Chapter 260: That Dog of a Student

โ€œFor now, just stick to your own ideas,โ€ Professor Martin said. โ€œIf you run into problems, shoot me an email. But let me be clearโ€”I wonโ€™t have answers for everything.โ€

He clicked his tongue and added, โ€œYou can ask that little bastard, too. Heโ€™s useless at most things, but when it comes to thinking outside the box, heโ€™s not bad.โ€

โ€œGot it, Professor!โ€ Sierra couldnโ€™t help smiling.

Even though Professor Martin spoke of Jonathan with obvious disdain, if you listened closely, there was pride behind every wordโ€”pride that one of his students was Jonathan.

โ€œYou work hard and aim to surpass that little bastard. Noโ€”scratch that. You have to surpass him.โ€

Professor Martin looked thoroughly annoyed. โ€œAll that talent, wasted. Always messing around instead of using it properly.โ€

Sierra knew he was talking about Jonathan. She didnโ€™t really know what to say, so she just gave a small smile.

Professor Martin shot her a look. โ€œSmile, smile, smile. You look like a damn fool. No wonder heโ€™s got you wrapped around his finger!โ€

Sierra was speechless.

After a round of his signature โ€˜guidance,โ€™ Professor Martin finally left, and only then did everyone dare to breathe again.

Autumn looked completely drained. โ€œI swear, our professor mustโ€™ve studied literature too. His vocabulary is too impressive. Just another day of being verbally demolished.โ€

The others all looked like theyโ€™d been through a war. Then, one by one, they turned to look at Sierraโ€”eyes burning with intensity. She instinctively stepped back.

Autumn was the first to speak. โ€œIโ€™m so jealous of you. He didnโ€™t even yell at you. He actually spoke to you nicely. He called me a dumbass.โ€

Sierra tried to gently remind them, โ€œThatโ€™s really not even that badโ€ฆโ€

Autumn gave her a โ€œyou-sweet-summer-childโ€ look. โ€œNot bad? Thatโ€™s basically him showering you with affection.โ€

Sierra was speechless.

Okay, maybe she was a little naive.

That afternoon, when Jonathan came to pick her up, Sierra told him everything that had happened.

His expression turned a bit strange. โ€œAfter all these years, the old manโ€™s still that energetic.โ€

Sierra looked at him. โ€œMore than that, I want to knowโ€”what did you do back then?โ€

She could sense there was still some lingering bitterness from the professor.

โ€œI wanted to leave after learning what I needed. He didnโ€™t want me to go, so I ran off. Think I went abroad after thatโ€ฆ studiedโ€ฆ art.โ€

Sierra stared at him, her expression shifting.

Biochemistry and art. Those two couldnโ€™t be further apart. No wonder the professor was so furious.

Talk about wasted potential. Just hearing that made her feel indignantโ€”and she wasnโ€™t even the one being let down.

She said sincerely, โ€œMr. Yaeger, donโ€™t say that in front of anyone else. Iโ€™m afraid someone might actually hit you.โ€

Johnathan looked pleased. โ€œThey couldnโ€™t beat me anyway.โ€

Sierra was speechless.

She was tempted to throw a punch herself. How could anyone be this smug?

Jonathan rarely saw her like this and found it incredibly amusing.

He freed one hand to gently ruffle her hair.

โ€œYou know, thatโ€™s exactly how people feel when they look at you. Why do you think the old man took you in? Sierra, one day, your achievements will surpass mine.โ€

Sierra thought about that for a moment. โ€œNo way. Iโ€™m not as freakishly gifted as you.โ€

She was good in one field, but Jonathan? He made it feel like there was nothing he couldnโ€™t do.

โ€œThatโ€™s just boredom. When youโ€™re bored, you end up messing with random things. Otherwise, you do worse stuff. But if you ever focused all your energy on just one thing for a while, youโ€™d succeed too. The difference isโ€”you care. Youโ€™ve got people you donโ€™t want to disappoint. Youโ€™ve got goals. Youโ€™re not like me.โ€

He said it lightly, as if it didnโ€™t matter, but something about it made Sierra pause. She looked at him.

โ€œAnd now? Mr. Yaegerโ€”have you found your goal yet?โ€
