Chapter 304: I Only Believe What I Saw

If before he had only suspected, then after yesterday, Johnathan was certainโ€”Shane really did have feelings for Sierra. He had no clue why that idiot thought using that approach to get close to Sierra was a good idea, but the way he looked at herโ€ฆ it pissed him off. Just thinking about that look made his blood boil.

That lookโ€”the amazement, the possessivenessโ€”it was offensive. Honestly, it was a miracle Johnathan didnโ€™t deck him right there and then. The only reason he held back was because of the Goodman family. But if Shane kept pushing it! Johnathan wouldnโ€™t mind helping Jade teach him a lesson.

Maddox didnโ€™t even try to argue anymore. Shane was a lunatic. That much was obvious. His horse was clearly no match for Thunderclap, but he still insisted on racing Johnathan. And the way he whipped it, damn near beat the thing to death just trying to keep up. Thatโ€™s why the horse snapped.

Now, the horse wasnโ€™t quite deadโ€”but it was done for. And Shaneโ€™s broken leg? That was on him. But the ranch still had to give the Goodman family an explanation. The whole thing just made Maddox angry. Shane really was a dumbass.

Thankfully, Shane was the only one whoโ€™d lost his mind that weekend. No one else came by to bother them. The next two days passed peacefully. On Sunday afternoon, the group packed up and headed back to the city.

Before they parted ways, Johnathan looked over at Maddox. โ€œIf the Goodman family gives you grief, just send them my way.โ€

Maddox rolled his eyes. โ€œIโ€™m not some pushover. And come on, the guy whipped that horse half to death, then got thrown. Whoโ€™s he gonna blame?โ€ Heโ€™d already shipped the dead horse to the Goodmans himself. Said it was an apology, but really, it was proof of what Shane had done. Let Jade see for herself.

Johnathan had just been making conversation. The Treno family didnโ€™t exactly rank beneath the Goodmans. He had nothing to worry about. After a quick wave goodbye, he headed home.

Meanwhile, Sierra got back first. Dickson hadnโ€™t even come home all week. All she wanted was a hot bath. But before she could even step into the tub, Johnathan showed up. She shot him a look. โ€œMr. Yaeger, be a decent human being.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t do that around you.โ€ And with that, he scooped her up and set her down on the bathroom counter. โ€œPromise, thisโ€™ll be quick.โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t believe him for a second. โ€œJohnathan, your credibility here is deep in the negatives.โ€ He just laughed and stopped wasting his breath. Actions spoke louder anyway. At least this time, he actually kept his word. Before long, he was carrying her to bed.

โ€œIโ€™m exhausted,โ€ she muttered.

โ€œThen sleep.โ€ He kissed her forehead and climbed into bed with her. The next day, when Sierra woke up, Johnathan was already gone.

Johnathan owned more books than she could count. Most were related to his field, but there was a lot of other stuff too. Sierra wasnโ€™t pickyโ€”she read whatever caught her eye. She assumed heโ€™d gone to the company. What she didnโ€™t know was that Johnathan was actually over at the Wynn estate.

Mr. Wynn looked surprised when his grandson showed up unannounced. โ€œWell, this is rare. What brings you back today?โ€

Johnathan didnโ€™t get offended by the sarcasm. โ€œGrandpa, thank you.โ€ No matter what, the situation with Sierraโ€”his grandfather had helped make it happen.

โ€œHmph.โ€ Mr. Wynn snorted. Took him over two weeks to finally come back and say it. Figures. Johnathan didnโ€™t bother explaining. โ€œThings have just been busy lately.โ€

โ€œBusy with that company of yours?โ€ His grandfatherโ€™s expression shifted. โ€œWhen are you planning to take over the family business?โ€

โ€œAs long as youโ€™re not rushing me, I can take over anytime,โ€ Johnathan said flatly.

โ€œThen let me askโ€”can you spare them?โ€ Mr. Wynn knew the answer, but he still held onto a shred of hope. Johnathan stayed silent. The silence didnโ€™t surprise Mr. Wynn. He waved him off. โ€œGo. Get out of here. I donโ€™t want to see you right now.โ€

Johnathan stood. โ€œGrandpa, thereโ€™s no smoothing things over anymore. Sooner or later, itโ€™s going to end.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s your father,โ€ Mr. Wynn snapped.

โ€œThe day I watched my mother die in front of me,โ€ Johnathan said, face blank, โ€œI stopped having a father.โ€ Mr. Wynnโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œItโ€™s not what you think. Back thenโ€”โ€

Johnathan raised a hand, cutting him off. โ€œI only believe what I saw.โ€
