Chapter 309: Brothers and Boundaries

This situation wasnโ€™t hard to handle. The only reason Jonathan hadnโ€™t stepped in earlier was because all the heat had been focused on himโ€”and he didnโ€™t care what people said about him. If it hadnโ€™t been for Sierraโ€™s public statement, he wouldโ€™ve stayed low and kept observing. But Sierraโ€™s post had made him decide to end the game early.

โ€œHave you figured out whoโ€™s behind it? Shane?โ€ Sierra guessed. Lately, Shane had been the one most hostile toward Jonathan.

โ€œNot just him,โ€ Jonathan let out a cold laugh.

That same day, Jonathan went to see Chase. Chase was surprised, even a little pleased, to see Jonathan come to him voluntarily. But the moment Jonathan opened his mouth, the smile disappeared completely.

โ€œKeep your son in line. If you wonโ€™t teach him, I can. But the price will be highโ€”donโ€™t come crying to me later.โ€ Jonathan didnโ€™t bother softening the blow.

Chaseโ€™s expression soured. โ€œAt least he doesnโ€™t cause as much trouble as you do.โ€

Jonathan wasnโ€™t fazed. โ€œThis is the first time, so Iโ€™m just warning you.โ€

Chase felt a jolt in his gut. He knew what his son was capable of. โ€œWhat are you planning now? Youโ€™ve already driven the Zach family out of Albanos. Isnโ€™t that enough?โ€

โ€œThen maybe ask your good son what heโ€™s been up to.โ€ With that, Jonathan turned and walked away, leaving Chase behindโ€”stunned and seething.

Chase knew Jonathan wouldnโ€™t say something like that without a reason. And he knew someone had been making moves against Jonathan lately. Could it really be Jose? That thought alone made him shake his head. Jose had always been obedientโ€ฆ hadnโ€™t he?

Still, later that night, Chase couldnโ€™t help himself. He called Jose home and confronted him in front of Susie.

โ€œYour brotherโ€™s in trouble. Was it you who set it up?โ€

Susie had just been chatting with Jose about school. She immediately looked up, startled. โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€ She turned to Jose. โ€œIs it true?โ€

Jose didnโ€™t want to admit it. But seeing how nervous his mother looked, something hardened inside him. โ€œYeah. It was me.โ€

โ€œYou?โ€ Before Chase could react, Susie shot to her feet. She stared at her son, furious. โ€œWhy would you do that? Heโ€™s your brother!โ€

โ€œBrother?โ€ Jose scoffed. โ€œAfter all these years, do you even remember how he treated us? How we treated him? Mom, when are you going to stop pretending? Why do we always have to give way to him? What do we owe him?โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ Susie shouted. She was always gentleโ€”but this time, her fury made her whole body shake. โ€œWhat did I teach you? Iโ€™m so disappointed in you.โ€

Seeing her like that, Jose felt even worse. โ€œI just donโ€™t understand. Why do you always treat him like heโ€™s more important? You always told me to be nice to him, to step aside, to never fight back. But why? Iโ€™m part of the Wynn family too. Why do I have toโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get worked up. Weโ€™ll figure it out,โ€ Chase said, worried.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Susie murmured, her eyes full of regret. โ€œI didnโ€™t raise him right.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault.โ€ Chase looked just as pained. He had two sonsโ€”and somehow, heโ€™d failed them both. He thought they would get along and that things would be peaceful. But both had resentment in their hearts. The thing he feared most had come true.

Susie finally calmed herself and said quietly, โ€œSend Jose abroad.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Chase turned to her. โ€œYou want to send him away? Youโ€™re willing to do that?โ€

Susie hesitated, torn, but nodded. โ€œThis isnโ€™t about what I want. Itโ€™s what we have to do.โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t let this end with them tearing each other apart.โ€ This was how she would protect her son. She knew Jonathanโ€™s temperament. If Jose kept pushing, Jonathan would never let it go. And if it came to that, nothing could stop the fallout.

โ€œIโ€™m afraid heโ€™ll hold a grudge,โ€ Chase said quietly.

โ€œA grudge is better than a disaster,โ€ Susie replied. Then, after a pause, added, โ€œIโ€™ll go with him.โ€

โ€œSusieโ€ฆโ€ Chase looked at her, eyes full of sorrow.
