Chapter 623 You Donโt Qualify
Tommy still didnโt know what Yuniceโs husband actually did.
But when Yunice used that check, sheโd already covered up the payer info with a marker.
That was a habit people in finance developed โ blank checks should never be exposed. Otherwise, they risked being filled out maliciously.
The company name wasnโt blacked out though: Wellinges Pharma.
Not that it told Tommy anything new. He already knew Yunice and her husband were both from Wellinges Pharma; he just didnโt know which department her husband worked in.
When he looked back again, Wyatt had already tucked the checkbook away.
So Tommy turned his focus to the math solution. He mouthed the steps silently, working through them in his head before nodding. โThe steps are correct, but theyโre not suitable for most students. If you plan to share this with others, you should break it down into a simpler version.โ
The girl didnโt look pleased at all โ almost like Yunice solving the problem correctly was a personal insult.
She looked at Yunice. โDid you deliberately try to show off in front of him? Why didnโt you write the simpler steps? Or maybe you couldnโt?โ
No matter what, she had to find fault with Yunice.
Yunice smiled. โThe simpler version takes up a full page. You didnโt want me writing in your book, so I had to condense it.โ
The girl said, โDidnโt you bring a whole checkbook? Couldnโt you have just used that?โ
Yunice replied coolly, โYou said it yourself โ itโs a checkbook, not scratch paper. And seriously, who begs someone for help and acts so entitled? Iโm not charging you, and you think you can just use up my checks? Hmm?โ
That final โhmmโ rose with a mocking edge, calm and dismissive.
The girlโs face stiffened. She quickly said, โThatโs not what I meant. Why are you putting it that way? Are you trying to embarrass me in front of Tommy?โ
The way she emphasized โboyfriendโ was far too deliberate โ clearly meant to provoke.
Yunice smiled sweetly. โYou say that like Iโm being petty. Is that what youโre trying to imply?โ
โOr are you saying Iโm bullying you? Thatโs weird. You came to me, asking for help. I helped you. Now you say I was showing off? So what do you actually want?โ
She blinked those wide, sincere eyes right at the girl.
The girl was completely flustered. โThatโs not what I meant!โ
โThen what did you mean?โ
She ended up stranded, caught in Yuniceโs rhetorical trap, struggling to come up with an excuse.
Yunice sipped her drink, thoroughly enjoying the scene.
Sheโd said it before โ other kidsโ thoughts were all about their faces.
โEnough,โ Tommy said sternly. โYunice was genuinely trying to help. You were the one making assumptions. Apologize.โ
The girl pouted, clearly unwilling, but mumbled, โSorry.โ
Tommy continued, โIf youโre truly sorry, then be respectful and ask her properly how to solve the problem.โ
The girlโs eyes flashed with resentment, but she still turned to Yunice for help.
Yunice asked, โNow can I write in your book?โ
Then she began writing the full breakdown of the steps.
As she wrote, the girl watched intently. Suddenly, she lit up. โWait โ you wrote this part wrong!โ
She looked like sheโd just struck gold, and immediately reached for Wyatt. โLook, your girlfriend made a mistake here. Isnโt that wrong?โ
Wyatt jerked his arm away with a look of disgust.
She pushed on. โNo, really, she got it wrong!โ
Wyatt looked at her coldly. โSo what?โ
The girl froze. She thought if Yunice made a mistake, her boyfriend would be embarrassed.
Tommy stepped over and took a look. โShe didnโt get it wrong.โ
Then he turned to Wyatt. โSee? She did it right.โ
Wyatt frowned, clearly impatient.
All those complex symbols โ he couldnโt make heads or tails of them. He had no way to tell whether Yuniceโs answer was right or wrong, no way to follow her logic.
But Tommy? One glance and he got it. He even understood Yuniceโs thought process.
Wyatt stayed silent. Tommy assumed he didnโt want to get involved, so he didnโt press it. Instead, he started patiently explaining the step to the girl.
From the corner of his eye, Wyatt looked over at Yunice, his expression darkening.
No wonder he and Yunice always ran out of things to talk about โ they werenโt even operating on the same level. The things she was passionate about were totally beyond him.
He used to ask her to teach him stuff, thinking itโd help them bond.
But seeing Tommy like this made him realize what kind of impact admiration could have.
Everyone loved the strong. Didnโt they?
