Chapter 270: The Line That Canโt Be Crossed
Jonathan had barely left when Sierraโs phone rang. Unknown number.
โHello?โ
There was a beat of silence. She checked the screen, thinking it was a wrong number. Just as she moved to hang up, a voice she knew too well spoke.
โLong time no see.โ
Sierra went still. Shane.
Sheโd almost managed to forget him, to bury those three years like they were nothing but a nightmare sheโd finally woken from. But hearing his voice was enough to remind herโshe hadnโt escaped anything. Not really.
โWhat do you want?โ she said.
โJust thought Iโd see how youโre doing,โ Shane said casually, like they were old friends.
โYeah? Well, I donโt want to see you.โ
She moved to hang up.
โYouโre awfully confident now,โ he added. โMust be nice, having Jonathan behind you. But are you really so sure of your place? You think the Wynn familyโs going to accept someone like you?โ
โNot your concern,โ she snapped, and hung up before he could say another word. Then she blocked the number.
Her good mood was gone in a flash. She didnโt know what Shane was up to, but she knew him well enough to guessโit wasnโt anything good.
She considered telling Jonathan, but after a moment, decided to wait. Right now, he had enough on his plate.
At that exact moment, Jonathan was arriving at the Wynn familyโs private hospital. As soon as he walked in, he was stopped.
โThe patriarch says no visitors.โ
It was one of his grandfatherโs oldest aides. Loyal. Trusted.
Jonathanโs expression didnโt change, but his chest tightened.
โHow is he?โ
The man sighed. โSirโฆ he really was upset. He collapsed the night of the party. The doctors say if this keeps up, thereโs a serious risk of a stroke. You know how old he is. And he loves you, more than anyone. Pleaseโฆ think about him.โ
Jonathan looked toward the tightly closed door. He stood there for a few seconds, then turned and left.
Right outside the hospital doors, he ran straight into Chase. Father and son locked eyes like two enemies on a battlefield.
โHow long are you planning to hold this grudge?โ Chase said.
Jonathan stared back, cold and quiet.
Chase flinched like heโd been hit. He hadnโt expected that. Somewhere deep down, heโd believed they could still fix this. That Jonathan would come around eventually.
When Jonathan tried to walk past him, Chase reached out and grabbed his arm.
โItโs not what you think,โ he said quickly.
Jonathan looked at him with thinly veiled disgust. โOh? So youโre telling me you didnโt cheat? That Joseโs not your kid? Or maybe you want me to believe you werenโt with your mistressโyour new little familyโwhile my mother was dying?โ
Every word hit like a punch. Chaseโs face turned a shade paler with each one.
No one else in the Wynn family knew the truth. Only the three of them had been there when his mother died.
โIโm sorry,โ Chase said, voice barely above a whisper. โI didnโt knowโโ
โYou didnโt know because you didnโt care!โ Jonathan snapped. โYou didnโt know she was sick. You didnโt know I spent every day hoping youโd come back. You werenโt there. You never were. I kept wondering why my dad wasnโt coming. Then I found out the truth. We were never important to you.โ
Chase opened his mouth again, but nothing came out.
โYou were never a father to me. So donโt act like one now,โ Jonathan said. โAnd donโt think Iโm letting anything go. You want your son to challenge me for the Wynn family? Fine. Letโs see if he survives it.โ
Chase looked horrified.
โHeโs your brother! You hate me, fine, but heโs always respected you. All heโs ever wanted was your approval. Heโโ
โShut up,โ Jonathan cut him off. โYou want to cry about this? Do it somewhere else. Iโm not going to make a scene in front of the hospitalโbut donโt think for a second this is over.โ
He gave his father one last look before walking away.
Chase stood there, stunned. And old. So much older than just a few minutes ago. He looked down at the ground, eyes heavy with pain. There were things he regretted. Deeply. But some thingsโฆ once broken, just couldnโt be fixed.
Johnathan didnโt go home right away. Instead, he called up He Shen and a few others, gathered them together for drinks. He was calm, drinking slowly, relaxed evenโbut the look in his eyes said otherwise.
While they talked, Jonathan laid out his next steps. And this time, he wasnโt holding back.
