Chapter 652 A Way Back

The bald man nearly chokedโ€”so Yunice had been hiding in his trunk all the way from the University City restaurant? That meantโ€ฆ sheโ€™d heard everything about Nora.

His face flushed a deep, liver-colored red. Doom was comingโ€”he could feel it. Wyatt was going to curse him for being a brainless idiot again for sure.

Yunice turned to walk away, her voice drifting back through the wind. โ€œNo need to tell Wyatt I was here.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

She opened the car door casually. โ€œOh, right. I forgotโ€”you only take orders from Wyatt. You donโ€™t have to listen to me.โ€

Panicked, the bald man scratched his head and hurried into the driverโ€™s seat to serve as her chauffeur. They always said never work for husband-and-wife teamsโ€”who the hell were you supposed to listen to?

The car jolted and bumped along the road, the silence thick with awkwardness. He was a man of brute strength, not words. A fighter, not a talker.

Out of the corner of his eye, he kept sneaking glances at Yuniceโ€™s face, afraid sheโ€™d misunderstandโ€”that sheโ€™d think Wyatt spared Nora out of affection.

After a long internal struggle, he finally muttered, โ€œMadamโ€ฆ sending Nora away wasnโ€™t about being soft. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ Wyatt said he wants to walk the right path now. Heโ€™s not doing those old things anymoreโ€ฆโ€

Ugh. That came out all wrong.

Yunice raised an eyebrow. โ€œWalk the right path?โ€

Seeing she didnโ€™t lash out, the man straightened up and let his words flow. โ€œBack in the day, folks in Silverburgh said Wyatt was ruthless. But what choice did he have? When someoneโ€™s got a knife to your neck, whatโ€™re you supposed to do? Lie down and die?โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™s different now. The Powell familyโ€™s done. The old manโ€™s hanging on by a thread. Wyattโ€™s status in Silverburgh is untouchable. He doesnโ€™t need to follow the old ways anymore.โ€

โ€œAnd of course, itโ€™s also because of you. Wyatt says bloodshed isnโ€™t good for girls to see too much of. Heโ€™s afraid all the bad karma might come back on you one day, so heโ€™s told his people to start straightening out. To change.โ€

โ€œWyatt also said, if he ever has a daughter, he wants people to say, โ€˜Wow, lucky girl to have such a good dad,โ€™ not throw eggs and curse her for having a scumbag father.โ€

Yunice was stunned for a second, then burst into laughter. She turned her head slightly, voice teasing. โ€œAnd who told him heโ€™s even going to have a daughter?โ€

The bald man couldnโ€™t stand people dissing Wyatt. Without thinking, he blurted, โ€œWyattโ€™s strong as hell! He could pop out ten if he wanted! Of course he couldโ€”โ€

Mid-sentence, he snapped his mouth shut, shooting a nervous glance at Yuniceโ€™s expression. Wyatt might be a baby-making machine, sureโ€”but Yuniceโ€ฆ didnโ€™t exactly look like the type to settle down and have kids.

Maybe Wyatt really wasnโ€™t getting a daughter.

Picturing how Wyatt lit up whenever he talked about having a little girl, the bald man got nervous. โ€œWhat man doesnโ€™t want a daughter? Madam, youโ€™re a doctorโ€”why donโ€™t you take some supplements or something? So when the time comes, youโ€™ll give Wyatt a daughter.โ€

Yunice scoffed. โ€œI donโ€™t take supplements, and Iโ€™m not having kids. Besides, itโ€™s the man who determines the childโ€™s sex, not the woman.โ€

He blinked. โ€œBut youโ€™re the one giving birth. So obviously itโ€™s up to you.โ€

Yunice deadpanned, โ€œAre you the doctor, or am I?โ€

He forced a grin. โ€œOf course, you are, maโ€™am.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a doctor. I can tell just by looking whether a manโ€™s going to have sons or daughters.โ€

โ€œWhat? You can see that?โ€ The bald man gasped. โ€œYouโ€™re not a doctorโ€”youโ€™re a sorcerer!โ€

โ€œOkay then, tell meโ€”how many daughters will I have?โ€

Yunice waved a hand. โ€œYouโ€™ll have three sons. No daughter in your future.โ€

โ€œWHAT?!โ€ he screeched, like someone had told him the world was ending.

Yunice sat back, deeply satisfied with how thoroughly sheโ€™d annoyed himโ€”and didnโ€™t say another word.

Elsewhere, the cargo ship Nora had boarded continued drifting across the open sea. The moment the guards left, she slipped the ropes off her wrists with practiced ease.

Her eyes burned with obsession. Whatโ€™s so great about going abroad? Why should I run? I want to win. I want everything back. I want everyone who humiliated me to pay.

She rose silently. While the guard was still away, she slung the bag Wyatt had given her around her neck and climbed the cargo shelves toward a ventilation hatch.

In one swift motion, she squeezed through the narrow, dark openingโ€”and vanished.

Splash!

A loud thud rang out as she hit the water. But on a vast ocean, that kind of sound didnโ€™t attract much attention. No one noticed she had escaped.

Nora swam furiously, putting as much distance between herself and the ship as she could. The cargo vessel had already gone too far from the dock. At this distance, the ocean could devour herโ€”drag her down, leave her dead from exhaustion or drowned in the deep.

But she had no other choice.

Back in the car, the bald man was still driving, the bumps rocking the vehicle in a steady rhythm. Yunice felt a little drowsy.

She rubbed her eyes and glanced at her phone. No one could tell what page she had opened, but there it was: a high-precision map.

And on it, a single red dot was slowly moving.
