Chapter 642 The Ghost Behind the Curtain

Laurie glanced at the video thumbnail and paused. Then she looked again โ€“ this time frowning. โ€œWhy is it her?โ€

She turned to Yunice. โ€œWho sent you this email?โ€

โ€œWhy would Nora send this to you?โ€

Yunice didnโ€™t respond right away. Instead, she clicked on the three-second video.

The first second: Noraโ€™s face, up close to the camera.

The second: shock flashing across her face as she recoiled.

The third: her face completely consumed by a dark blur.

The video ended.

Laurie was thoroughly confused.

But Yunice said quietly, โ€œThe one who stole my phoneโ€ฆ was Nora.โ€

Laurie stared at the screen, at Noraโ€™s guilty, panicked expression frozen in that thumbnail.

โ€œSame old Nora,โ€ she muttered. โ€œStill just as damn annoying.โ€

Yunice glanced at her in surprise. Sheโ€™d heard the stories from Maine, Morgan, Wyatt โ€“ even Nora herself โ€“ but never Laurie.

Laurie grabbed her bag of freeze-dried jackfruit again and munched as she spoke. โ€œNoraโ€™s a chronic liar.โ€

โ€œWhen I first met her, she was already lying.โ€

โ€œWanna guess how? She kept subtly implying that she and Wyatt were sleeping together.โ€

Yunice blinked. โ€œThey werenโ€™t?โ€

Laurie scoffed. โ€œHell no.โ€

โ€œShe manipulated everyone around her, banking on the fact that no one dared stir things up by going to Wyatt himself.โ€

Then Laurie smirked. โ€œYou know why Nora got fired from Wellinges Pharma?โ€

โ€œFired?โ€ Yunice echoed, stunned.

Laurie chuckled. โ€œOf course fired. Why else would she leave everything behind, needing Jordan to pack her things and send them back to the Johnson family?โ€

โ€œIt was me. I went straight to Wyatt and exposed the lie sheโ€™d been spreading โ€“ that she was his girlfriend.โ€

Yunice blinked in confusion. โ€œWait, wait, Laurie, now Iโ€™m lost. Wyatt admitted he and Nora used to be together.โ€

So how did this turn into a lie Nora made up?

Laurie laughed. โ€œThatโ€™s where sheโ€™s smart. No normal person would be bold enough to fabricate something like that. But she did it right under Wyattโ€™s nose, taking advantage of his distance from lower-level staff.โ€

โ€œShe built up a reputation through fear and charm. Her polished image made people echo her words. It made her look competent โ€“ so she got promoted all the way to executive secretary, stationed right next to Wyatt.โ€

โ€œBut too bad for her, she tried her game on me.โ€

Laurie was still visibly smug about it. โ€œThis was three, maybe four years ago. Wellinges Pharma was taking heat for a supply chain scandal. As executive secretary, Nora needed someone to take the fall. Whoโ€™d she pick? My lab.โ€

โ€œLike hell I was gonna let that happen.โ€

โ€œI told her to take her lies somewhere else. You know what she did next? She called me into her office and threatened me โ€“ said if I didnโ€™t play along, sheโ€™d make things hard for my daughter.โ€

Yunice froze. She hadnโ€™t known Laurie had a daughter.

Laurie skipped right over that detail. โ€œSo I asked her โ€“ โ€˜Does Wyatt know youโ€™re threatening peopleโ€™s families?โ€™ And she had the nerve to tell me Wyatt hinted I should comply.โ€

Laurie shook her head, laughing. โ€œShe really thought Iโ€™d buy that crap. She thought Iโ€™d be too scared to confront Wyatt. But I kicked open the door to her office, stormed out in front of the whole secretary department, and yelled for Wyatt to come out and face me.โ€

โ€œYou shouldโ€™ve seen her face โ€“ pale as a ghost!โ€

โ€œI made a scene. I asked Wyatt directly if he had told her to frame me. If yes, Iโ€™d wreck his office. If no, Iโ€™d wreck her.โ€

Yunice could practically picture the scene as Laurie told it.

Laurie continued, โ€œOur labโ€™s PhDs tried to pull me back, saying to go easy on her since she was โ€˜Mr. Wyattโ€™s girlfriend.โ€™ Gotta save her some face, right? And thatโ€™s when Wyatt realized Nora had been publicly implying they were together. So he fired her. Same day. She came back later, crying that weโ€™d wronged her, that sheโ€™d never said such things, demanding we show proof. Wyatt didnโ€™t even listen. And soon after, that steel plant accident happened โ€“ Nora was in it. She ended up in a coma for two or three years. And now sheโ€™s back, skulking around you like a ghost,โ€ Laurie said, tapping her temple. โ€œSheโ€™s not right in the head. But Iโ€™ll give it to her โ€“ Nora knows how to mess with people. Sheโ€™s got that sweet, innocent, harmless look that makes it hard to hate her. Sheโ€™s fooled a lot of people. Even now, some still believe she and Wyatt had a thing, that sheโ€™s his untouchable taboo.โ€

Laurie narrowed her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m guessing Wyatt told you they dated just to avoid further confusion.โ€
