eyesโ€”and remembered what she herself had saidโ€”she finally spoke up.

โ€œI just feel like Iโ€™m not much help to you.โ€

She didnโ€™t have the courage to admit that sheโ€™d been a little jealous just now. Seeing Quinn make lunch for Johnathan, chatting with him about workโ€ฆ She couldnโ€™t do any of that. She didnโ€™t even know how busy he had been latelyโ€”because he still came home on time every night.

โ€œThatโ€™s it?โ€ Johnathan raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering in his gaze. โ€œJust being by my side is already the best help you could give me.โ€

If it werenโ€™t for Sierra, there were a lot of things he wouldnโ€™t have held back on. He mightโ€™ve turned into someone even he wouldnโ€™t recognize. Because of her, his sense of boundaries still sat within the realm of ordinary people.

โ€œHave you been really busy lately?โ€

Sierra wrapped her arms around his, her voice soft. โ€œYou didnโ€™t say anything.โ€

โ€œA bit busier than before, but nothing I canโ€™t handle.โ€

To Johnathan, it wasnโ€™t a big deal. It just took more time than usual. He didnโ€™t see it as difficult and didnโ€™t think it was worth mentioning.

โ€œIf youโ€™re that busy, you donโ€™t need to make me breakfast every morning.โ€

Sometimes, Johnathan even made dinnerโ€”especially on the days she got so absorbed in her reading that she lost track of time.

โ€œI want to.โ€

Johnathan raised a brow. His favorite part of the day was feeding Sierra. He always thought she was too thin. After everything sheโ€™d been through, with her weak digestion on top of it, he always tried to make her meals as nutritious as possible. And over the past month or so, sheโ€™d gained a couple of poundsโ€”barely two or threeโ€”but it made him happier than landing a major deal.

Hearing that, the last trace of discomfort in Sierraโ€™s heart vanished. She realized sheโ€™d been too petty. Quinn wasnโ€™t really Johnathanโ€™s sister by blood, but theyโ€™d known each other for so longโ€”if something was going to happen, it wouldโ€™ve happened already. Besides, Quinn was kind to herโ€”warm, even. It felt like she truly saw Sierra as family. And here Sierra had been, feeling jealous over nothing.

That just made her feel even worse.

โ€œQuinnโ€™s busy with work every day. What about Dora?โ€ Sierra couldnโ€™t help but ask.

โ€œThatโ€™s good.โ€

Sierra felt a newfound admiration for Quinn. Working full-time, raising a three-year-old on her ownโ€”and still full of energy. Thinking about the food Quinn had made, Sierra added, โ€œSheโ€™s a really good cook.โ€

Even though she hadnโ€™t had much appetite earlier, she did eat a bit. She had to admitโ€”Quinnโ€™s cooking really was excellent. Sierra cooked too, but hers was more home-style stuff. Compared to Quinn, it just didnโ€™t measure up.

โ€œSheโ€™s always loved playing around in the kitchen,โ€ Johnathan replied. โ€œI remember she was just a kid when she started baking pastries on her own.โ€

There was something else he didnโ€™t say. Quinnโ€™s pastries tasted just like his motherโ€™s. After his mother passed, his emotions had spiraled. His grandfather brought Quinn to stay with him, and every now and then sheโ€™d make him something sweet. Thatโ€™s what slowly helped calm him down. Thatโ€™s whyโ€”even after his motherโ€™s deathโ€”heโ€™d always treated Quinn like a real sister. During one of the darkest periods of his life, she was the one who stood by him.

But Johnathan wasnโ€™t one to dwell on the past or share old wounds. What was done was done. No use bringing it up again and again. That didnโ€™t mean the hatred in his heart had faded with time. Not even a little.

Sierra didnโ€™t overthink it. Just hearing Quinn had started baking as a little girl made her feel a quiet kind of empathy. Kids from poor backgrounds grew up fast. Her own childhood had been rough, but at least sheโ€™d had her grandma looking out for her. Quinn had grown up in an orphanageโ€”life couldnโ€™t have been easy.

And with that thought, Sierra finally let go of all the jealousy in her heart. Seeing that Johnathan was busy, she didnโ€™t want to get in the way. After saying a few words to him, she got ready to head out and meet Autumn. Theyโ€™d made plans to go shopping for a gift for Professor Martin.

Johnathan clearly couldnโ€™t get away, and sighed helplessly. โ€œIโ€™ll come pick you up after work.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay. If youโ€™re too busy, I can head home myself.โ€
