Chapter 261: No More Lies

Johnathan didnโ€™t give Sierra an answer the whole way home. It wasnโ€™t that he couldnโ€™t have said something to brush her off. But when it came to Sierra, he didnโ€™t want to lieโ€”not even a little.

It wasnโ€™t until they got out of the car that he finally spoke. โ€œI canโ€™t answer you yet. Give me a little more time.โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t feel disappointed at all. In fact, she smiled, genuinely happy. โ€œOkay!โ€ Sheโ€™d much rather hear that than be lied to. And with that, the distance between them seemed to shrink againโ€”bit by bit.

While the two of them were caught up in their moment, Shane had already gotten the information he wanted on the owner of the car. โ€œJohnathan. I knew it.โ€ He hadnโ€™t been sure at the timeโ€”heโ€™d just had a gut feeling. And he still hadnโ€™t figured out who exactly Johnathan was. That in itself wasโ€ฆ strange.

In Albanos, the number of people he couldnโ€™t investigate could be counted on one hand. He just didnโ€™t know yet which hand Johnathan belonged to. He also learned that Sierra was now attending North Salem University. โ€œStill as clueless as ever.โ€ His voice was cold, his expression full of disdain.

Sheโ€™d said she didnโ€™t want to move. But now, for Johnathan, she changed her mind. How many times had she learned the hard way, and she still hadnโ€™t caught on? Could someone like Johnathan really be trusted with her future?

He was about to do something about it when Jade called him into the study. โ€œI just heard something. The Wynn family is about to announce their new family head.โ€ Jade had barely gotten the news and was already planning ahead. โ€œIโ€™ll find a way to get us an invitation. Youโ€™re going with me.โ€

โ€œNot interested.โ€ Shane shot it down without hesitation. โ€œAsk someone else.โ€

Jadeโ€™s face darkened. โ€œHow long are you going to keep this up?โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t even brought up what happened in Maviston yet.โ€

โ€œWhat exactly do you mean?โ€

Shaneโ€™s voice turned mocking. โ€œThe Richardson family really is loyal to you. Took the fall for everything without saying a word.โ€

โ€œYou little bastard! What nonsense are you spewing? What does the Richardson familyโ€™s business have to do with me?โ€ Jade slammed the desk with his hand.

โ€œDonโ€™t forgetโ€”youโ€™re still a Gong. People show you respect for a reason. I just donโ€™t get it. Even if the Goodman family falls, what good does it do you? What a joke. People really do need some sort of entertainment in life, huh?โ€

โ€œEnough. Stop messing around.โ€

โ€œWhat happened in Maviston was already difficult enough to cover up. It didnโ€™t blow back on you because I took care of it. Donโ€™t start stirring things up again.โ€

Shane let out a short laugh, like heโ€™d heard the dumbest thing ever. Whoโ€™s the one messing around here, really? That whole mess in Maviston had caused such a stir, and in the end, it was brushed aside with a slap on the wrist for a few small players. They both knew who had pulled those strings.

Jade didnโ€™t want to argue anymore. He turned back to analyzing the current situation. โ€œIโ€™ve moved up again recently, but letโ€™s be honestโ€”I still donโ€™t have a real foundation. Itโ€™s like walking on a tightrope. The Wynn family, you know what kind of weight they carry. Centuries of legacy. We canโ€™t even begin to compare. If we could get their support, it would change everything for the Goodman family. Iโ€™m getting old, Shane. One day, this family will be yours. You need to grow up.โ€

โ€œI said Iโ€™m not interested.โ€ Shane stood up lazily. โ€œUncle, Iโ€™m just your nephew. Donโ€™t put all your hopes on me.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you hurry up and have a kid yourself?โ€ He dropped the words without the slightest care, completely ignoring the ugly look on Jadeโ€™s face as he strolled out.

โ€œUngrateful brat!โ€ Jade wanted to put a bullet through himโ€”but all he could do was think about it. Heโ€™d been injured years ago. He could never have children again. If not for that, he wouldnโ€™t have wasted so much effort on Shane.

That kidโ€™s personalityโ€ฆ

Knowing brute force wouldnโ€™t work, Jade pulled out a stack of reportsโ€”every record of what Shane had done in Maviston during those three years. Eventually, his gaze landed on one name in particular. Sierra.

Others might not notice anything. But he knew Shane too well. It looked like Shane was tormenting her. But in reality, he was protecting her. If not for Shane, Sierra wouldโ€™ve died in prison a long time ago.
