Chapter 652 A Way Back
The bald man nearly chokedโso Yunice had been hiding in his trunk all the way from the University City restaurant? That meantโฆ sheโd heard everything about Nora.
His face flushed a deep, liver-colored red. Doom was comingโhe could feel it. Wyatt was going to curse him for being a brainless idiot again for sure.
Yunice turned to walk away, her voice drifting back through the wind. โNo need to tell Wyatt I was here.โ
โHuh?โ
She opened the car door casually. โOh, right. I forgotโyou only take orders from Wyatt. You donโt have to listen to me.โ
Panicked, the bald man scratched his head and hurried into the driverโs seat to serve as her chauffeur. They always said never work for husband-and-wife teamsโwho the hell were you supposed to listen to?
The car jolted and bumped along the road, the silence thick with awkwardness. He was a man of brute strength, not words. A fighter, not a talker.
Out of the corner of his eye, he kept sneaking glances at Yuniceโs face, afraid sheโd misunderstandโthat sheโd think Wyatt spared Nora out of affection.
After a long internal struggle, he finally muttered, โMadamโฆ sending Nora away wasnโt about being soft. Itโs justโฆ Wyatt said he wants to walk the right path now. Heโs not doing those old things anymoreโฆโ
Ugh. That came out all wrong.
Yunice raised an eyebrow. โWalk the right path?โ
Seeing she didnโt lash out, the man straightened up and let his words flow. โBack in the day, folks in Silverburgh said Wyatt was ruthless. But what choice did he have? When someoneโs got a knife to your neck, whatโre you supposed to do? Lie down and die?โ
โBut itโs different now. The Powell familyโs done. The old manโs hanging on by a thread. Wyattโs status in Silverburgh is untouchable. He doesnโt need to follow the old ways anymore.โ
โAnd of course, itโs also because of you. Wyatt says bloodshed isnโt good for girls to see too much of. Heโs afraid all the bad karma might come back on you one day, so heโs told his people to start straightening out. To change.โ
โWyatt also said, if he ever has a daughter, he wants people to say, โWow, lucky girl to have such a good dad,โ not throw eggs and curse her for having a scumbag father.โ
Yunice was stunned for a second, then burst into laughter. She turned her head slightly, voice teasing. โAnd who told him heโs even going to have a daughter?โ
The bald man couldnโt stand people dissing Wyatt. Without thinking, he blurted, โWyattโs strong as hell! He could pop out ten if he wanted! Of course he couldโโ
Mid-sentence, he snapped his mouth shut, shooting a nervous glance at Yuniceโs expression. Wyatt might be a baby-making machine, sureโbut Yuniceโฆ didnโt exactly look like the type to settle down and have kids.
Maybe Wyatt really wasnโt getting a daughter.
Picturing how Wyatt lit up whenever he talked about having a little girl, the bald man got nervous. โWhat man doesnโt want a daughter? Madam, youโre a doctorโwhy donโt you take some supplements or something? So when the time comes, youโll give Wyatt a daughter.โ
Yunice scoffed. โI donโt take supplements, and Iโm not having kids. Besides, itโs the man who determines the childโs sex, not the woman.โ
He blinked. โBut youโre the one giving birth. So obviously itโs up to you.โ
Yunice deadpanned, โAre you the doctor, or am I?โ
He forced a grin. โOf course, you are, maโam.โ
โIโm a doctor. I can tell just by looking whether a manโs going to have sons or daughters.โ
โWhat? You can see that?โ The bald man gasped. โYouโre not a doctorโyouโre a sorcerer!โ
โOkay then, tell meโhow many daughters will I have?โ
Yunice waved a hand. โYouโll have three sons. No daughter in your future.โ
โWHAT?!โ he screeched, like someone had told him the world was ending.
Yunice sat back, deeply satisfied with how thoroughly sheโd annoyed himโand didnโt say another word.
Elsewhere, the cargo ship Nora had boarded continued drifting across the open sea. The moment the guards left, she slipped the ropes off her wrists with practiced ease.
Her eyes burned with obsession. Whatโs so great about going abroad? Why should I run? I want to win. I want everything back. I want everyone who humiliated me to pay.
She rose silently. While the guard was still away, she slung the bag Wyatt had given her around her neck and climbed the cargo shelves toward a ventilation hatch.
In one swift motion, she squeezed through the narrow, dark openingโand vanished.
Splash!
A loud thud rang out as she hit the water. But on a vast ocean, that kind of sound didnโt attract much attention. No one noticed she had escaped.
Nora swam furiously, putting as much distance between herself and the ship as she could. The cargo vessel had already gone too far from the dock. At this distance, the ocean could devour herโdrag her down, leave her dead from exhaustion or drowned in the deep.
But she had no other choice.
Back in the car, the bald man was still driving, the bumps rocking the vehicle in a steady rhythm. Yunice felt a little drowsy.
She rubbed her eyes and glanced at her phone. No one could tell what page she had opened, but there it was: a high-precision map.
And on it, a single red dot was slowly moving.
