Chapter 456 The Echo of Hypocrisy

Back then, Owen had been so convinced Yunice was lying that he hadnโ€™t even looked at the medical recordsโ€“he just tore them up on the spot.

Now, Yunice was throwing the exact same words back in his face.

Elsie, fuming, jumped up and stormed over to confront Yunice. โ€œWho do you think you are, saying that about Owen?! Did you see him touch Peggy? Just spouting slander like itโ€™s nothingโ€“do you even care about the law?โ€

Yunice glanced at her with disdain. โ€œEverything happens for a reason. If Peggy was making stuff up, why pick him? It takes two to tango. Maybe take a minute to reflect on what he did wrong.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t see it either, but your word is gospel? Peggyโ€™s got physical evidence, and when the test results come back, your dearest Owenโ€™s reputation will be dragged through the mud. And here you are, stopping me from convincing him to settle privatelyโ€“do you want him to be convicted?

โ€œDonโ€™t forget, your momโ€™s already being held by the police and facing a year in jail. If your brother gets thrown in for rape, do the math. Whoโ€™s going to look worse?โ€

With each sentence, the color drained further from Owen and Elsieโ€™s faces.

Especially Elsie. She hadnโ€™t seen anything firsthandโ€“how could she be sure Owen didnโ€™t sleep with Peggy?

Peggyโ€™s accusations sounded convincing. There were bloodstains on the sheetsโ€“clear signs of the real deal.

Yunice wasnโ€™t wrong. If the test came back positive, Owen would be done for.

Then what? Their mom and Owen both behind bars, and sheโ€™d be left completely alone?

No way.

Elsie quickly changed sides. She threw herself at the holding cell, sobbing and clutching Owenโ€™s hands through the bars. โ€œOwen, maybe just compromise for now. The situationโ€™s bad, but you can fix it later. Youโ€™ve only got a chance to fight back if youโ€™re out in the world.โ€

Owenโ€™s eyes shot open. He yanked his hands away.

โ€œYou want me to give in?! You want me to marry that witch?!โ€ he howled. โ€œI didnโ€™t even do anything! I can fight this in court! Elsie, do you not believe me either?!โ€

โ€œWha-?โ€ Elsie was caught off guard. She couldnโ€™t outright say she didnโ€™t believe him, so she hedged. โ€œOwen, you said yourself you blacked out. You donโ€™t remember what happenedโ€ฆโ€

Owen exploded. โ€œI said I didnโ€™t do it! Why are you assuming I did?!โ€

Elsie backed off, hands raised, totally overwhelmed.

Realizing he couldnโ€™t count on her, Owen turned back to Yunice. โ€œThe Zhou family has tons of lawyers. Donโ€™t tell me thereโ€™s no way they can win this.โ€

He snapped, โ€œYou just donโ€™t want to help me, do you?โ€

Yunice said flatly, โ€œNo. I donโ€™t.โ€

Owen stared at her, dumbfounded. He hadnโ€™t expected her to admit it so bluntly.

Yunice lifted her chin slightly, smiling coldly. โ€œWhat goes around comes around. When I was being slandered, did you help me? Why should I help you now?โ€

Then she twisted the knife. โ€œAnd for the record, I really didnโ€™t do anything back then. Can you say the same for yourself?โ€

Owen had been blackout drunk. He couldnโ€™t say with certainty what had happened with Peggy.

Desperate, he lashed out. โ€œI got drunk because of you and Paul! Thatโ€™s the only reason Peggy had the chance to trap me! This is your faultโ€“you have to fix it!โ€

Yunice raised an eyebrow. โ€œBecause of me?โ€

Owen said with total confidence, โ€œI only recently found out Paul lied about you. I felt horrible, like Iโ€™d failed you. That guiltโ€™s what pushed me to drink. I was a wreck! What else couldโ€™ve triggered me like that?โ€

Yunice burst out laughing. โ€œSo your grand gesture of regret was getting drunk? Not apologizing, not clearing my name, not doing anything that would actually helpโ€“just wallowing in self-pity. Who were you performing for?โ€

Still laughing, she added, โ€œYou all should quit medicine and go join the theater. Youโ€™d have a packed house every night.โ€

Owen froze, his face flushed in a swirl of colors, humiliated.

Yunice didnโ€™t say another word. She just stood there, waiting for Owen to make his decision.

After all, she wasnโ€™t the one under pressure here.

Elsie had been hoping Yunice would take on the awkward role of persuading Owen to give inโ€“no one wanted to be the one heโ€™d resent later.

But Yunice stayed stubbornly silent, leaving Elsie anxiously glancing around, unsure of what to do next.
