Chapter 708 The Breaking Point
โShe says you two quarreling shouldnโt involve her. Sheโs old, canโt take the stress.โ
Wyatt stood silent.
Then he snapped, โYunice too? She wonโt even see me?โ
The housekeeper replied, โMs. Laurie says thereโs no one else at home. You should look somewhere else.โ
Wyatt had no words left.
He stepped back, lifting his head to stare up at the small townhouse.
At that moment, the light in one of the rooms turned off.
Behind him, the door was quietly shut by the housekeeper.
Wyatt stared at the window that had just gone dark, then pulled out his phone and called Yunice.
Unsurprisingly, she didnโt answer.
She was lying in bed, tucked beneath the covers, sitting upright as she stared blankly into the dim glow of moonlight.
Wyatt sent her a message: โThereโs news about Oscarโs case.โ
Of course there was.
Yunice had deliberately fed that information to the policeโclaiming she was dyingโjust to force Oscarโs hand. If he still had any familial feeling left, heโd definitely agree to a meeting in exchange for a confession.
Wyatt sent another text when she didnโt reply: โYouโre so mad at me youโre willing to ignore your own brother now?โ
At that moment, Yuniceโs phone chimed again. This time it was from one of her informants.
โWyattโs shut down another one of our contacts. What a scumbag.โ
Her point of contact had been cut off againโmeaning she had no way of getting real-time updates about Oscar.
And the truth was, she was desperate to know what Oscar had seen in that surveillance footage. Wyatt had timed this perfectly, hitting her where she was weakest: her curiosity.
Then came another message from him: โPaulโs escape had nothing to do with me. Just give me a little more time.โ
Yunice rubbed her fingers along the edge of her phone, then typed back: โYouโve been blocking my people?โ
The moment Wyatt saw her reply, a small smile formed at the corner of his mouth. He answered:
โCome home with me, and Iโll release them.โ
โAre you threatening me?โ
โIโm just asking you to come home.โ
โThat is a threat. With all your power and influence, why bother going through the trouble? Why not just send a couple men over and drag me back?โ
He could tell she was being sarcasticโand calling his bluff.
So he sent another message, pacing around outside her building: โThen tell me what itโll take to bring you back.โ And then added: โIf you say divorce, itโs a no.โ
Yunice responded with just one line: โIโm tired. Go home.โ
She refused to bargain, to give him any leverage.
Just then, Wyatt received a grim update: Nora had been released.
โWyatt, Nora swallowed a razor blade, got rushed to the hospital, and escaped during surgeryโฆโ
Wyattโs brows twisted into a dark knot. He hadnโt managed to catch Paul, and now Nora had slipped away too. Adding insult to injury.
โUseless.โ He hissed through gritted teeth.
No one on the other end dared say a word.
Fuming, he looked back up toward the dark window.
Then sent Yunice one final message: โIf you like staying here, stay. Iโm leaving.โ
Inside, Yunice saw the message, walked to the window, and pulled back the curtain just enough to glimpse Wyattโs car turning out of the courtyard.
She dropped the curtain and finally went to sleep.
The next morning, Yunice emerged in her pajamas, refreshed and calm.
Laurie blinked in surprise at her glow: โWyatt didnโt keep you up last night? You actually slept?โ
Yunice took a sip of water. โSleep comes firstโno matter how big the problem is.โ
There really wasnโt much left in the world that could ruin her peace of mind.
Laurie glanced at a suit laid out nearby. Yunice raised a brow. โYou going to work?โ
โYeah,โ Laurie replied. โI burned through my annual leave when I went to the medical university. Gotta make it up now.โ
Yunice looked apologetic. โWhat about Betty?โ
โShe likes the quiet. And Iโll still be home in the evenings. What about you? Any plans?โ
Yunice had plenty of safe housesโFreyaโs, the Crawford estate, Gillโs place, even Kingsleyโs.
But hiding like this wasnโt a long-term plan. The most urgent thing was to ditch the two trackers Wyatt had set on her.
Once Laurie left, Yunice sent Kingsley a message: โKingsley, we can leave now.โ
Half an hour later, her phone buzzed again.
She changed clothes, removed all her jewelry, and left her phone on the tableโanchored under a letter.
As she descended the stairs, Betty was still at the giant blackboard, frowning at a chemical formula.
Yuniceโs footsteps pulled her from her thoughts. She looked up. โHelloโฆโ
Yunice walked over and patted her head.
โBetty, Iโve got something to take care of. If Wyatt shows up, tell him I left something for him in my room.โ
Betty nodded without a second thought.
Yuniceโs silhouette grew smaller as she walked away.
Betty propped her chin on her hand and went right back to her formula.
