Chapter 707 Cold Hearts and Closed Doors
The man set down his drink and slid over to Wyattโs side on the couch, lowering his voice. โWe just brought in a new batch of girls. How about I call them in, and you pick one? Weโll place some betsโsee whoโs got what it takes to become the top of the roster.โ
The others jumped in eagerly. โYeah! Letโs do it! How much are we betting?โ
โHalf a million sound good?โ
โWell? Whatโre you standing around for? Go call them! Canโt you see Wyattโs waiting?โ
The man glanced at Wyatt, who still hadnโt said a word, his expression unreadable. He signaled a server to bring the women in.
Soon, two rows of women filed in, each with a different look and style, striking poses in the open space.
โWyatt?โ the man called out, trying to draw him back in.
But Wyatt didnโt even glance at them. He was somewhere else entirely.
Suddenly, his voice cut through the tension.
โWhat do you do when a woman doesnโt listen?โ
The man blinked, unsure if the question was directed at him, but replied instinctively. โYou get a new one who does?โ
Wyattโs eyes finally lifted. They locked on the manโsteady, unreadable, dangerous.
The man chuckled awkwardly, playing along. โWomen act out when you spoil โem. Give her the cold shoulder a few days, sheโll realize sheโs not that special. Sheโll crawl back on her own.โ
He cast a suggestive look over the lineup. โWant me to set you up with one, Wyatt?โ
He pulled a woman forward. โLook at this oneโsheโs gorgeous. The more beautiful she is, the more pressure it puts on the one giving you trouble. Just walk her in front of that stuck-up woman, and sheโll come begging for your attention.โ
โBetter yet, let her teach that woman a lesson for you.โ
Wyatt raised his hand, fingers pointing downward.
The man frowned, confused.
Jordan, standing silently nearby, translated: โGet down.โ
The manโs face went pale.
He darted a nervous glance at Wyatt, then at Jordanโwho gave him nothing.
Swallowing hard, the man dropped to his knees.
Wyatt crossed one leg over the other and pressed the sole of his shoe against the manโs shoulder.
The pressure sent a tremor down his spineโand a chill into his chest.
Where had he gone wrong? What could he say to fix it?
But the worst part wasโฆ he didnโt even know who had pushed Wyatt over the edge.
Then Wyatt spoke, voice like frost on steel. โYou married?โ
The man stammered, โYโYeahโฆโ
โGot kids?โ
โโฆ Yes, sir.โ
Wyattโs face darkened. Even this man had a wife and children. Meanwhile, he couldnโt even keep his own woman by his side.
Wyatt pulled his foot back and stood, setting his glass aside. โGo home and get divorced.โ
โWhat?โ
โJordan,โ Wyatt called as he walked off, โfind his wife someone better.โ
โHuh? Wyatt, wait!โ
The man crawled forward, watching Wyatt disappear from the room. โJordan, what just happened?!โ
Jordan stared down at him and said flatly, โStart getting used to being single.โ
Wyatt drove off alone, not waiting for Jordan.
Still no leads on Paul.
His car stopped outside Laurieโs building, and he made his way up.
Inside, Betty was getting ready for bed. The knock startled her upright.
The nanny came from the kitchen, wiping her hands, and checked the screen at the door.
She turned to the others and said calmly, โItโs Mr. Wyatt.โ
Laurie looked to Yunice, clearly waiting for a decision.
Yunice said flatly, โTell him Iโm asleep!โ
Laurie gave a subtle nod to the nanny, who went to relay the message.
Then Laurie looked back at Yunice. โYou did lock the window, right? Otherwise Iโm afraid someone might get the idea to scale the wall.โ
Yunice frowned at her window, got up, and locked it from the inside.
Laurie clicked her tongue. โCold-blooded, arenโt you?โ
Yunice leaned on the windowsill, chin in her hand, thinking. Like a locked windowโs going to stop Wyatt.
What was she going to do with him?
Laurie gave her shoulder a pat and turned to leave, but accidentally knocked Yuniceโs bag off the table.
When she bent to pick it up, a bottle of pills rolled out.
Laurieโs brows furrowed. โYouโre taking this?โ
Yunice hesitated, then replied, โNo, itโs just for emergencies.โ
Her bag was always full of medications, most unlabeled or mixed. Only someone trained in pharmacology would know what they did.
โOh.โ Laurie didnโt press. She slipped the bottle back in and returned the bag.
Outside the door, the nanny cracked it just enough to speak. โSirโฆโ
Wyatt frowned. โWhereโs Laurie?โ
