Chapter 556 What Counts as Owed
At the hospital, Yunice held both wooden boxes in her arms while Wyatt stood beside her, hands stuffed in his pockets, face still cold.
Yunice waited for him to speak.
Wyatt waited for her to speak first.
A full few minutes passed โ until Wyatt, impatient as always, broke the silence first, grumbling, โYou wanted rhino horn. Why didnโt you just ask me? Why go to Victor?โ
Yunice replied quietly, โI did ask youโฆโ
Heโd said he didnโt have any, hadnโt he?
Wyatt snapped, โYeah, you asked. Did I ever say I wouldnโt get it for you?โ
Yunice frowned. โWhen someoneโs sick, every second counts. I didnโt have time to sit around waiting for some surprise.โ
Sure, he hadnโt said no, but he hadnโt said yes either. So how was she supposed to sit there and wait on a promise that never existed?
Wyatt paused, momentum lost.
โI didnโt think Iโd be able to get one,โ he muttered. โSo I didnโt promise. But that doesnโt mean I wasnโt trying.โ
Yunice blinked in confusion. That rhino horn โ hadnโt he gotten it at the charity auction?
He wasnโt lacking money. For him, it shouldโve been as easy as raising a hand.
And heโd had it for a while.
Victor, on the other hand, mustโve gone through far more effort.
She glanced up, catching a flicker of Wyattโs expression.
They had both gone out of their way to bring her the same rare gift.
If she kept sulking, it would seem ungrateful.
So Yunice softened her tone, offering a way to ease the tension. โCould you carry one of the boxes for me? My wrist really hurtsโฆ I think I sprained it in the crash.โ
At her words, a flicker of guilt flashed across Wyattโs eyes. He took both boxes from her arms, tucked them under one arm, and gently cradled her wrist with his other hand, rubbing it softly. โDoes it still hurt? Maybe you should have it checked again.โ
Yunice shook her head slightly. โIt doesnโt hurtโฆ not if you stop scolding me.โ
Wyatt froze. He looked up at her slowly โ clearly caught off guard by the line. They locked eyes for a few seconds, and he seemedโฆ awkward. Even his stance grew stiff.
Hearing her speak so gently made him feel like a complete jerk.
He looked away and said stiffly, โI wasnโt scolding you. What I mean is, if anything comes up, Iโll handle it for you. But when you ask Victor for help, no matter what it is, if he helps you, youโll owe him a favor, right?โ
โYouโre such a simple person. If you owe someone, youโll definitely pay it back. And how could I be okay with that?โ
Yunice murmured, โButโฆ if I ask you for helpโฆ donโt I owe you a favor too?โ
Wyatt lifted his brows, chest puffing up slightly. โHow can I be the same as anyone else? Iโm your husband. Between us, thereโs no such thing as favors.โ
Yunice looked up, uncertain. โSo I donโt have to repay you?โ
He looked left and right, rubbed the back of his neck, then muttered, โMm.โ
She couldnโt help but smile โ and with that, the fight melted away. They turned and walked back together.
Midway, Yunice asked, โCan I see Nora again?โ
She glanced at the two boxes in his arms. Now that she had two horns, one would be enough to cure Yuanbao.
Nora had the same symptoms. Rhino horn would work on her, too.
Yunice and Wyatt werenโt going to last. If she could wake Nora up, maybe it would be her parting gift to him.
Wyatt was silent for a good ten seconds before responding. โIsnโt your brotherโs case more urgent?โ
Talk about striking a nerve. The mention of Oscar instantly reminded Yunice of Morgan.
She had no idea how deep Wyattโs hand ran in that whole case. But she wasnโt planning on confronting him outright โ not when sheโd lose without a doubt.
Her only option was to save Oscar before Wyatt even realized what she was doing.
She smiled and said, โMy brotherโs case canโt be rushed. Visiting Nora wonโt take long.โ
Wyatt frowned. โWhy do you keep thinking about her?โ
Yunice gave him a look โ Shouldnโt you be the one thinking about her?
Why else keep her alive? Guard her house?
But she said nothing else. Some truths only make things harder when spoken aloud.
Back at the west wing, Elianna immediately retreated to her room.
Neither of those two lunatics were people she could afford to offend. Or outplay. Might as well play dumb and keep her head down.
Wyatt remained busy as always. The next morning, he stood behind Yuniceโs vanity, carefully applying ointment to the bruises on her neck before heading out.
Elianna leaned out the window, snacking on sunflower seeds as she watched his car disappear.
โIs he really off to work, or sneaking off to see Nora again?โ she muttered. โUgh. Men. Only my dadโs ever made me feel secure.โ
