Chapter 557 The Man Who Saved Her
To be honest, Elianna was pretty disappointed in Wyatt. Ever since she realized he was stringing along two women, his image in her heart had come crashing down from the heavens.
She paced her room restlessly, then took out her fatherโs portrait and carefully wiped it clean again.
Though he had passed away three years ago, that frame was spotless. It was her spiritual anchor.
As she rambled softly to her fatherโs photo, a knock came at the door.
Thinking it was a maid delivering lunch, Elianna didnโt even look up. โCome in.โ
The doorknob turned, and Yunice stepped inside.
Seeing Eliannaโs back to her, Yunice stopped at a distance and said, โElianna.โ
Elianna flinched and spun around. โWhy is it you?!โ
Startled, she shot to her feet, and the portrait in her hands slipped and fell to the floor.
Yunice quickly moved to pick it up. But when her eyes landed on the photo, she froze.
Elianna snapped back to her senses and snatched the portrait away, holding it behind her. โWhat are you trying to do with my dadโs picture?!โ
Yunice gave a quiet laugh. โWhat could I possibly do to a photo?โ
She looked at it again. โThatโs your dad?โ
There was something strange in Yuniceโs eyesโsomething Elianna couldnโt quite read. Frowning, she didnโt answer but looked deeply guarded.
Yuniceโs voice warmed, a faint joy in her tone. โDid you know? Your father saved my life four years ago. I still remember him. He left his coat in my carโIโve kept it at the dry cleaner this whole time, and Iโve always meant to return it to him with his phoneโฆโ
Her words faltered.
This was a memorial portrait.
Eliannaโs father was already gone. He had died in the steel mill accident, sacrificing himself to prevent a catastrophe and save hundreds of workers.
The man Yunice had long wanted to thank hadโฆ quietly passed away.
Her throat tightened. When she looked at Elianna again, her gaze was full of reverenceโlike she was seeing a treasured relic of someone irreplaceable.
Elianna was creeped out. She shouted, โWhatโs with that look?! And when the hell did my dad save you? Stop trying to manipulate meโIโm not falling for any of it! I donโt care about you and Wyatt. Just leave me out of it!โ
Trying to prove herself, Yunice continued, โBack then, your dad was driving a red Hongqi H9. The license plate was all matching numbersโฆโ
Elianna sneered. โThatโs Wyattโs car. Anyone in Beijing knows that.โ
โMy dad was Wyattโs driver. Of course youโd know the plate number.โ
Yunice said firmly, โHe was driving that car when he saved me on Xiangjiang Road.โ
Elianna rolled her eyes. โEven more impossible.โ
Yunice frowned. โWhy are you so sure?โ
โBecause youโre lying,โ Elianna said sharply. โThat car was Wyattโs personal vehicle. Itโs not registered under the company, and no one can track it. He only uses it for private trips. Normally, he drives it himself. My dad wasnโt even allowed to ride in it.โ
She paused and narrowed her eyes. โThere were a few rare exceptions when he let my dad driveโbut Wyatt was always there.โ
She stared Yunice down. โSo if my dad was driving when he saved you, then you mustโve seen Wyatt. Did you?โ
Then she added coldly, โI donโt believe for a second that if youโd seen him, you wouldnโt remember.โ
And she was right.
Yunice hadnโt seen anyone else that night.
All she remembered was Eliannaโs father stepping out like a beam of light. That moment was burned into her memory.
Still, she pressed. โThere wasnโt even one exception?โ
She couldnโt believe that Eliannaโs father had never driven that car alone.
If Wyatt had been there, why didnโt he remember it when I brought it up?
Elianna said, โDonโt believe me? Letโs check.โ
Yunice blinked. โCheckโฆ how?โ
Elianna pulled a phone out from a drawer. โIโm a coward. My dad used to send me a message every time he left the house.โ
โWhen exactly did this happen?โ
Yunice replied, โFebruary 3rd, 20XX. Around 11:30 PM.โ
Elianna typed quickly, searching her chat history. Her eyes lingered on the screen.
Yunice leaned in. On the screen were the following messages:
โSweetheart, go to bed early. I will be home really late tonight.โ
Elianna: โHow late?โ
Dad: โAround 1 or 2 in the morning.โ
Elianna: โThatโs not late at all. Iโll wait up. I want a midnight snack!โ
Dad: โBe good. Donโt stay up.โ
Yuniceโs eyes drifted to the timestampโjust after midnight.
Her chest tightened. The timing matched exactly.
