Chapter 455 A Taste of His Own Medicine
Peggyโs whole stunt had one goal โ to climb the social ladder, find a good father for her child, and lock in a bright future.
With Owen right in her sights, she wasnโt letting go.
Seeing Yunice return, her expression calm and unreadable, Owen assumed she brought good news.
He reached a hand through the bars, trying to grab hers. โYunice, how did it go? Is she willing to settle?โ
As he spoke, he coached her, โPeggyโs unbelievably shameless and unreasonable. Donโt believe a word she says. Just use your influence to shut her down. If she has nowhere to take her claims, sheโll back off. And she said she has a video. We need to destroy it. Thatโs the only way to stop her.โ
He was convinced Wyatt had the power to crush anything, and as long as Yunice stepped in, someone like Peggy wouldnโt be able to stir up a thing.
Yunice waited until he finished, then said, โPeggy agreed to a private settlement. Her conditions sound reasonable.โ
Owen frowned. โWhy settle at all? I asked you here to solve the problem!โ
Didnโt she get it? He couldโve settled on his own. He escalated this because he didnโt want to settle.
If she wasnโt going to help, then why even come?
Yunice chuckled. โIโm not a magician. What do you expect me to do โ wave a wand and make it all disappear?โ
โYouโre the one who messed up. You expect me, your sister, to clean it up for you? Iโm humiliated just standing here.โ
Owenโs eyes widened in disbelief.
Yunice kept going. โWhat kind of decent man gets drunk and ends up in a hotel with a woman? You acted like a dog in heat and got caught. You think youโre a victim? Please. Youโre a grown man โ donโt tell me you couldnโt push her away. If you didnโt want it, whyโd you let it go that far? Honestly, it looks like you were playing hard to get.โ
Owen stood there, stunned. It took him a few seconds to stammer, โYuniceโฆ are you possessed or something?โ
What the hell was she saying?
Yuniceโs tone turned even sharper. โWhatโs done is done. Your name is mud. Whoโs gonna marry you now? You want to blow this up in court and drag our whole family through the dirt? We canโt afford to look like fools just because you already do.โ
Owenโs mouth fell open. Why did all of this sound so familiar?
The memory was fuzzy, but something tugged at the back of his mind.
He didnโt care about that right now. He just wanted to be cleared.
Ignoring her jabs, he pleaded, โYunice, you have to believe me. I swear sheโs lying. I might not have even touched her. Tell her to prove it!โ
โI swear I didnโt do anything!โ
Yunice snapped, โShe already submitted physical evidence and agreed to an exam. You think thatโs nothing? The burden of proof is on whoever makes the claim. If you say you didnโt do it, whereโs your evidence?โ
โIโฆโ Owen stammered, โI didnโt do anything, so what evidence could I possibly have?โ
Yunice let out a cold laugh. โExactly. What evidence could you possibly have?โ
Owen started to nod, but then he caught her expression โ and it hit him. She was mocking him.
Yunice said, โFace it. Itโs gone this far. Even if you had proof, whoโd believe you now? Youโre not a kid anymore. Start taking responsibility for your own mess. Stop dragging your family down with you. Peggyโs not even that bad. She clearly likes you. So what if you slept with her? She said sheโd take responsibility. Youโre not losing anything.โ
Owen stared at her, frozen. There was something cruel in her smile that made him feel genuinely afraid.
He took a step back.
Then it all came rushing back โ he remembered everything.
He finally realized why those words sounded so familiar.
They were his own.
Those were the exact words he once hurled at Yunice.
Back when the scandal with Paul exploded, when everyone in Silverburch mocked the Saunders familyโs reckless daughter.
He had been furious, ashamed. And to vent, he lashed out at Yunice with the ugliest accusations โ blaming her for being indecent, for seducing Paul, for not fighting back, blaming her for dragging the family name through the mud.
Yunice had desperately tried to explain. She said the rumors werenโt true. She said nothing had happened between her and Paul. She said she had proof.
Her proof had been a stack of medical reports.
