Chapter 270: The Line That Canโ€™t Be Crossed

Jonathan had barely left when Sierraโ€™s phone rang. Unknown number.

โ€œHello?โ€

There was a beat of silence. She checked the screen, thinking it was a wrong number. Just as she moved to hang up, a voice she knew too well spoke.

โ€œLong time no see.โ€

Sierra went still. Shane.

Sheโ€™d almost managed to forget him, to bury those three years like they were nothing but a nightmare sheโ€™d finally woken from. But hearing his voice was enough to remind herโ€”she hadnโ€™t escaped anything. Not really.

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ she said.

โ€œJust thought Iโ€™d see how youโ€™re doing,โ€ Shane said casually, like they were old friends.

โ€œYeah? Well, I donโ€™t want to see you.โ€

She moved to hang up.

โ€œYouโ€™re awfully confident now,โ€ he added. โ€œMust be nice, having Jonathan behind you. But are you really so sure of your place? You think the Wynn familyโ€™s going to accept someone like you?โ€

โ€œNot your concern,โ€ she snapped, and hung up before he could say another word. Then she blocked the number.

Her good mood was gone in a flash. She didnโ€™t know what Shane was up to, but she knew him well enough to guessโ€”it wasnโ€™t anything good.

She considered telling Jonathan, but after a moment, decided to wait. Right now, he had enough on his plate.

At that exact moment, Jonathan was arriving at the Wynn familyโ€™s private hospital. As soon as he walked in, he was stopped.

โ€œThe patriarch says no visitors.โ€

It was one of his grandfatherโ€™s oldest aides. Loyal. Trusted.

Jonathanโ€™s expression didnโ€™t change, but his chest tightened.

โ€œHow is he?โ€

The man sighed. โ€œSirโ€ฆ he really was upset. He collapsed the night of the party. The doctors say if this keeps up, thereโ€™s a serious risk of a stroke. You know how old he is. And he loves you, more than anyone. Pleaseโ€ฆ think about him.โ€

Jonathan looked toward the tightly closed door. He stood there for a few seconds, then turned and left.

Right outside the hospital doors, he ran straight into Chase. Father and son locked eyes like two enemies on a battlefield.

โ€œHow long are you planning to hold this grudge?โ€ Chase said.

Jonathan stared back, cold and quiet.

Chase flinched like heโ€™d been hit. He hadnโ€™t expected that. Somewhere deep down, heโ€™d believed they could still fix this. That Jonathan would come around eventually.

When Jonathan tried to walk past him, Chase reached out and grabbed his arm.

โ€œItโ€™s not what you think,โ€ he said quickly.

Jonathan looked at him with thinly veiled disgust. โ€œOh? So youโ€™re telling me you didnโ€™t cheat? That Joseโ€™s not your kid? Or maybe you want me to believe you werenโ€™t with your mistressโ€”your new little familyโ€”while my mother was dying?โ€

Every word hit like a punch. Chaseโ€™s face turned a shade paler with each one.

No one else in the Wynn family knew the truth. Only the three of them had been there when his mother died.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Chase said, voice barely above a whisper. โ€œI didnโ€™t knowโ€”โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t know because you didnโ€™t care!โ€ Jonathan snapped. โ€œYou didnโ€™t know she was sick. You didnโ€™t know I spent every day hoping youโ€™d come back. You werenโ€™t there. You never were. I kept wondering why my dad wasnโ€™t coming. Then I found out the truth. We were never important to you.โ€

Chase opened his mouth again, but nothing came out.

โ€œYou were never a father to me. So donโ€™t act like one now,โ€ Jonathan said. โ€œAnd donโ€™t think Iโ€™m letting anything go. You want your son to challenge me for the Wynn family? Fine. Letโ€™s see if he survives it.โ€

Chase looked horrified.

โ€œHeโ€™s your brother! You hate me, fine, but heโ€™s always respected you. All heโ€™s ever wanted was your approval. Heโ€•โ€

โ€œShut up,โ€ Jonathan cut him off. โ€œYou want to cry about this? Do it somewhere else. Iโ€™m not going to make a scene in front of the hospitalโ€”but donโ€™t think for a second this is over.โ€

He gave his father one last look before walking away.

Chase stood there, stunned. And old. So much older than just a few minutes ago. He looked down at the ground, eyes heavy with pain. There were things he regretted. Deeply. But some thingsโ€ฆ once broken, just couldnโ€™t be fixed.

Johnathan didnโ€™t go home right away. Instead, he called up He Shen and a few others, gathered them together for drinks. He was calm, drinking slowly, relaxed evenโ€”but the look in his eyes said otherwise.

While they talked, Jonathan laid out his next steps. And this time, he wasnโ€™t holding back.
