Chapter 425 A Family That Shouldโve Broken Sooner
After Lily finished speaking, she waited nervously for Yuniceโs response.
Yunice was silent for a few seconds, then gave a soft โmmโโand said nothing more.
Seeing that she didnโt object, Owen lit up. โI knew it! Weโre all familyโof course Yunice wouldnโt hold a grudge!โ
โYunice, since youโve forgiven Mom, letโs put this all behind us. Todayโs a good day. Why donโt you bring Wyatt home for dinner? Weโll officially welcome him into the Saunders family as our in-law!โ
Then he quickly added, โOh, right! I was so happy I almost forgotโmake sure you go withdraw the lawsuit.โ
Yunice toyed with her fingertips and said coolly, โWho said I was going to withdraw it?โ
Owen froze. โDidnโt you just accept Momโs apology?โ
Yunice gave a dry laugh. โI accepted her apology. But the law doesnโt. The exam proctors donโt. The SAT officials donโt.โ
Owen blinked, confused. โWhat do you mean?โ
โThe summonsโyou read it, right? The ones pressing charges arenโt me. Itโs the exam proctors and the SAT administration. Do you think her slander only affected me? She jeopardized the integrity of the SAT. She stirred public opinion. This isnโt just between her and me.โ
Owenโs face turned pale.
Lily looked frightened. โI just said a few things. Is it really that serious?โ
Owen cut her off, turning to Yunice. โThen what if you write a letter of clemency?โ
Oscar hesitated. โYunice, is there any way to resolve this peacefully?โ
Though Oscar sympathized with Yunice, he also knew this incident going public again wouldnโt look good for anyone.
After all, a daughter retaliating against her mother never plays well.
Yunice replied, โI can write the letter. But only if she makes a public apology to correct the damage.โ
โA public apology?โ Lilyโs voice shot up an octave. To her, that was social suicide.
If she did that, the other socialites would never let her live it down.
Owen hesitated and asked cautiously, โSo if Mom makes a public apology, she wonโt have to face legal consequences?โ
Lily instantly realized he was wavering.
She burst into tears and yelled, โIโll never do it! That would humiliate me more than death!โ
Yunice snapped, โDid you think about what public opinion would do to me when you spread your lies?โ
Lily froze in shock at her outburst.
Owen forced himself to smile and said, โYunice, just for Oscarโs sake, please let this go. Ask Wyatt to pull some strings and make it disappear.โ
Owen actually thought this would be easy.
But Yunice let out a cold laugh and turned to Oscar, whoโd been trying to play peacemaker. โOscar, there are a few things you probably donโt know.โ
โDo you know why, even though Elsie was infected, she got transferred to Wellinges Pharma for treatment, while I, completely uninfected, was locked in a high-risk ward?โ
Oscarโs face changed. Was there something more to it?
Owen immediately realized what she was about to say. His expression tightened as he called her name, trying to stop her.
But Yunice was clear and steady. โItโs because Wyatt donated ten billion to secure one spot. And Owen forced my spot to go to Elsie. He was willing to trade my life for hers.โ
โThatโs not how it was!โ Owen jumped to explain. โIt was a carefully calculated decision! If you had left, Wyatt wouldnโt have cared if Elise and I died. But if you stayed, heโd have to protect all three of us. And it workedโwe all survived, didnโt we-โ
Before he could finish, he was sent flying.
Oscar had punched him square in the face. โYou used Yuniceโs life as a bargaining chip and thought that made you clever?!โ
Owen ignored the pain, scrambling to explain. โElise took a stab for me. Sheโs weak. If I hadnโt saved her, Iโd regret it for life!โ
Oscar shouted, โThen you pay that debt yourself! Yunice isnโt yours to sacrifice! What gives you the right to use her life like itโs yours to spend?!โ
Oscar looked utterly disgusted. โI canโt believe I even tried to defend youโฆ I actually hoped Yunice would forgive youโฆ You people are-โ
โEvery time I try to help you, you somehow manage to stoop even lower. You make me feel like a brainless accomplice!โ
Oscar shut his eyes, breathing hard.
After a long pause, he quietly wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes and said, โIโm done trying. This family shouldโve broken a long time ago. From now on, letโs all go our separate ways.โ
He couldnโt go on.
His mind was in chaosโhe had wanted to save this family, but now he saw clearly that he couldnโt change any of them.
All he could do was accept that it was already too far gone.
