Chapter 309: Brothers and Boundaries
This situation wasnโt hard to handle. The only reason Jonathan hadnโt stepped in earlier was because all the heat had been focused on himโand he didnโt care what people said about him. If it hadnโt been for Sierraโs public statement, he wouldโve stayed low and kept observing. But Sierraโs post had made him decide to end the game early.
โHave you figured out whoโs behind it? Shane?โ Sierra guessed. Lately, Shane had been the one most hostile toward Jonathan.
โNot just him,โ Jonathan let out a cold laugh.
That same day, Jonathan went to see Chase. Chase was surprised, even a little pleased, to see Jonathan come to him voluntarily. But the moment Jonathan opened his mouth, the smile disappeared completely.
โKeep your son in line. If you wonโt teach him, I can. But the price will be highโdonโt come crying to me later.โ Jonathan didnโt bother softening the blow.
Chaseโs expression soured. โAt least he doesnโt cause as much trouble as you do.โ
Jonathan wasnโt fazed. โThis is the first time, so Iโm just warning you.โ
Chase felt a jolt in his gut. He knew what his son was capable of. โWhat are you planning now? Youโve already driven the Zach family out of Albanos. Isnโt that enough?โ
โThen maybe ask your good son what heโs been up to.โ With that, Jonathan turned and walked away, leaving Chase behindโstunned and seething.
Chase knew Jonathan wouldnโt say something like that without a reason. And he knew someone had been making moves against Jonathan lately. Could it really be Jose? That thought alone made him shake his head. Jose had always been obedientโฆ hadnโt he?
Still, later that night, Chase couldnโt help himself. He called Jose home and confronted him in front of Susie.
โYour brotherโs in trouble. Was it you who set it up?โ
Susie had just been chatting with Jose about school. She immediately looked up, startled. โWhat did you just say?โ She turned to Jose. โIs it true?โ
Jose didnโt want to admit it. But seeing how nervous his mother looked, something hardened inside him. โYeah. It was me.โ
โYou?โ Before Chase could react, Susie shot to her feet. She stared at her son, furious. โWhy would you do that? Heโs your brother!โ
โBrother?โ Jose scoffed. โAfter all these years, do you even remember how he treated us? How we treated him? Mom, when are you going to stop pretending? Why do we always have to give way to him? What do we owe him?โ
โEnough!โ Susie shouted. She was always gentleโbut this time, her fury made her whole body shake. โWhat did I teach you? Iโm so disappointed in you.โ
Seeing her like that, Jose felt even worse. โI just donโt understand. Why do you always treat him like heโs more important? You always told me to be nice to him, to step aside, to never fight back. But why? Iโm part of the Wynn family too. Why do I have toโฆโ
โDonโt get worked up. Weโll figure it out,โ Chase said, worried.
โIโm sorry,โ Susie murmured, her eyes full of regret. โI didnโt raise him right.โ
โItโs not your fault.โ Chase looked just as pained. He had two sonsโand somehow, heโd failed them both. He thought they would get along and that things would be peaceful. But both had resentment in their hearts. The thing he feared most had come true.
Susie finally calmed herself and said quietly, โSend Jose abroad.โ
โWhat?โ Chase turned to her. โYou want to send him away? Youโre willing to do that?โ
Susie hesitated, torn, but nodded. โThis isnโt about what I want. Itโs what we have to do.โ
โWe canโt let this end with them tearing each other apart.โ This was how she would protect her son. She knew Jonathanโs temperament. If Jose kept pushing, Jonathan would never let it go. And if it came to that, nothing could stop the fallout.
โIโm afraid heโll hold a grudge,โ Chase said quietly.
โA grudge is better than a disaster,โ Susie replied. Then, after a pause, added, โIโll go with him.โ
โSusieโฆโ Chase looked at her, eyes full of sorrow.
