Chapter 643 The Truth Beneath the Surface

โ€œThink about it,โ€ Laurie said. โ€œEveryone around you swears up and down that Wyatt and Nora dated, but then Wyatt tells you they didnโ€™tโ€“that it was all in her head. What would you believe?โ€

โ€œWould you trust him? Or would you go with what everyone else claims to have seen and heard? If you side with them, doesnโ€™t that make Wyatt look like a smooth-talking player, toying with womenโ€™s feelings?โ€

โ€œSo rather than be the subject of endless doubt, maybe itโ€™s easier for him to just own it. Weโ€™re all adultsโ€“itโ€™s not a crime to have had a relationship thatโ€™s already over, right?โ€

Yunice shook her head. โ€œEven if you put it like thatโ€ฆ it still feels off.โ€

Laurie arched an eyebrow. โ€œSomeone getting in your ear? Trying to stir up drama? Come on, think it throughโ€“anyone who makes you feel bad with their words isnโ€™t doing it for your sake. They want you uncomfortable. Thatโ€™s what makes them feel good.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re jealous of you, Yunice. Theyโ€™d love nothing more than to drive a wedge between you and Wyatt.โ€

Her tone suddenly shiftedโ€“mischievous now.

Before Yunice could stop her, Laurie had already pulled out her phone and made a call. When Yunice looked over, it was too lateโ€“the line had connected.

Wyattโ€™s voice came through the speaker: โ€œWhat is it?โ€

Laurie held up a finger, signaling Yunice to stay quiet. โ€œGuess where I am?โ€

Wyattโ€™s tone instantly darkened. โ€œWhat happened to Yunice?โ€

Laurie grinned. โ€œI never even said her name. Why so anxious?โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s not about her, why are you calling me?โ€ Wyatt snapped.

Laurie smirked. โ€œAlright, fineโ€“you guessed it. Itโ€™s about Yunice.โ€

โ€œShe just got seriously messed with.โ€

Yunice tried to protest, clearly embarrassed by Laurieโ€™s exaggeration, but Laurie quickly clamped a hand over her mouth to keep her quiet.

Then she spoke cheerfully into the phone. โ€œSomeone stole her phone, locked her in the supply room, and framed her forโ€ฆ you know. If I hadnโ€™t shown up in time, sheโ€™d be facing school discipline right now. I mean, who even thinks up this kind of crap? Sheโ€™s so upset she couldnโ€™t even eat.โ€

Wyattโ€™s voice grew faint, as though he was already confirming details with someone nearby.

Then he asked, โ€œWas it Wendy and a student named Brynn?โ€

Laurie replied, โ€œWho knows. Yunice barely knows either of them. No idea if they acted on their own or if someone else put them up to it.โ€

Wyatt knew Laurie wellโ€“her passive-aggressive tone meant there was more to this than she was letting on.

After ending the call, Laurie turned to Yunice, eyes gleaming. โ€œDonโ€™t listen to what he says. Watch what he does.โ€

โ€œWhen it comes to snakes like Nora, the only way to deal with them is to drag everything into the light. Blast her with a spotlightโ€“letโ€™s see how long she lasts then.โ€

โ€œYou think too much, Yunice. You worry about everything. Thatโ€™s exactly the kind of personality Nora preys on. She twists and manipulatesโ€“and youโ€™re the perfect target.โ€

She set her phone down and grinned with satisfaction. โ€œYou need me to teach that little bitch some lessons.โ€

Then she glanced sideways at Yunice, her voice tinged with nostalgia. โ€œYou knowโ€ฆ when I first met you, I wanted you out of the company.โ€

Yunice tilted her head. โ€œBecause I look like Nora?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€ Laurie didnโ€™t hesitate. โ€œAnyone who threatened my daughter is my enemy for life. First time I saw your face, I had a gut-level reactionโ€“revulsion. I wanted you gone.โ€

โ€œBut then I got confused. Everyone said Wyatt only liked you because you looked like Nora.โ€

โ€œBut then I thoughtโ€“if you look like her, then she also looks like you.โ€

โ€œSo I dug into the timeline. And I realizedโ€ฆ you probably met Wyatt first.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been around the Powell family since you were a kid. Thereโ€™s no way you and Wyatt didnโ€™t cross paths. Ever thought about the possibility that Nora was the substitute? That Wyatt only cared for her because she reminded him of you?โ€

It hit like a thunderclap. Yuniceโ€™s eyes widened, shaken.

But after a moment, the shock faded, and she shook her head. โ€œI donโ€™t think thatโ€™s it.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t see much of Wyatt at the Powell house. Just a few brief encounters when we were kids. Once I got engaged to Paul, Wyatt and I barely even crossed paths. They were always at odds, and Wyatt hardly ever stayed around long.โ€

What she said was true.

Even when she visited the Powells, all she ever caught was a glimpse of Wyattโ€™s back as he left. Theyโ€™d barely exchanged words.

So to her, the idea seemed too far-fetched.

But Laurie wasnโ€™t convinced. Emotions could be buried deep. Could Yunice be so sure Wyatt had never harbored anything for her?

Laurie watched her quietly, then reached over and took her hand.

โ€œDid something happen?โ€ she asked softly. โ€œOr is there somethingโ€“some reasonโ€“youโ€™re so certain Wyatt never had feelings for you?โ€
