Chapter 261: No More Lies
Johnathan didnโt give Sierra an answer the whole way home. It wasnโt that he couldnโt have said something to brush her off. But when it came to Sierra, he didnโt want to lieโnot even a little.
It wasnโt until they got out of the car that he finally spoke. โI canโt answer you yet. Give me a little more time.โ
Sierra didnโt feel disappointed at all. In fact, she smiled, genuinely happy. โOkay!โ Sheโd much rather hear that than be lied to. And with that, the distance between them seemed to shrink againโbit by bit.
While the two of them were caught up in their moment, Shane had already gotten the information he wanted on the owner of the car. โJohnathan. I knew it.โ He hadnโt been sure at the timeโheโd just had a gut feeling. And he still hadnโt figured out who exactly Johnathan was. That in itself wasโฆ strange.
In Albanos, the number of people he couldnโt investigate could be counted on one hand. He just didnโt know yet which hand Johnathan belonged to. He also learned that Sierra was now attending North Salem University. โStill as clueless as ever.โ His voice was cold, his expression full of disdain.
Sheโd said she didnโt want to move. But now, for Johnathan, she changed her mind. How many times had she learned the hard way, and she still hadnโt caught on? Could someone like Johnathan really be trusted with her future?
He was about to do something about it when Jade called him into the study. โI just heard something. The Wynn family is about to announce their new family head.โ Jade had barely gotten the news and was already planning ahead. โIโll find a way to get us an invitation. Youโre going with me.โ
โNot interested.โ Shane shot it down without hesitation. โAsk someone else.โ
Jadeโs face darkened. โHow long are you going to keep this up?โ
โI havenโt even brought up what happened in Maviston yet.โ
โWhat exactly do you mean?โ
Shaneโs voice turned mocking. โThe Richardson family really is loyal to you. Took the fall for everything without saying a word.โ
โYou little bastard! What nonsense are you spewing? What does the Richardson familyโs business have to do with me?โ Jade slammed the desk with his hand.
โDonโt forgetโyouโre still a Gong. People show you respect for a reason. I just donโt get it. Even if the Goodman family falls, what good does it do you? What a joke. People really do need some sort of entertainment in life, huh?โ
โEnough. Stop messing around.โ
โWhat happened in Maviston was already difficult enough to cover up. It didnโt blow back on you because I took care of it. Donโt start stirring things up again.โ
Shane let out a short laugh, like heโd heard the dumbest thing ever. Whoโs the one messing around here, really? That whole mess in Maviston had caused such a stir, and in the end, it was brushed aside with a slap on the wrist for a few small players. They both knew who had pulled those strings.
Jade didnโt want to argue anymore. He turned back to analyzing the current situation. โIโve moved up again recently, but letโs be honestโI still donโt have a real foundation. Itโs like walking on a tightrope. The Wynn family, you know what kind of weight they carry. Centuries of legacy. We canโt even begin to compare. If we could get their support, it would change everything for the Goodman family. Iโm getting old, Shane. One day, this family will be yours. You need to grow up.โ
โI said Iโm not interested.โ Shane stood up lazily. โUncle, Iโm just your nephew. Donโt put all your hopes on me.โ
โWhy donโt you hurry up and have a kid yourself?โ He dropped the words without the slightest care, completely ignoring the ugly look on Jadeโs face as he strolled out.
โUngrateful brat!โ Jade wanted to put a bullet through himโbut all he could do was think about it. Heโd been injured years ago. He could never have children again. If not for that, he wouldnโt have wasted so much effort on Shane.
That kidโs personalityโฆ
Knowing brute force wouldnโt work, Jade pulled out a stack of reportsโevery record of what Shane had done in Maviston during those three years. Eventually, his gaze landed on one name in particular. Sierra.
Others might not notice anything. But he knew Shane too well. It looked like Shane was tormenting her. But in reality, he was protecting her. If not for Shane, Sierra wouldโve died in prison a long time ago.
