Chapter 303: You Brought That on Yourself
โThey just got a call. One of the horses got spooked. Someone got thrown off,โ the staff announced, not waiting for Sierra to ask questions. They jumped into the car with the doctors and sped off.
Sierraโs face changed. She couldnโt sit still. Her first thought was that something had happened to Johnathan and the others. Draven, of course, was much calmer. โRelax. Even if someone fell, it wonโt be any of them. Itโs probably one of the guys Shane brought.โ
โThey all went out together?โ Sierra asked quickly.
โYeah. They were racing. Even put money on it, I think. Didnโt I mention that?โ Draven looked like he was just realizing he hadnโt told her that part. Sierra stared at him, utterly speechless.
Knowing Johnathan was with Shane made her even more on edge. Just then, the sound of hooves came pounding toward them. Sierra looked upโand immediately spotted the massive black stallion in the lead. The man on its back made her finally breathe easier.
Johnathan and the others rode in fast, though Maddox was nowhere in sight. โWhereโs the rest of you! What about Shane?โ she asked.
โShane broke his leg. Heโs waiting for the medics to take him out,โ Stone replied.
โHis legโs broken?โ Sierra instinctively turned to Johnathan. She didnโt know why, but it felt like he had something to do with it.
โNot my problem. He couldnโt keep up and fell off on his own,โ Johnathan said, completely unfazed.
Mateo and Stone exchanged a look. They didnโt say anything, but their expressions said plenty. Johnathan, innocent? Please. He and Shane had been at each otherโs throats since morning. When Shane suggested a race, Johnathan agreed on the spot. And then he absolutely crushed him. Shane refused to admit defeat and pushed his horse too hard. The poor animal panicked, lost control, and threw him off.
So yeahโtechnically not Johnathanโs fault. All he did was provoke, insult, and humiliate the guy into making a dumb move. Classic Johnathan. He didnโt seem to care one bit. His eyes were fixed solely on Sierra.
She didnโt wear dresses oftenโthe last time was her birthday party. But here she was in a long white one, and just looking at her made his throat tighten. He swallowed hard before finally saying, โYou look good.โ
So good, in fact, that he was getting ideas again. Sierra didnโt need to guess. She could tell exactly what was going through his head just from the look in his eyes. Unbelievable. Is this man a machine? Theyโd gone at it almost all night. Then he got up first thing in the morning to go ride horses. Wasnโt he tired? Whether he was or wasnโt, Sierra definitely was. Everything hurt. When he caught her glare, Johnathan actually looked a little guilty.
Chapter 303: You Brought That on Yourself
โDamn shame. Broken leg. Heโs gonna be stuck at home for a few months. Better take it easy, Shane.โ
Maybe it was the embarrassment, maybe the painโbut Shane didnโt have that usual fake smile on his face. He looked downright coldโฆ
โIโm not dying,โ he muttered. He started to say moreโthen noticed Sierra standing a short distance away. She was still in that long white dress. He blinked. Then his eyes droppedโand locked onto her neck. Even with her hair down, she couldnโt hide all of it. The marks were still there. One glance and anyone could tell what she and Johnathan had been up to last night.
Shaneโs face darkened instantly. He lifted his gaze toward Johnathan, eyes cold as ice. Johnathan met his stare with one even sharper. The tension between them crackled like live wires. The air was thick. Right as things were about to boil over, Maddox came rushing from the car and shoved himself between them.
โShane, you should get to the hospital. Donโt waste time.โ
Shane looked at Maddox and gave a faint smile. โAppreciate the concern.โ Then his friends helped him back to the car, and they left. Maddox finally let out a long sigh of relief. He turned to Johnathan and couldnโt help saying, โHeโs the only heir the Goodman familyโs got left. Maybe take it easy.โ
If anything happened to Shaneโif he actually diedโJade would absolutely lose it. And with the kind of power she held now, that would be a problem for everyone.
โHe brought it on himself,โ Johnathan said coldly. And he wasnโt lying. Heโd seen the way Shane looked at Sierra last night.
