Chapter 576 The Gambit

Wyatt let out a quiet sigh. โ€œYou think too much. You overanalyze. From now on, if anyone says something that upsets you, you tell me firstโ€“give me a chance to explain. Iโ€™ll handle the rest. Understand?โ€

Yunice looked up at him. โ€œSure.โ€

Letโ€™s see if you actually mean that.

She didnโ€™t expect that moment would be tested so soon.

Not long after they returned to Pavilion Hall, Yunice received a call from Quinton.

He told her that a contact inside the prison had just passed on a message: Oscar had been taken for a formal interrogation.

That very night, the media released more details about Morganโ€™s alleged involvement in the Elsie case, further cementing his connection to the crime.

Yunice had barely begun to feel hopeful when things took a sharp turn.

Just as the police publicly confirmed Morgan as a key suspect and announced his formal arrestโ€“Maine stepped in with a bombshell.

โ€œI have Morganโ€™s alibi!โ€ she declared.

At a hastily arranged press conference, Maine made her claim. โ€œMorgan and I have been in a secret relationship for the past three years! The night the crime occurred, he was at my private villa. We spent the night together. He couldnโ€™t have been at the scene.โ€

She even produced surveillance footage. โ€œThese are the security recordings from my property and from the public road cameras nearby. They prove what Iโ€™m saying is true.โ€

The footage showed Maineโ€™s car arriving at her villa around 4 PM on the day of the incident.

It wasnโ€™t until the next afternoon that another vehicle was seen leaving the property.

Villa surveillance also captured Morgan and Maine, arms around each other, entering the house together. Later, another camera caught two figures โ€“ clearly resembling Morgan and Maine โ€“ embracing in front of a large glass window.

All of it supported Maineโ€™s claim that Morgan had been with her that night.

With tears in her eyes, Maine cried, โ€œIโ€™m six years older than Morgan. His family has always disapproved of our relationship. He chose to protect me by staying silent โ€“ heโ€™d rather confess than let me be dragged into it. But as his girlfriend, I wonโ€™t let him take the fall for someone elseโ€™s crime!โ€

She looked into the cameras, pleading. โ€œPlease believe me! No woman would risk her own reputation to lie! Morgan is innocent!โ€

Yunice slammed her phone face-down on the table.

Fake. All of it was fake!

Maine was lying!

She had bet everything โ€“ her reputation, her name โ€“ on this elaborate gamble.

Yunice was furious. She couldnโ€™t understand why Maine would go to such lengths for a man accused of murder.

She slowed down the video footage, even brought it to professionals for analysis. Every single one of them said the same thing: there were no signs of tampering. The footage was authentic.

Wyatt stepped out of the bathroom and saw Yunice fuming, her delicate face scrunched in anger. He strolled over and leaned casually beside her, grabbing her phone and glancing at the screen.

He knew exactly what was upsetting her โ€“ so he got straight to work.

He sent a message and, without even looking up, said, โ€œThe Elsie case is being handed over to the Z Task Force tomorrow.โ€

Yunice blinked in surprise.

In recent weeks, while gathering evidence to help Oscar, sheโ€™d learned a lot about criminal investigations.

The Z Task Force was the most elite and precise forensic unit in the country.

There might be such a thing as a perfect crime, but fake alibis rarely hold up under that teamโ€™s scrutiny.

If Maine was lying, theyโ€™d expose it.

Still, even with Wyatt going out of his way to help, Yunice couldnโ€™t shake her anxiety. What if the task force confirmed Maineโ€™s story?

She pressed her palm to her forehead, unwilling to stop searching for a flaw herself, when Owenโ€™s call came through.

She answered, and his furious voice exploded through the receiver. โ€œElsieโ€™s been dead fifteen days, and her final moments are still being dragged all over the internet! Iโ€™ve told you again and again to get those videos taken down, but you havenโ€™t done a damn thing!โ€

Already on edge, Yunice snapped, โ€œI donโ€™t own a PR company. How am I supposed to delete anything?โ€

Owen yelled even louder. โ€œMaybe you donโ€™t, but Wyatt does! Youโ€™re Elsieโ€™s sisterโ€“how can helping her be so hard for you? Donโ€™t you feel anything when you see her being slandered like this every night?!โ€

Yunice laughed coldly. โ€œI sleep just fine.โ€

โ€œOh, you want the posts gone? Iโ€™ve got a better idea! Powellโ€™s family owns a PR company too. Didnโ€™t Paul love Elsie so deeply? Get him to help! Oh, wait โ€“ you probably already know he wonโ€™t lift a finger for you.

โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll teach you a trick. Link Paul and Elsieโ€™s names. Create a scandal and blast it to the top of the trending searches. Letโ€™s see if that motivates him to clean up the mess.โ€

Owen exploded. โ€œWhat the hell kind of garbage idea is that?!โ€

Yunice let out a cold chuckle and jabbed one final blade straight into his heart.

โ€œOh, and by the way โ€“ congrats on your wedding.โ€
