Chapter 257: A Deal Between Lovers

Sierraโ€™s heart skipped a beat. She quickly said, โ€œSorry, I didnโ€™t knowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Johnathan cut her off, his voice calm. โ€œItโ€™s all in the past.โ€

Is it really in the past? Sierra looked at his profile. He seemed like he wanted to smile out of habit, but remembering what she had said earlier, he didnโ€™t force it.

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you about it when Iโ€™m ready. Justโ€ฆ not right now.โ€

โ€œAlright!โ€ Sierra agreed easily. โ€œThe teacherโ€™s coming back next week. Didnโ€™t you say you wanted to go see him? Want to give him a heads-up or just surprise him?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll see. Iโ€™m not sure if Iโ€™ll have time next week,โ€ Johnathan replied. He needed to plan for both outcomes. Even though he promised his grandfather heโ€™d host a birthday party, he had a feeling that day wouldnโ€™t go smoothly.

โ€œOkay.โ€ Sierra didnโ€™t push. She just said, โ€œIโ€™m really busy too, but I donโ€™t like this. I think there should be more to life than just research. Mr. Yaeger, how about we make a deal? No matter how busy we are, we keep weekends free. Unless something urgent comes up, of course.โ€

Johnathan gave her a teasing look. โ€œYou sure you can stick to that?โ€

She knew he was calling her outโ€”she had been the especially busy one lately. Sierra felt a little embarrassed. Truth was, she had been running, pushing herself harder and harder in the lab to feel like she was getting stronger, like she was catching up. But after what happened today, she realized that if they kept going like this, theyโ€™d only grow further apart. No oneโ€™s perfect. Johnathan wasnโ€™t as invincible as he looked. He had scars too. He had a past he didnโ€™t want to talk about, just like she had her ownโ€”three years behind bars, the things she went throughโ€ฆ things sheโ€™d never want anyone to know. What they needed was to tend to each otherโ€™s wounds, not keep hiding and drifting apart.

Thinking of that, she said, โ€œI wonโ€™t be like that anymore. Iโ€™ll make time on weekends, Iโ€™ll talk to the teacher and my seniors too. And if I donโ€™t keep my word, you can punish me.โ€

โ€œPunish you?โ€ Johnathan looked interested. โ€œAny kind of punishment?โ€

Theyโ€™d been together long enough that Sierra instantly caught the meaning behind his words. She cleared her throat, the tips of her ears turning red. She pressed her lips together and replied, โ€œYes.โ€

Then she saw Johnathan visibly brighten. She quickly added, โ€œJohnathan was definitely in a good mood now. He smirked and said, โ€œSierra, thatโ€™s not how you negotiate. If you bargain like that, youโ€™ll walk away with nothing but your underwear.โ€

Sierra didnโ€™t argue. She just said, โ€œBut Iโ€™m negotiating with my boyfriend. Doesnโ€™t that mean he should cut me a little slack?โ€

She rarely showed weakness. She was used to handling everything on her own. Maybe thatโ€™s why, when she did let her guard down like this, it felt especially moving. Who knew how others might reactโ€”but Johnathan couldnโ€™t resist it. He couldnโ€™t help but reach out and gently squeeze her hand. Holding himself back, he said, โ€œLet me teach you somethingโ€”say more things like that, and Iโ€™d give you my whole damn life.โ€

Sierra suddenly felt shy. She pulled her hand back and said awkwardly, โ€œAlright, itโ€™s getting late. Letโ€™s head back.โ€
